From the Commanding Officer! Those of you who were privileged to serve on WICHITA during the 1970 - 71 WESTPAC deployment were afforded a rare opportunity.k You were Daft of a new crew on the first operational assignment of not only a new ship, but the first of an entirely new class Of ships. 0 As we sailed back to Long Beach and home early in 1971 the results of your efforts were becoming obvious. WICHITA had certainly proved the wisdom of the replenish- ment oiler concept. During the seven months operations WICHITA had 246 ships along- side for replenishment. Oper- ating as a one-stop multi- product ship WICHITA delivered over 30,000,000 gallons of oil and gasoline, 10,000 tons of ammunition, over 450 tons of provisions plus fleet freight, mail and personnel. Half of the underway replenishments were conducted 'during the hours of darkness and some in the face of extremely hazardous weather. We will all remember the un- ladylike typhoons that hampered our plans. On the lighter side, two visits to Hong Kong, plus stops in Yokosuka, Japan and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii helped ease the tensions a bit.
