CLASS FLOWER — RED ROSE SNAPSHOTS CLASS HISTORY This document, fished up yesterday, is the record of a band of young people whose achievements are greater than all others known at White Plains High. We stand at the threshold of life. Various doors are opening for us, but as we, the class of 53, go for- ward with the anticipation of work in a new field of life, our hearts are sad as we close the door of our— life and work at dear old hite Plains High. Memory will carry us back to these happy days, then we will be interested in our record. Our six years of high school life have been happy years of work together. Although we have faced some difficulties, we were always able to overcome them. In August, 1947, we entered the seventh grade. Mr. C.R. Allen was at that time principal. There were 55 students in our class. Mrs. Hollingsworth was our home- room teacher. In August,194S, when we again entered school our new homeroom teacher was Mr. S.T. Gardner. We were thrilled over our new teacher. Mr. Gardner is still one of our most loved teachers. All of our class must remember the school year of 49-50. We were now in the ninth grade with. Mrs. McClinton as our homeroom teacher. On March IS, 1950, our school burned to the ground. The Home Economics and Agricult- ure Building were all that was left standing. We fin- ished the rest of the school term by using the Agricul- ture building , canning plant, and the churches. We entered school in August, 1950, with Mr. Fried- man as our new principal. Work had begun on the new building but it was not nearly finished. This year we had Coach Williamon as our guiding hand. By now we had lost several members of our class. In August, 1951, we were a happy group of students when we entered our new building. It was the first time since the school burned that we could have a room called our own. Miss Helen Holmes was our homeroom teacher. We will always remember our Junior Play, Thats My Boy . It was certainly a great success. This year we lost only one member of our class, Billy Joe Murray. He was trans- ferred to Ranburn. On August 25, 1952, we entered White Plains High once more. We were now dignified seniors. We had several new teachers to guide our steps; They v;ere Mr. L.E. Youngblood, principal.; Jfir, Campbell, our homeroom teacher; and Mrs. Gilman our English teacher. Many things had taken place during the summer. Three of our girls had cast their anchors and plunged off into the sea of matrimony. Much to our surprise, Sarah Angel and Olene Penny came back to complete their last year in school. Emma Allsup dropped out to go to Alaska, where her husband was stationed. Nathalie Holley again joined our class. She had transferred to Oxford, but came back to complete her senior year at White Plains. Dorothy Walker, a transfer from Alexandra, also joined our class. We elected the following class officers, Ronald Upshaw, President; Sybil Story, Vice President; Gaye Cheatwood, Secretary; and Betty Reid, Treasurer. We wish to express our many thanks and appreciations to all our teachers both past and present. They have all labored to help us through the rugged places, which were many. As we depart, we want to take our places in the world and make our marks high realizing that except for pain and separation, we could not have the ;pleasure of meeting again . We, the class of 53 Promise never to forget our school, forever will there reside in our hearts the dear old White Plains spirit . So, with tears in our eyes ,we bid farewell to dear old White Flains High. Historian; Betty Reid Class Poem Harkl Ye people lend me an earl A story of the seniors of White Plains you’ll hear. They are a wise group, also very jolly, Smart indeed, but not immuned to folly. I have not a standard to judge their shapes and sizes, Nor even a definite color as to their hair and eyes. Oh, no, we’re not all alike, but rather assorted and a very nice class---so I've heard reportedI First, we'll take our sponsor, a lover of blue, Also capable of beating shorthand into our heads too. He's very adapt a band, knows many typing tricks, But tells us definitely----bookeeping and chewing gum will not mixI Then there's the rest of our teachers, all females. As to which is the most beautiful, it's hard to tell. One dark, one blond, and one between, But as to the most progressive? That's to be seen. Now we'll take the seniors-Mary Borden is first. She eats and eats at lunch, till she almost bursts. As a result this lady is rather plump And if she should fall down, oh what a bumpl Ronald Upshaw, who is very Cute. (Any other words just simply won't suit) Is very good and graceful at playing ball. Also very pleasant, not shy to girls at all. Syble Story, tho' high-tempered she may be, Is really smart as we all can see. She certainly knows her P Q's and all answers too. Betty Ann Reid is in a terrible plight Because, she does study with all her might. I think it's because she loves a Sr. 11. But, well, I won't tell her secrets to you. Otis Cain is wise