For the third time in Whitehall’s history, portable lights beamed down on the athletic field, setting the stage for “Music in Motion,” the cavalcade sponsored by the Marching Zephyr Band. Newcomers, Allen High School marchers, grabbed first place honors in the competition October 14. Each band performed approximately 10 minutes for a crowd of over 5,000 with the judging taking place in music, marching, and general effect. Second and third places went to North Penn and Northampton, respectively. As host for the evening Whitehall was not included in the place scoring, but gave a demonstrative performance for the participants. Trophies were presented by William Bodisch, school board president. “We had a good crowd, a good show, and excellent weather for our third ‘Music in Motion’,” said Wayne Nottle, band director. Other years Whitehall participated in cavalcades almost every weekend during the season. But this year the band was only involved in three compet itions, a very low count comparison. This was a result of few sponsoring schools. Of the three attended, the Dieruff festival September 28 was the only cavalcade in which they were rated. They received an “excellent” in marching and a “good” in music. The other two competitions were the Globe Times Festival of Bands at Liberty High School stadium October 3 and one at Pocono Mountain High School September 23. With a left, right, left the Marching Zephyr Band displays the impor- only be exhibition, but a large crowd of5,000 adds excitement to their third tant marching technique of keeping feet in step while parading on to the annual cavalcade. Seven bands participated in the event which was won by field. Band members are slightly relaxed knowing their performance will Allen High School, a newcomer. cavalcade 26

This was a year for big changes in the appearance of the high school campus. The Whitehall-Coplay School District planned major additions that began in spring with a 3.6 million dollar bond issue. Scheduled for construction were a bus garage, fieldhouse, elementary school, stadium lights, and adjustments to improve the baseball field. The fieldhouse will be located between the football stadium and the practice field. Coach Andrew Melosky remarked that the field-house should have been built five to 10 years ago. “Along with the lights in the stadium, they will be worth their weight in gold,” he said. The fieldhouse and the greatly needed bus garage were both started in April. The new elementary school will have 40 rooms and house 1,200 students. The township, along with the campus, grew too. A multi-million dollar development known as the Presidential Estates was approved by the Whitehall Township Commissioners. This building project, expected to be completed in 1977, will take up about 135 acres. Some household types include townhouses, apartments, singles, doubles, and fourplexes. The development will bring abojjt 1,500 new students into the Whitehall-Coplay schools at an estimated cost of $1,650,000 yearly. 25 changes
