With enough tangents to impress even Euclid, the diversity of Mrs. Capizzano's involvement parallels that of the student body. Firstly, she is a fine math teacher. Although many students complain about her surprise quizzes and terrifying tests, all who enter her class in September leave in June with a much improved knowledge of mathematics. This is a direct result of her genuine enthusiasm for teaching and for her subject area. Yet Mrs. Capizzano teaches not only theorems of math, but theorems of life. Mrs. Capizzano's infinite range of interests has caused her to expand her involvement outside of the classroom. She donated her inexhaustible spirit in organizing a forum on women in math and science, encouraging women to consider careers that all too often seem reserved for men. She also demonstrated the absolute value of leadership when she became our junior class advisor. More than just a great teacher, Mrs. Capizzano is a positive influence and a good friend. So memorize the above derivation, Mrs. Cap, and never forget the following formula: Um OUry Ca o° x— CO ' 4 It is to you, our phaloogamous teacher, that we dedicate the 1982 Oracle. 5 Oracle Script 1: PHALOOGAMY What do you mean you didn't have breakfast this morning? From Venezuela to White Plains, or vice versa, is a big step and a very rewarding one. Sharing cultures and friendships, stu- dents of both nationalities had unforgettable experiences. In short, este programa tuvo exito! 59 French Club o ro International Dinner Different foods, different music, different people, different clothes, dif- ferent tastes. What could be more phaloogamous than all of the WPHS cultural clubs gathered together at one party? The Italian club danced; the French club provided quiche, quiche . . . and more quiche. The German club sang; the Spanish club tried to smash a pinata . . . and finally did. The Latin representa- tives came decked out in togas. All told, it was quite a phaloogamously fun-filled evening. 63 Halloween The halls fill with people of the past, the latest fads, and creatures of the imagination. Robin Hood, a punk rock star, and a hairy green monster are just some of the phaloogamous iden- tities which otherwise normal people assume on Halloween. You won't find many witches or ghosts at this high school! Being different is the point, and on Halloween anything but the usual is expected. 65 This year's fall play was a true classic and, as usual, the production was truly classy. Our Town is a director's dream — a classic Ameri- can play, with interesting and diverse charac- ters, and an important message to relay. And under Mrs. McSweeney's direction, the cast met its full potential and made Our Town live once again. Each year, the Fall Play is a sober- ing, but more importantly, an interesting production, and this year the tradition was carried off brilliantly. Our Town by Thornton Wilder 66 FALL PLAY How often do WPHS students return to school on a Friday night to sit in a study hall? How often are waitresses seen serving students at school? How often can N1 boast standing room only? These phenomena occur only once a year — at the annual North House Cabaret Night. The trip back to school is well worthwhile when it means seeing fellow students performing live nightclub acts. The phaloogaminity of our student body is evident in the variety and quality of entertainment. From satiri- cal skits to original songs, Cabaret truly provides something for everyone. 67 “We love you Conrad, oh yes we do . . . We love you Conrad, and we'll be true . . . While it is true that the girls loved Conrad, it is also true that everybody loved this year's Spring production of Bye, Bye, Birdie! Under the experi- enced direction of Jack Naughton, Sharon Greene and Al Renino, the cast did a great job of carrying on a high school tradition. Bye, Bye, Birdie! is a musical for all ages, and the cast proved itself capable of portraying a diverse range of ages. Some cast members even played both adults and kids. Now that's diversity and tal- ent! 69 Dance Show Every spring, talented stu- dents work together to create one of the finest productions presented on the WPHS stage. Under the direction of Ginny Williamson, enthusiastic chor- eographers and dancers are given the opportunity to demonstrate the beauty and grace of the human body. Many forms of dance are repre- sented: ballet, jazz, modern, tap, and African. An integral part of the show is the spectacle of it — the fine lighting and sound system provided by the stage crew. The technical and creative aspects of the show combine to produce an evening of aesthetic delights. 70 Symphony of Movement Synchronized Swimming One of the most neglected organizations at WPHS is the syn- chronized swim team. Team members put in long hours of practice from March until May in order to execute their routines with seemingly effortless precision. Coaches Crosse and Rose work with the girls to perfect group numbers, as well as duets and solos. The fluidity of a synchronized swimming performance complements the sophistication of the dance show for a unique Symphony of Movement. 