as an old owl. Just let him make a C or D and you'll hear Him growl. Willie Wyatt Coleman a bus driver is he, Always neat and particular as can be. In all his classes he flirts With girls who wears glasses. Charles Thornburg, a handsome lad is he, Think’s it is luck if he gets a D . One young lady, Sarah Angel, by name, Is almost sure to rise to fame. In all her classes she is up to par, And if she keeps climbing she’ll be a star. Where’s Annie Lois Murray, so young and bright Talking t o the boys-----her one delight. Bobby Ward, so dignified and pleasing, Always ready to help in time of need, And wethink he’s really good in selling magazine subscriptions. Olene Penny, so very jolly and gay, Seems to be happy all through the day. Now the young lady, who is very tall, Is Dorothy Davis, a good friend to all. There comes Gaye with a book. Why this? We must all take a lookl Of course, we don’t believe she will study. Oh, noi She is only looking for Juanita her buddy. Now, there is Miss Dorothy, dignified star, Which makes her and Evai Lois a noticable pair As slowly down the hall they go. There is one girl who has a lot of pride. This one is Miss Nathalie Holley, Who is a very good sport, we are all sure. She leads a life that's sweet and pure. Is Jerre Cole such a dignified type? Will Harvard Wheeler, we wonder, ever like Engli-sh? These questions we cannot answer yet, But we will someday, you bet. There is Arnette more widely known as Troy” He likes to sing, but never plays the piano, Although he walks and acks almost like a king. Oh, here comes Ernest Burns. It is he, I know, because he can sing. V t Now classmates, we’ll have to say good-bye, But, do not let your love for White Plains die. Live in her thoughts and teachings forever, And never let her memory sever. So our dear Alama Mater, farewell to thee, May your g lorious halls never be free. From the echoing sound to always be true” And this we earnestly pledge to you. Senior Phophecy Juanita Hall Time: 1963 Place: Jacksonville Scene: Living room on a snowy evening Character: Juanita and ? Guess who came to see me today? Ronald Upshaw, one of the boys who graduated with me ten years ago from White Plains High School. He has just returned from Mars, where his wife, Dorthey Davis, is running in a beauty contest. Gaye Cheatwood is up there selling hamburgers__went up in the first Wheeler plane____(Prof. Harvard Wheeler, the preat inventor, you know.) Ronald was interested in all our classmates of 1952-53. He was very surprised when I told him Jerry Cole was a manufacturer of Fords. You know, he marr- ied Dorthey Walker___quite a society leader. She is also instructor of athletics at White Plains and wrote a book on How to Keep (Jerry) from Making Fouls in Basketball. Ronald said on his way here from Mars he stopped at a country church. He was very much surprised when he saw Ernest Burns as the preacher. He had Jimmie Dale Bains down on his knees. Poor Jimmie I Audrey Grimes broke his heart and he's been a woman hater ever since. Audrey is a very brilliant woman. She became a teacher. What do you think of Charles Thornburg as Ala- bama's new governor? Charles was always a big jump in all the classes. Ronald said that when he stopped off in New York, he was surprised to see Nath- lie Holley singing on the street corner in the Salva- tion Army. You know some of our classmates are very popular. For instance, Olene Penny (the talk of Paris) married the richest man in Europe, and Eva Lois Mayo is her social secretary. Speaking of queer occupations, Ronald said he saw Otis Cain at Mars. Believe it or not, he was selling plows to the farmers oh Mars. It seems that some or our class haven't done so well. Do you remember Troy Arnett and Willie Wyatt Coleman? Ronald says that they are the two biggest crooks in the Chicago underworld. After Ronald left I decided to go over to Ried's Beauty Parlor. I must have been in a deep study be- cause someone caught my arm just in time to save me from being knocked down by a truck. I turned around to thank this person and looked into the face of Bobby Ward___a traffic copl Can you imagine anything worse! As I entered Ried’s Beauty Parlor, there Betty Ann set writing a special page in the Ladies Home Journal, for girls, on How to Flirt. Of course you remember Sarah Angel. She marr- ied a wealthy physician of Chicago, but Ronald says he is gradually dwindling away listening to Sarah exercije her mouth every morning before breakfast. ear, you are so interested in politics, perhaps this will interest you: Mary Borden is our greatest Con- gresswoman. Annie Lois Murray and Syble Story are mak- ing expeditions to ..'ashington to put in applications for men. They may get their calls anytime. Ronald tells me that Prof. Youngblood is still teaching less educations and more fun. He is as sq- uare as they make'em. He led the Senior Class over several bumps. My knowledge was very dim but he showed me the way to promotion?? It’s a good old world after all isn’t it? . 4 - V .
