Left out is the feeling of near total bone weariness that comes from too little sleep as a result of what seemed to be an endless series of night car- rier group replenishments fol' lowed by an equally endless series of daylight CONSOLS alongside the fleet oilers and ammunition ships that shuffled back and forth keeping us filled up. The cold numbers don't show the loneliness of Christ-- mas in the Indian Ocean 11,000 miles from home nor the disap- pointment of cancelled liberty ports. The pictures CHIUPOTA ti-av the disheartenmem an dismay that a last minute GX' tension of the dep10Ymem gave us, for that is hidden from the CHI'l'lEg'l3it.' for the officers end men who rode WICHIT dufmg this period, this bookwliihopie fully remind YOU in the yeam. ahead of a period Ollf of YL life which you can beJUSUf1a y proud, the but It was never easy- S I ,inemen did everything thatwa asked of them- e WH. The change of command ceremony will be brief and quite typically take place between underway re- plenishments in the Tonkin Gulf. I am being reassigned to the Staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon. I leave with very mixed emotions . . . Over fourteen months as Command- ing Office of WICHITA has made a deep impression on me. It has been exciting to serve with some outstanding men. It has been a pleasure to meet many of the families and friends. The WICHITA Linemen can cer- tainly hold their heads high with a firmly established repu- tation for excellence. I'm proud to have been a WICHITA Linemanf' 'x -K Ouuzg' ' , Jack M. STEVENS Captain, U.S. Navy Executive Officer To have served on this fine ship has been a pleasure for me. The hard work and long hours of toil by each of the LINEMEN will be long remem- bered. May you all reach new goals and realize your ambi- tions in the future. To all the LINEMEN I wish you the finest always, and hope that this pic- torial remembrance of our cruise will preserve fine mem- ories for each one. lx-ff X SX S W.L. Though the process of completion was d1scourag1ngly slow at times it was fun and well worth the time and effort. A cruise book 1S intended to provlde a remembrance of a partlcular t1me perlod in the l1fe of a ship and its crew In the case of a sh1p such as WICHITA this remembrance w1ll reflect the l1fe of a fully committed, hard-worklng sh1p of the service force. Although extensive developments, num- erous and often discouraging schedule changes, and demands of time and energy have been the lot of this ship over the past, WAISVWDRTII 4 H ks I in 7357 Ili-rwhvl Avvnuv ' f La Jolln, Vulnlmnm 91?0Qlj' Nlarwlum- Nln I x x cruise the crew of WICHITA have proven themselves time and agam. Even wlth our str1ct operating schedule there haS been some time to relax and to V1S1t a few of the exotic p0I'IS of the Far East And there have been the l1ghter moments that occur on any sh1p. This cruise book has been developed to show all of the above. It IS hoped that 1n later years you may look beek through these pages and recall the events reflected with a SenS9 of pride and enjoyment- Special thanks to you, Chief Timcho, for your many hourS of picture shooting, and Your Chief Krizan and EM3 Hermann, for those many hours in the darkroom. ,4 J A5 i 5 g .
