BASKETBALL Basketball practice started early in the season with a large squad reporting to Coach John Kelly. As most of last year's squgd'was back, prospects were bright for the coming year. Both teams lost their first games of the season to Hoyt on the Hoyt court, But the first team found its stride in the next game, against Effingham, and kept up its winning streak until the final game of the county tournament at Holton when it was defeated by the Mayetta Indians by one point. Both play- ers and fans will remember this close fought and exciting game. The Eagle first team was weakened through out both the county and the district tourna- ment by the loss of Warren Brown, regular cen- ter, who became ill with pneumonia about a week before the county tournamlnt. Warren was able to play some in the regional tournament. After'w1nning second place in the county tournament, the Eagles went on to win their second, second place trophy of the year in the finals of the district tournament at Circle- ville. Wetmore was the victor in this by a narrow margin of two points. The was not so successful, however, in the tournament, losing to the Valley in the first round.
