1. Pg, Left to Right: Bosun E, E. Marshall. R.V. Ingram BMI, H. E. Rowe BMI and R. A. Phillips BMC. DECK DIVISIO The oldest rate in the Navy. and the highest ranking rate. is that of Boatswain's Mate. Our BM's make up the lirst and second divisions. the lirst division being deploy- ed over thc forward part of the ship. the second division being assigned the rear half. The Deck Apes. as they are fondly called. are the Whetstone's real sailors. They are involved with the most traditional Navy chores of keeping the ship clean, running the boats. handling lines and controlling docking and anchoring. A Everyone knows what the Boatswain's Mate of the watch does: he gets us up. the morning. sends us to chow. puts us to work. calls us a liberty boat. and putsius to bed. The routine of Navy life is set to the shrill blasts of the Boatswain's pipe. At GQ the deck force mans our guns. and at condition 1 Able, when we per- form the functions for which our ship was designed. they are in charge of loading and offioading boats. troops and vehicles of war. ' Known as one of the cleanest ships in the fieet. the Whetstone owes its reputa- tion to the constant efforts of the deck force and their able leaders. Two of these leaders. H.T. Baker and H. E. Rowe. are the last remaining Hplank ownersi' on the crew.
