Va. i- Ellie ilirrnrh Zlinremnrh HE Seniors of 1931 found that the only possible way of producing a year book in this year of depression was by financing it themselves, without the support of generous mer- chants. The class mer the challenge wich a spirited interest that resulted in a book which it believes superior to all those that precede it. Since every page, every picture in the book has been paid for by the students, the whole school has helped share the responsibility of the Annual. The theme, the Gay Nineties, was chosen because the editors of the book, working on a new plan, felt particularly near to the independent lilteraleurs of the Nineties who pro- duced in 1897, the first copy of The Record. HoLnsN Basketball Girls' Intramurals Track Swimming 52 Ellie ilirrnrh Football THE opening of the 1930 football season found Wheeling supporters anxious to see what kind of a football team Coach Smith would turn out in his first season as head coach. He was faced with the task of molding a team from a squad of inexperienced men. The first game did not entirely satisfy the fans, but the second game, a 31-6 walkaway, was enough to satisfy even the most skeptical. Wheeling walked through the hrs: four games without much trouble, but tested the bitter dregs of defeat in the next two games, both games being lost to downstate teams. The Gold gridders made a strong comeback in the Linsly game, and this 31-0 victory was the highlight of the entire season. The 13-6 triumph over Parkersburg was the most exciting game of the entire season, victory being achieved in the last few minutes of play. The annual Turkey Day game with Bellaire resulted in a 0-0 tie, which left both elevens tied for the valley title. This was followed with a post-season game with Martins Ferry for the benefit of charity in both towns, and Wheeling went clown before the rush of the Ohioans, 13-6. 53 is w g SM 'he 1Kernrh Ohio Valley A. A. Co-Champions Capt. Herbert Stewart led the Gold and Blue through a good season, and also achieved for himself the enviable honor of earning a position on both the All-Valley and All-State teams. Hubert Rinehart played a guard position alongside Capt. Stewart, and the two formed an almost impenetrable center wall. Rinehart also made the All-Valley team. Thomas Carnahan, popularly knovfn as Red , was the other guard who made the center of the Wheeling forward wall like a stone abutment. Harald Grubb was developed from second string material to one of the best tackles Wheeling High has ever had. Grubb was especially proicient in getting down the field to cover the Wheeling punts. Dan Snyder was a powerful figure on the line despite his weight of 148 pounds. Snyder has another year to serve Wheelmg High. William Lewis saw enough service to help Wheeling to victory in several games. Sam Mason was a regular figure in the starting lineup, and his all-around play made him a valuable player. It was his pass-receiving that won the game at Morgantown. Edwin Berger did not begin ro get steady work until about the middle of the season. His good work in the Huntington game impressed Coach Smith and he was in the rest of the contests. Harry Bell was another terminal who was an all-around player, and helped the Gold on the road to success. Bernard Polirkey was the fourth end to earn a letter, and since he is to be back for another year is expected to be good material. john Mekos was ranked by a Charleston sports writer as the best quarter i.n the Big Four, and also as the best passer in the state. He ran the team like a college veteran and was the brains of the backfield. Henry Goldberg, last of a long line of famous brothers, was noted for his speed in running in a broken iield. Paul McCu.rkey was another speed merchant. He played his best game against Parkersburg, the school he attended before coming to Wheeling High. Q Charles Carroll played his second year as halfback, but after the middle of the season was held out because of injuries. Captain-Elect LaBay was the big man in the backfield who could always be depended upon for two or three yards, and is expected to be a great leader next year. Edward Beilvl did not see much service but is expected to be outstanding next year. 54 1950 g l gg gi Ellie 1Krrm'h Season's Highlights FOLLANSBEE: Wheeling's first game, a 14-0 victory over the Blue and White of Follansbee, gave Wheelingites their first view of the 1930 eleven. The game's feature was the great showing of Jaclt LaBay at his new position of fullback. MORGANTOWN: Coach Smith's charges journeyed