Language opens doors When we took a look at foreign language classes last year, we found a lot more than just the lan- guage. We saw the many Spanish and French cultures and ways of life, interesting music, and deli- cious foods. The foreign language depart- ment gained a new member, Mr. W.J. Robertson. We asked Mr. Robertson how he felt about teaching at Whiteland, and this is what he said: I consider teaching here to be a good chance to en- courage students to open their eyes and look beyond their own limits . . . Students need to chal- lenge themselves to go onward to bigger and better things. D. Debbie Foley watches Mrs. Wood cut the cake as she celebrates her birthday with her second year French class. E. Junior Rob Tolle responds to a Spanish command in his third year class. F. Junior Mark Arthur uses a tu com- mand to tell his classmate Paul Felix to do sit-ups in third year Spanish. English Department gets new faces At first glance, English looks like a normal academics class, but upon closer inspection we found students doing demonstration speeches, dramatic readings, and projects. Sophomores and juniors also worked with Greek and Latin roots, as well as learning and prac- ticing techniques of debate. This year for the first time in re- cent years, there was an average senior English class. Also, we had two new teachers in Whiteland's English Department. Mrs. Janet Mitchell remarked, I am proud to be a member of the WCHS staff. I feel that the teach- ers here are top notch. The stu- dents too have been great to work with. Mrs. Sandra Cook added, I don't think I could have chosen a better place to begin my career. A. Sophomore Chris Flack demonstrates his wrestling skills on Brian Poindexter for his English class. A B. Julie Whitney detends herself against C. Renee Felix demonstrates how to apply her attacker Alan Granger in Senior Hon- clown make-up on Stephanie Carter for ors English. Mrs. Duke's sophomore English closs. 24 ENGLISH

Math classes improve to help students Normally, when you think of math, you think of formulas and figures, but this year's math classes were anything but normal. Students could take classes rang- ing from beginning math to calcu- lus, from geometry to computer math. This was the first year for a se- mester class in PASCAL, taught by Mrs. Phyllis Reynolds. Learning this computer language helped stu- dents prepare for college classes. A. Freshman Amy Lind works on an assign- ment in her algebra class. 26 MATH
