Y 1937-38 Holding the annual junior- senior prom was the great- est event for the class of '39 as juniors, headed by small but very brilliant Henry Schrebe. During the year members won honors in the Helds of journalism, club activities, scholarship. and student government. The junior girls were crowned inter-class basket- ball champs and the junior class figured prominently in helping make Student Day a success. N H CHU L One ofthe novel dances of the year was given by the junior class. In conjunction with the basketball dance, the Junior Hop was held in the school gymnasium with the Blues Rhythm orchestra playing for the dancing. Besides participating in social events, the juniors had to work diligently to finance the prom. Junior girls sold candy at basketball games, and many other ac- tivities Were launched to help build up the prom fund. DECUDD

1939 1935-36 This was the freshman year of the class of '39. Although termed greenies its members led the honor roll of the school for two six Weeks' periods, placing 40 on the list of honor students. The class had no organization, yet it was outstanding in both inter-class athletics and social activi- ties. EI2lf'l HAT If DIE l936-37 Pls sophomores, the class of 1939 chose beauteous and smart Martha Stewart as president. In this second year, the class distinguished itself by leading the school With top scholastic honors and by the presentation of several novelty dances.

1938-39 The senior class, under pretty, energetic, popular Betty Banta, held a distinct honor in being the largest class in the history of Wheeling high school, with 275 students. Highlights of the year were the presen- tation of the senior musical comedy, under the direction of Miss Bertha Marie Dwinnell, the inauguration of one of the WHS's great-A est student governments, the recognition of the school paper in the state HEIQE I WHAT DID contest and the organization of Wheeling high's Debate Club by a group of senior boys. Individual honors were handed Eleanore Gilmore as state reporter of the Home Economics Club, Eleanor Lude- wig as state president of Home Economics Club, Caroline Nestmann, who had the highest average among Wheeling high's senior enrollment of 275 students, and Betty Banta as Wheeling High Schools Best Citizen. All these made this year the greatest in the high school career of the class of 1939.