71 Cross Country Coach Nick Panaro has good reason to be proud of his cross country team this year. Captain Caroline Cardon, and sophomores Nina Braslow and Susan Thomas turned in respectable perfor- mances for the Tigers. Two members of the boys' team — Captain Kevin Donnelly and junior Kent Partlow — advanced to the All- County championships. Kent then continued on to the state meet for his second year in a row. Successes such as these make the long hours of practice well worthwhile. 76 Varsity junior Varsity Field Hockey The girls' field hockey team may have been disappointed with their record this season, but WPHS certainly wasn't disappointed with the spirit they showed on the playing field. Under the leadership of Coach Barbara Skrivanek, and Co-Captains Chris Ciuliano and Stacey Hecker, the team developed a strong defense. Stacey proved to be an expert goalie, accumulating 106 saves during the season. The girls ended their season with a good sense of sportsman- ship, and improved playing skills. FOOTBALL junior Varsity The North Twin 7 Halfback Go, the 48 Pitch Sweep, and the Quarterback Keeper are just some of the many diverse plays of the football team used this year. Comple- tion of such strategies led the Tigers to a victorious 9-1 season. Highlights of the season include a 28-0 rout over Kingston to claim the Section A Bowl Championship, and a 42-20 victory over Stepinac in the annual Turkey Bowl. Jim Donahoe, start- ing quarterback and Most Valuable Player, had a strong season, often connecting for six points with Jon Little, backup quarter- back, and Wayne Anderson, who ran three punts for TD's himself. Girls' Swimming Just as the four basic strokes in competitive swimming are diverse, so are those who swim them. While chancing by a 1981-82 girls' swim meet, one might have heard such things as: Yo Breath!, Hey, Wonder Woman, can't you do any better than a one minute 100 Fly?, Coach 'O', do you really have stock in Wrigley's?, Whad up?, and I went down to the river . . . Through the cheers, smiles, and dripping hair we saw a success- ful team swim and dive its ways into the sectionals. Two members, Laura McCabe and Helen An- tonelle, continued on to the state competition. Co-Captain Lisa Freed has been known to say about the team, I like sailing! 83 AJ Ciris' tennis had a successful year under Coach Sharon Greene. Co-Captains Dawn Fagenson and Diane Heyde, other seniors Caroline Honig and Denise Weinberg, and junior Lisa Freitag played in the divisional championships. There Diane and Lisa ad- vanced as far as the quarterfinals. The team's overall record was 7-6. Diane reflected on the team's season by saying, We had a win- ning season, and had fun, too!” The 1981-82 varsity soccer team had a respectable season under the direction of Co- Captains lose Formoso and Luis Pereira, who were assisted by fine players such as Todd Silva and Paul Marcotullio. The high- light of the season was the 1-0 win over Scarsdale, a long-time rival of the Tigers. This year's record of 8-8-1 promises future success for a fairly young team. junior Varsity 87 This year's girls' varsity vol- leyball team nad a successful sea- son due to the leadership of Coach Sandra Burno-DeBerry, and Co- Captains Monica Moose Fraioli and Lisa Dutch Anson. Lisa's masterful serve, Rhonda Rogers' skillful spike, and Coach Burno's cries of, Let me have some balls! urged the girls on to the sectional championships. This year's team was the first in WPHS history to achieve such status. Junior Varsity 89 % 1' V V V. % V ••. . '• ■. V : .' • .'V . • - . . S’? The valiant efforts of the team said much for the caliber of the players, and were a source of much pride for the High School. While the team got off to a slow start, momentum built and spirit in- creased as the season progressed. With the en- couragement of the cheerleaders, the hoopsters were incomparable. Boys' Swimming A combination of experienced and new swimmers has made the boys’ swim team a raring-to-go group. The good performances turned out at the meets surprised everyone, including Coach Linnell. Of course, with people like Steve Roney leading in the 100-meter breast stroke, and John Vrooman taking away the 100-meter fly and back stroke, what else could be expected? All twenty-six teammates can be proud of the hard work that has produced a glowing record. 