Also employed were 36 bus drivers, three mechanics, and a director of transportation who, with the superintendent, determined whether roads were passable in winter or whether classes should be cancelled. The float winning first place was Happiness Hotel sponsored by the German Club. Girls field hockey and cross country's Kermit the Frog and Grover placed second. A third place went to the cheerleaders' float with Miss Piggy riding on it. The German Club's first place float, The Happiness Hotel Bus, drives around the track. Muppet Miss Piggy gets dressed up by cheerleaders. (Right) Senior boys work on Oscar the Grouch and Grover. Field hockey players and cross country runners combine efforts on a float. Mitch VanNorman reigns as queen On a cold, windy October night and after many long days of preparation, clubs and groups paraded their homecoming floats and queen candidates around the football field. The Homecoming theme was Muppet Madness. The creations on the floats depicted characters from Seasame Street and The Muppets TV shows. 1980 Homecoming Queen Laurie Kalinak crowned Michelle VanNorman as the 1981 queen (left). The story, told with spirited singing and dancing, concerns a miracle tonic which is responsible for making Li'l Abner the hulk of a man that he is. After that, the girls played some class teams in the East Penn Conference but came up on the short side. In District singles competition, senior Chris Balliet reached the quarterfinals before losing to the fourth seed. The girls got off to a good start by winning the first game against Freedom 1-0. They also won 3-0 when they played the Patriots a second time. The team recorded decisive wins against Liberty both times they met, 4-1, 1-0, respectively. The girls won the first time they met Dieruff and N'hampton, but when they met for a second time later in the season, the Zephyrettes lost. Nothing stopped the girls from avenging an earlier loss to Parkland 1-2. This time they came out on top 3-1 after overtime and double flicks. The Zephs won Division I after they beat Parkland 60-55. This was the third time the two teams had met on the court. Jean Millen, Holly Baer, and Sue Ludwig each delivered 13 points. Behind the scoring of Ludwig, Millen and Karen Schmidt, who each had a 10-point game, and Baer who had an 8-point game, the Zephs came out on top 41-34 when they first met Parkland. Later when the two teams met. Parkland won 48-45. The girls, led by Ludwig with a career high of 23 points, eased by Bethlehem Catholic 64-46. The girls whirled by Emmaus 67-35. The second time the two teams met, Millen scored her 1,000th point and led the Zephs past Emmaus 73-42. Millen received one rose for each 100 points from Coach Armstrong. She was also given the game ball. The girls were first in the East Penn League in total offense averaging 57.5 points per game. The girls became Division 1 champs by beating Becahi 7-1. Martina Oswald went two-for-two at the plate. They just missed the East Penn title by losing to Parkland 3-0. The Zephyrettes, who were seeded first, won their first District game by beating East Stroudsburg 4-3. Oswald put down a bunt in the eighth inning to bring home the winning run. The Zephs also won their second game in Districts by beating Solehi 7-1. The next two games were disappointing losses: one to Parkland 7-1 and to Boyertown 6-4. Boyertown went on to place fourth in state competition. During Simone Wenzel's two hitter, she struck out nine and went two-for-three at the plate to lead the Zephs past Central Catholic 2-0. Star pitcher Wenzel threw a nohitter against Liberty 8-0 which made the last game of the regular season much easier for the Zephs. Wenzel, Carol Grubb, Jean Millen, Oswald, Holly Baer and Donna Remaly represented the Zephyrettes in the first annual senior All-Star tournament. The Zephs East Penn 1 team won the tournament. Coach Joseph Cerencser's team shut out Nazareth 18-0 in the opener as Marc Bolesky ran for 132 yards. Non-league Central Bucks East was tough and fought to a 6-6 tie. Mount Carmel came up with a 94-yard interception return which enabled them to gain a come-from-behind victory over the Zephyrs 13-12. Junior Tim Knopf ran for 157 yards in a 38-15 romp of Bethlehem Catholic. A 201-yard ground game from fullback Mark Bonshak produced