to the University City to meet the strong Clydemen. Morgantown had run up big scores over two strong teams already, and the Gold wasn't given much of a chance to beat the Morgantown eleven. Morgantown had not reckoned on Wheeling's hne passing, and Meltos' pass to Mason in the second quarter won the game 7-0. HUNTINGTON: Hul Slutz's Pony Express was expected to give the Gold and Blue a stir? fight, but pulled a surprise and ran the Wheeling ends ragged to win the game by a 14-0 margin. LINSLY: The annual battle between Linsly Institute and Wheeling High was expected to be another stiff fight, but Linsly got the surprise of its life. On the first play, Henry Goldberg cut through tackle for 55 yards and a touchdown. After this first play, the game was a cake- wallc for Wheeling and the Soldiers came out on the short end of a 31-0 score. PARKERSBURG: The 'iBig Reds of Parkersburg came to Wheeling with about 1,800 rooters and their 72-piece band, determined to hear Wheeling. After a big parade in the morning, the crowd journeyed to the stadium, and saw the two elevens battle. Wheeling drew first blood, and was leading 6-0 at the half. Parkersburg came baclcin the third quarter and with about three minutes to play, had a 7-6 margin. Once again Henry Goldberg pulled the game out of the fire by intercepting a pass and scoring the touchdown that won the game 13-6. MARTINS FERRY: After Wheeling had finished its regular schedule, civic organizations of both towns arranged for a game between Martins Ferry H.igh and Wheeling High for the beneht of charity in Wheeling and Martins Ferry. The Gold arid Blue forward wall could not withstand thc rushes of the Ferry star, Dorsey, and was crushed 13-6. The Gold's big threat, LaBay, was almost stopped in his tracks. 56 I he liernrh n'nma.,, unm,.ni I.:-in.,-, ii'i1a,.., learn-mfr, xi-ri.-num, wr.-rr mir-ti Ymilh, xl.-lr.-e, 'I'u1:mI1, mimi Kraus, xnnmevr- mn.- Basketball 1930-1931 With a veteran team back, the same team that won the sectional tourney last year, Wheeling High looked forward to a good basketball season, The team lived up to all ex- pectations and won the annual sectional tournament for the hfth consecutive season. The annual warm-up game with the Alumni, resulted in defeat for the regulars, but from there on, the Gold cagers went through one of the best seasons ever experiencd in the high school. The highlights of the schedule were two triumphs over Linsly, a clean sweep of the two games on the downstate trip, and the climax, the sectional championship. Both games played with the Linsly Cadets were won by a five-point margin. The score of the first was 34-29 and the second was even larger, 48-43. The game with Warwood following the second Linsly game closed the regular season for Wheeling with a record of 15 con- secutive victories. Four more triumphs in the sectional tourney ran the string to 19. For the second con- secutive year, Sam Norteman and Hubert Rinehart were chosen for the All-Tournament team. At the state tournament, Wheeling coasted through its first game, against Montgomery, to win by a 23-15 margin. ln their second game, Wheeling met Huntington, who defeated the Gold 27-16. Huntington went on to win the state basketball championship for 1931, and tool: two honors for the 1930-1931 season, having won the state football championship. 57 Ellie Eerurh Basketball 1930-1931 RECORDS: City Championship Ohio Valley A. Dowling, physical education director, and Miss Elizabeth Steinbiclcer, girls' coach and director, be adopted as the plan for girls' basketball for the ensuing years. The main reason for this is that more interest has been developed among the girls, since 175 have been given the opportunity to compete, while in former years only 20 girls composed the varsity squad. An intensive program was planned by the G. A. C. under the sponsorship of Miss Stein- biclcer. Every effort was made to plan the teams for each class so as not to make it a one- sided affair. The home room system, whereby reams were composed of all the girls in the chapel section who were interested in basketball, proved the most satisfactory. Out of the Senior sections two teams cntercdg juniors, two, and Sophomores, four. A Freshman league was also organized in order to give the Freshmen experience in com- petitive baslretball. There were seven teams in this league. A Senior team, composed of Gladys Hamlin fCapt.j, Margaret McGill, Helen Mae Irby, Louise Kertz, Betty Gardner and Frances Kopp was the only undefeated group in the upper class league. Helen