96 Varsity A Winning Season! Those three words tell it all. This year's Lady Cagers really proved their worth as they worked their way up to the sec- tionals with the help of several win- ning streaks. But whether they won or lost, the Lady Cagers consistently demonstrated style, sportsmanship and Tiger toughness! Girls' Basketball Gymnastics Whether on or off the floor, the Gymnastics Team rarely stumbled; and this year they developed into quite a good squad. Tammy Kaminer and Sue Russo, team captains, led the way with excellent performances; and Patty Rohr and Janet Weiner made important contributions to the Tumblers. Throughout the diverse events could be found precision, tal- ent and grace. The end result — proud Tiger fans! Ice Hockey There's no doubt about it! The varsity hockey team had a successful season. Despite losing the first few games of the season, the team skated to a six-game winning streak by mid- season with the help of Coach George Grimes and Tom Palombo. Captain Tony Bettino and alternate captains Rich Blaney and Clark Douglas provided unity — a key ingredient for Tiger success. Among encouraging yells from team members were cries of, Isurrender, ref! and, “I could have been at a Ranger game tonight! Despite questionable calls and high pressure plays, the Tigers always pulled through. Indoor Track While most of us were freezing during the winter of '82, the In- door Track teams were making it very warm for the opposition. This year's teams placed well in nearly all the meets they entered, with the help of Steve Ranger, Greg Moore and Kevin Donnelly for the guys and Nina Braslow, Audrey Rogers and Caroline Cardon for the girls. Apparently all those af- ternoons spent running around C-Building paid off, as the Harriers brought home victories and broke league records. So next time six guys come barreling down the hallway don't get mad, cheer them on! 105 Wrestling 106 To some a mat is a place to rest; but to the White Plains High School wrestling team, the mat is a battle zone. The team was led by seniors Kendall Rogers, Wayne Anderson, Brian Bean” Reid, and junior Bryant Holloway. With the help of Coach George Perry, the Tigers pinned down an impressive record for the 1981-82 season. mm v- t§m m ■. '■ um ?• ii:r mm mmmm i m m i •■ 1 KMpte aflE«SffiSaW Snrine HQ . With returning seniors Frank Fraioli, Orazio Ciglio, Larry Cleit, and lose Lugo, and a large junior lineup, the team was well prepared for a successful season of America's favorite sport. Boys' Tennis - Concentration. The toss. A loud ping! breaks the silence as the boys' tennis team serves up another strong season. Returning seniors Roger Klepper, Mark Itzler, and 1981 Section I doubles player Chip Williams were joined by several ex- perienced juniors to make up a competitive team. Al- though they faced tough competition from rivals Scarsdale and Mamaroneck, Coach jerry Gorski was con- fident the Tigers would net another winning year. Co-Captains Cassandra Ford and Sue Dolan worked with an energetic and spirited team this year. Much of the team's power was due to the expert playing of Blanca Gama and Sue. The girls showed much potential for the future, because of the ever-increasing skills of team members such as Kelly Kraak and Elisa Murphy. The end of this season marked the end of the high school soccer careers of seniors Eve Tursky and Cassandra. While these two experienced players will be sorely missed, the team still looks forward to a promising season next year. 117 118 Lacrosse The 1982 Lacrosse team looks to be in tip-top shape this year thanks to winter Nautilus train- ing and intramutal competition. Senior captains Jim Barber and Jim Donahoe will lead the de- fense and offense, respectively. Pete Westerholm, Les Hack- meyer, John Wollmann, Tony Bettino and goalie Carlton Jack- son round out the list of superb senior laxman. With a line-up like that, there's no way the laxman can lose! 119 The WPHS boys' outdoor track team has been very successful in the past few years, and Co-Captains Greg Moore and Steve Ranger worked hard this year to uphold the tradition. Seniors Kevin Donnelly and Dave Fabel ran their hardest to overtake the opposition. Meanwhile, Jemuel Abraham, James Buchanan, Bryant Hill, Norman Price, and Brad Sch- neider represented WPHS in the field events. The girls' team was a young, but highly motivated squad. The team's only senior, Caroline Cardon, tram- pled the competition in the 100m and 400m hurdles. Sophomore Nina Bras- low distinguished herself as a very capable distance runner. WPHS has good reason to be proud of its outdoor track team. 121 Girls' Softball SOFTBALL — a game where each of the players has a specific position to play. Not so with this high school's di- verse team. Each of the team's players is skilled in several playing positions. Led by team captains Monica Fraioli and Lynette Bailey, this year's squad is planning on making that diversity pay off — with a winning season! GOLF Leading the way to a more balanced golf team this year are veteran seniors Steve Frank and Mike Rattner and dynamic sophomore Don Edwards. Despite the loss of several key players to last year's graduating class, the golf team shows a