a convincing 21-0 win over Northampton. Bonshak scored 18 points as the Zephyrs blew away the Hurricanes of Liberty 30-7. The Allen Canaries upset the Zephyrs in gusting winds Homecoming night 23-14. The Zephyrs played one of their best games of the season in a 30-3 win over Parkland. Signal-caller Barry Buchman threw and scrambled for a pair of touchdowns and Steve Gerencser capped off a 60-yard drive to end the first half, enabling the Zephyrs to beat Dieruff 24-16. Winless Central Catholic was not in the Zephyrs' league in a 26-0 loss. The defense got all the points that were needed to down a tough defensive Phillipsburg team. The winning streak continued as the junior Zephs beat Liberty 30-14. Whitehall played outstanding defense and scored twice to shut out Allen 14-0. The junior Zephs downed the Trojans of Parkland 22-0. The Zephs scored on runs by Kuklinski, Gill and Bob Perl. When the Zephs and Huskies had their 6-0 encounter, both teams showed good defenses, but the Zephs pulled it off on John Lilly's 18-yard run. Whitehall suffered its only loss, 8-0, at the hands of the Phillipsburg Stateliners, making the team's record 8-1-1. It was All-State guard Scott Coval who took charge at the end of the third quarter for a lead the team never relinquished, making White- hall the first Eastern team in eight years to win it all. With 18 points, Coval was voted the game's MVP The team swept Springfield-Delco 51-42 in the Eastern Finals in Reading. When Mike Bobyak scored with six minutes to go, fans' chants of Hershey! Hershey! erupted. In the Eastern Semi-finals, Williamsport gave Whitehall early trouble, but Glenn Noack contributed 17 points for a decisive final score of 66-59. The Zephyrs completed the year with 25 consecutive wins and unble- mished Conference (18-0) and Division 1 (12-0) records. With 35 wins and 2 losses, they boasted the most wins in a season, and tied with the '80-'81 team for the least number of losses. And with fine sportsmanship and only 346 personal fouls, the least in the conference, the Zephyrs did more than prove themselves champions. They proved themselves heroes. This includes the loss to Allen in the beginning of the season at an exhibition game. After losing their first two-out-of-three games, the junior Zephs rallied to win the next 22 in a row. Their final loss came at the hands of the Nazareth Blue Eagles by a score of 48-39 at the last game of the season. Rick Scholl and Bill Wagner were the Zephs' leading scorers with 251 and 231 points, respectively. Kyle Kern was the assists and steals leader with 45 assists and 43 steals. Mark Molchany added 44 assists and 32 steals. Kern and Scholl suited up for the varsity games, and Molchany was added for extra depth on the bench while the Zephs were en route to their state title. Of those 12 losses, five were close 4-3 defeats against stiff competition. In District mixed doubles, Bruce Nisberg and Chris Balliet made a fine effort but lost 6-1, 7-6 to Emmaus, the eventual tournament winner. Frank Rose and Nisberg, Zephyr entries for District doubles, beat Bethlehem Catholic 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, but were defeated by top-seeded Parkland 6-1, 6-0 in the next round. Jim Morgan and Dave Skeath were beaten by the fourth-seeded team in the tournament, 6-0, 6-0. The Zephs had a slow season but pulled together to win their last two meets. They took a while to develop, stated Coach Grammes, but at the end they came along. The boys fought off a late Northampton rally May 6 to win 87-67. Dan Menneti, Mike Thomas, Tom Hogan, and Roy Bachert teamed to win the 1600-meter relay. At the last meet of the season, in a 79-71 win over Stroudsburg, Bob Kincaid captured both the 1600- and 3200-meter races. The Zephs beat Pocono Mountain 7-2 in the District XI quarterfinals, and then went on to beat Emmaus 5-3 in the semi-final game. Emmaus had defeated the Zephs twice in regular season play. Northampton took Districts by beating Whitehall 5-2. In the semifinal Regional game against Phoenixville, the Zephs fell 3-1. Tim Knopf, with 76 at bats, had the highest batting average, .355. Mark Berner had the second highest batting average, .319, with 72 at bats. Leading the defense were pitchers Greg Perl and Aaron Miller with 2.47 and 3.34 ETAs, respectively.
