Mark Bonshak, junior, passed the seasonal 1,000-yard mark and was the top scorer in the Lehigh Valley with 148 points. Lineman Tony Piccin, senior, was honored by being named to Parade Magazine’s All-American team. The Zephyrs suffered their first and only loss when they dropped one to Nazareth 13-0. Meeting Emmaus, they rushed for 232 yards and passed for 53 yards to stomp the Hornets 34-0. Whitehall was to face Central Bucks East, but a Whitehall teachers’ strike cancelled the game and forced the Zephs to forfeit. The Zephs ran right over Becahi 59-7. Bonshak scored three of the eight touchdowns. Other TD’s were scored by Steve Gerencser, Terry Burns, Steve Gitch, Greg Hilt, and Tim Knopf. Whitehall mauled yet another team; this time the score was 35-13 over Northampton. The defensive line had no mercy on the Northampton rushing game. The kids had -30 yards on the ground. The Zephyr running backs did the job again: Burns scored once, Bonshak scored three times, and Gerencser scored twice. continued 98 Down the line “I really demand perfection from all team members, and Joe Gerencser’s teams do not get stopped on the two-yard line.” Coach Joseph Gerencser in the air Defense Whitehall’s defensive line surges against the Dieruff Huskies. The defense allowed a mere 32 yards on the ground and 15 by air. The Zephs took the field on a mild Halloween night against Dieruff. The team gave the home fans a show of tough defense, offense and determined attitude. Central Catholic fell prey to the mighty Zephyr machine 43-17. Bonshak scored four times setting a staggering pace on individual scoring. Whitehall played its final game against P'burg and won 27-0. In state competition, Whitehall first defeated Central Dauphin 57-41. They moved up another notch when they defeated Bensalem 65-51. This was Whitehall’s 30th straight win. Whitehall finally met its match in Springfield-Delco. The Zephs fell behind by six points, and the score stood 28-32 at the final buzzer. In district competition, Whitehall beat Pottsville 60-47, then liberty 56-45. Only Dieruff stood between Whitehall and the district crown. With 6’7” senior Wes Wright scoring 20 points and outstanding junior Scott Coval adding another 15, the Huskies fell to the mighty Zephyrs 72-52. Whitehall, a division one East Penn Conference team, also won the EPC championship. This is the first time a division one team has ever captured the top place. The Zephyrs played Easton, a strong division two team, for the championship and beat them 41-35. The win was especially significant since Easton was the only team that had beaten Whitehall during the season. The mighty Zephyrs ended the season with a 33-2 record. Wright and Coval were the top scorers on the team. Coval led with 412 and Wright followed with 400. Just before Christmas, December 23, when the Zephyrs played Northampton, Coval reached the 1000-career-point marker. Both boys were named to the first team EPC All-stars. Prom couples caught in the romantic mood of the evening. 153 GRADUATION v It was a sticky, sweltering 95 degrees on June 16 when 368 seniors pulled heavy gowns over suits, dresses, and even cut-offs and tee shirts and lined up outside the football stadium Before commencement exercises began. During the ceremony, valedictorian Brenda Schneck and salu-tatorian Barry Harrison delivered their speeches. Awards were given to students for their achievements and to the top ten students Brenda, Barry, Ann Carpenter. Lori Ludwig, Diane Hessinger, Kelly Malika, Carol Mondschein, Stephen Karoly, John Kroboth, and Anne Seifert for their scholastic performances. When it was all over, the class of '81 cheered, whistled, tossed their caps skyward in celebration (and perhaps relief), and said their goodbyes as WHS students for the last time. You BET I'm wearing shorts. Guest speaker is LaForcst Smith. Below: Graduates are lost in thoughts or dreams “One more pin Dawnyle, says LeAnn. Photo expert Michael Zarecky and Diane Hessinger pick pictures. Special thanks to Dale Faix from Minipho Studios in Allentown who was our professional photographer. He took pictures of the band and choir, special events, and sports contests. He took all of the team photos and many of the portraits in the senior section. Another special thanks to Michael Zarecky who, in his spare time, developed and printed most of the pictures by the student photographers. Dave Morgan Studios, Flourtown, Pennsylvania, took all of the underclassman photographs. American Yearbook Company printed the 1981 yearbook in Topeka, Kansas. Bill O'Brien, yearbook representative, patiently coordinated our efforts with those of his company.