strong chance of bettering last year's record. With the added help of seniors Andy Bauman and Max King it looks as though the '82 golf- ers will have another great season. Mr. Bender served in our school system for over twenty years. Last year we shared his mixed feelings about retirement — regret at his leaving our community, and happiness at the relaxation retirement would bring him. This year we share his family's sorrow at their loss. Mark Dolinsky, a member of the sophomore class, was active in many phases of student life. His participation in hockey, tennis, and band made him known and beloved to many at White Plains High. Both Mr. Bender and Mark were valued members of the community and of the high school. Their friendship will be missed by all who knew them. • Mm m m iAUU y |ri rrrAc mn m' n HAPPENINGS The hours between 7:45 and 2:30 are spent in an endless number of ways, and for most of the year they are spent at good old White Plains High School. As any student will tes- tify, a freshman often wonders how he gets so many minutes between his classes; a senior often wonders how he gets so much class between his minutes. Either way, the final bell seems like it will never ring, so everyone develops his own way to occupy the time. The arts, activities and clubs are as diverse as the people involved with them, ranging from throwing clay and rolling tires to playing administrator. On occasion, some of us even study; but one of the most popular activities is avoiding that activity! INDEX ser, 5. Bravo, A. Brinson, P. Brooks, U. White. 191 This year was one of new beginnings for White Plains High School as Dr. Jerry Marcus became the new superintendent of schools, AP Biology was approved for next year's curriculum, and a group of WPHS students participated in our first exchange program to Venezuela. Of course, the most important change for any senior was the introduction of Economics as a required course. As we concentrated on our new beginnings, the rest of the world was concerned with new developments in old situations. The aftermath of the baseball strike created a second baseball season, affording at least partial satisfaction to disappointed fans. Budget Director David Stockman temporarily brought classical litera- ture back into vogue by comparing highly controver- sial Reaganomics to the Trojan horse. His off the record remarks caused a furor throughout the coun- try. A more welcome commotion occurred with the announcement from England that lovely Princess Diana was an expectant mother. The ongoing Middle East conflict saw a shocking new development as Egypt's Anwar el Sadat was assassinated while review- ing Egyptian troops. Europe, too, saw the decline of a the Lost Ark, love and revolution in Reds, and intoxicating comedy in Arthur. Forthose interested in higher culture, Franco Zef- ferelli created a breathtaking new La Boheme at the Met. For the wealthy there were eight-hour performances of Nicholas Nickelby for $100 per ticket. The more budget-conscious student spent hours with his Rubik's Cube, or a few quarters on Pac- Man. No matter their cost, though, all of this year's memories are priceless. major political leader as Poland's Lech Walesa and his Solidarity union were suppressed by General Jaruzelski's martial law. Despite the serious goings on all over the world, we all found time to relax and enjoy ourselves. Whether our feet were clad in metallic flats, docksiders, or Nikes and shoelaces with multicolored stars, we tapped our toes to music like Centerfold bytheJ.GeilsBand, Can't Go For That by Hall and Oates, or Let's Groove by Earth, Wind and Fire. Live concerts brought such groups as the Rolling Stones, Genesis, and a temporarily reunited Simon and Garfunkel within our reach. For four dollars, the movies provided us with gripping adventure in Raiders of Outs And where were our “outs — our hangouts, munchouts, and occa- sional freakouts? Where did we go when the last bell rang, when we put down our books with a sigh of relief? Whether to a woods party, a disco, a bar, or (for those of us who couldn't resist the temptation) to the library, we went out in the highest spirit of phaloogamy. We graced the stores of the Galleria, munched at delis, and pizza parlors, and went to football victory parties. We even found time out in school. The bathrooms, the wall, or the lawn, provided us with the setting; and our friends provided us with the company. Wherever we went, we always found a way out.” 194 . . . There is very little difference between one man and another; but what little there is, is very important . . — William lames Special Thanks to: David Vaughn Sue at Davis John Lancelli Cover Design by Melanie Glashow 199 Yesterday is History, 'Tis so far away — Yesterday is Poetry — Tis Philosophy — Yesterday is mystery — Where it is Today While we shrewdly speculate Flutter both away. — Emily Dickinson
