For the grand finale Wayne Nottle directs all the bands in the playing of the “National Anthem. ” Mr. Nottle said he wished more activities of this type were supported by the students. With walkie talkie in hand, William Parks. Key Club adviser, receives a message that Upper Merion band is next to give its 10-minute performance. New changes and old traditions marked the 1972 Homecoming festivities. Unlike other years, any school organization could sponsor a senior girl as a candidate for queen. The group, however, had to provide a float for its nominee. Another innovation was the representation of ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades by three attendants. Previously each class elected two girls for the court. At the conclusion of the game’s exciting first half, the spectators anxiously awaited the announcement of the new queen. The Zephyr band provided soft music as the candidates and the attendants were escorted on to the field. Moments later, a surprised and happy Trudy Vymazal was named Linda Ha-berern’s successor to the title. Trudy was sponsored by the cheerleaders. Members of her court included Kathy Boyer, Jody Clauser, Debbie Galgon, Rita Hughes, Jane Reiser, Cindy Schock, Kathy Schoonover, Regina Schrampf, and Maddi Slivka. All who attended the Homecoming Dance the previous night voted for the queen. Music was provided by Fuzzy Bunny. Class floats carried smiling underclassman attendants. Freshman attendants were Sherry Hontz, Karen Schwenk, and Bonnie Weiss. Carla Rohrbach, Kay Schunk, and Diane Stockmal represented the sophomores, and the junior court included Louise Keppel, Sharon Rohrbach, and Aleita Steckel. Floats were judged by five adults selected from the school and community. They were Mrs. Jean Schunk, guidance secretary, Franklin Baer, school board director, Irwin Neifert, mayor of Coplay, Mrs. Catherine Malast, secretary to the principal, and Richard Hoch, township commissioner. The Usherettes constructed the prize winning float, a beautiful flowered bull representing “73 the Year of the Bull.” “Because all the floats were so creative,” said Mrs. Schunk, “it was a very difficult decision to make.” Homecoming was sponsored by The Owl. Bob Bechtold and Royce Rosenberger were co-chairmen for the weekend festivities. “The floats were beautiful,” said Bob, “the queen was beautiful, and we won the game. It couldn’t have been nicer.” 29 homecoming
