‘I Believe’ And Pride Lead Panthers To Winning Streak 1975’s Whitmer football team came back to achieve a successful 7-3 season. Starting shakily, the Panthers allowed St. Francis’ aerial attack to achieve 27 first half points. In the second half the Whitmer defense settled down and produced a mild comeback that reduced the final margin to 27-12. Facing Newark, the Panthers played well overall, but lost in the final quarter when Newark crammed in two touchdowns for a 26-15 victory. Trailing 24-0 in the fourth quarter against Findlay, probably the toughest team on the Panther schedule, Whitmer came through to score the first points the Trojans allowed all season and close the final gap to 24-6. Whitmer finally began to BELIEVE in themselves as victors when they stop¬ ped Clay’s 20 game unbeaten streak with a 14-7 conquest. Cliff Bartelt was a major factor in the win as he blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone. The victory returned the Little Brown Jug to Whitmer’s possession. St. Johns, undefeated and ranked first in the computer ratings of northwestern Ohio, became the second victim of the improving Panthers, 20-7. Whitmer gained two more wins with defeats of Start, 21-19 in a sloppy, but exciting homecoming game, and Macomber, 24-0 on a cold and rainy night. Traveling to Bedford, the Panthers latched on to a 7-0 victory as Pete Kasper broke three tackles on a 28 yard sweep in the third period. Sylvania, having its best season in 20 years, couldn’t stop Kasper and fullback Mike Remer as Whitmer gained its third straight shutout, 17-0. Whitmer completed the season with its seventh consecutive victory, 20-12 over Central. Remer had a tremendous 244 yards rushing, and Ken Zawistowski broke a school record by hauling in his sixth pass interception of the year. Outstanding seniors pulling together to make the season a success were Jeff Dunn, Mike Fiedler, Ed Cytlak, Ken Zawistowski, Mike Remer, Tim Samples, Ron Gardner, Cliff Bartelt, Ron Coale, Tom Spooner, Tom Navarre, Don Dottei, Gary Malinovsky, Mike Wiseman, Dave Adler, Bob Deedman, and Jim Koval. Linebacker Jeff Dunn was named to the All-District first team and received honorable mention for All-Ohio. Tailback Pete Kasper was a second team district choice, while Cliff Bartelt and Ed Cytlak gained honorable mention. Senior distance man Jim TerDoest turns on his speed while coming downhill at Ft. Meigs. A dual meet record of 8-4 and a trip to the state meet for Rich Perry were the results of the “best season ever” for the cross-country team. Displaying fine teamwork at the Perrysburg and Bowling Green invitationals, the Panthers took fourth and fifth places, respectively. They kept their spirits high as they advanced to the sectional and district meets. The team sent seven runners to sectionals, and the resulting third place finish moved all seven into the districts where they captured sixth place. Senior Rich Perry then journeyed to the state meet in Columbus where he placed 16th with a school record time of 9:54. This was the first time the Panthers had ever been represented in the state cross-country meet. Other harriers doing outstanding jobs were seniors Greg Alt, Dave Duke, Chris Grill, Steve Kimple, and Jim TerDoest. They received strong support from junior Randy Osentoski and sophomores Ken Gehring and Marty Maag. Putting out an extra effort, Ken Gehring and Dave Duke push past a tiring opponent.
