The M Division operates the muscles of the ship: the steam turbines and associated equipment. Besides keeping the ship moving. M Division men operate and maintain the distilling plants. the ship's generators. and the main ballast pumps. The M division men stand watches in the engine rooms. spaces not quite as hot as the firerooms. the temperatures often being as low as IZOO. Under the eagle eye of the otlicer of the watch. the M Division stands a three- section watch underway. consisting of four men in each engine room. The throttleman maintains the exact speed of the ship as ordered by the Officer of the Deck on the bridge. But his responsibility goes far beyond this. He must keep a constant eye on a mass of gauges which give an overall picture of the functioning of the entire engineering plant. Down in the bowels of the engine room the lower level man keeps a watch on the main lubricating oil pumps. supplying oil under pressure to all main turbine and main reduction gear bearings. The messenger takes pressure and temperature readings. sounds the feed-water tanks and keeps the coffee a-making. Our never-failing supply of fresh water is the result of M Division work. main- taining and operating the distilling plants. . I As Jan Conover maintains, the ballast pumps are part ofthe shtp's mam battery. He and other MM's keep these huge pumps in running order.