Bippus fCapt.l, Bertha Armbrust, Ann Wenzel, Edna Shelden, Rhea Brasch, Ethel Mae Crock, Amelia Wurnbacker and Dorothy Barber formed the un- defeated team in the Freshman league. This intramural tournament was cliniaxed by a class tournament with the Seniors again victorious. The Seniors carried the lead in class standing with a clean slateg the Sophomores were next, their only foe being the Seniors, the Juniors, having lost to both Sophomores and Seniors, came third. Coach Phipps had a few iettcrmen only to form the nucleus of his team. In the first meet, the Gold and Blue rraclcsters were nor very successful, having to be content with third place. From there on, the Wheeling team enjoyed fair success, but the crowning success came in the annual sectional meet. Wheeling walked off with this, having a 17 point margin over the nearest team, Triadelphia. In the state meer held at Morgantown, Oak Hill took Ht-st place, but Wheeling had one man tie for the Hrst in the high jump, and one man take fourth in the 440-yard dash. Stumpp tied for first in the high jump, and Sayles took fourth place in the 440. In the Pittsburgh invitation meet, held in the Pitt stadium, Wheeling placed :wo men, both in the high hurdles. Berger took third place, and was followed to the tape by Henry Goldberg, who took fourth place. In the annual Wheelmg Intelligencer invitation meet, Parkersburg High School came up from Wood County, and gathered enough points to take the trophy hack home. Wheeling had such stiff opposition that the best that it could do was to capture fifth place. Among the lettermen left for the 1931 season are: Tuttle, McCuskey, Suchy, Martin, Vlahos, Sttauch, LaBay. 62 Q Fenzzfzzrey lf lin lilly. llfi'fl'fl lillwnhli, l'ullx'l'. llvL'l1'mly. Frnlll, Kimr. Ellie llrrurh Senior Class Play l'Merely Mary Ann, a romantic comedy, by Israel Zangwill, was presented by the Senior class of 1931 on April 30 and May 1. Under the careful directorship of Miss Elisabeth Linsz, head of the Dramarics department, Merely Mary Ann was successfully staged. Helen Bieberson portrayed, beautifully, the role of Mary Ann, a naive servant girl, while Jarrles Seaman played the part of Lancelot, the leading male role, superbly. Eva Nat- terson and George Johnson had prominent character parts, which added much humor to the presentation. The cast of Merely Mary Ann included Kay Morgan, as Mrs. Leadbatterg Kenneth Cunningham, as Herr Brahmsong Carl Kerr, Reverend Samuel Smedgeg Robert Moore, O'Gor- mang Chester Curbing jim Blaydesg Nancy Dunlap and Mary Hannah Nesbitt, the Sisters Trippetg Anna Louise Wilkinson and Jacqueline Front, Lady Chelmet and Caroline, Codntess of Foxwellg Mildred Stobbs, the Honorable Mrs. Fritzgeorge, Frances Kopp, Lady Glynn, Margaret McGill, Lady Gladys Valentine: Kathryn Seabright, Bowena Fritzgeorgeg Leslie Teater, Lord Valentineg butler, jack Knowles. Dramatics Department The Speech Arts department, under the direction of Miss Elisabeth Linsz, presented many interesting chapel programs throughout the year, the outstanding ones being an Armis- tice day program, which revealed the heroes and heroines from the beginning of time, and the Christmas play No Room At the Inn, the story of a lowly Bethlehem home of two thousand years ago. No Room Ar the Inn had for its plot the story of a young jewish girl who found it difliculr to make a lamp, but its light finally led her to the manger of the Christ Child. Leading roles were portrayed hy Margaret McGill, Katherine Morgan, Robert Tuttle, and Roy Reuther, all of whom are members of the Senior class. Other Seniors participating were Edith Henrhorn, Anna Louise Wilkinson, Kathryn Seabright, Sara Brandfass, Virginia Ewing, Anne Henthorn, Marjorie Bowman, Thelma Burgess, Nancy Dunlap, James Seaman, and Loyal Simms. 66 Elie Qlrrurh MEMBERS OF 1931 BAND r, mio-f r:.iw..r.us, .ln-t-1-t--rg iz-rg--vw nm.-sn, nlrum mn.-r. The Music Department The band is an outstanding organization, sponsored by the Music department. For the first time, it was dnrered in the state contest for high school bands, held at Charleston. F. Oliver Edwards was chairman of contest arrangements. One of the important events of the year in which members of the band, glee clubs and orchestra participated, was the annual minsrrel show, with Robert Tuttle as intcrlocutor. Many concerts were given by the band during the year, the proceeds of which helped defray the expenses of the trip to Charleston. Generous Boosters-most of whom are former Wheeling High School students- donated new uniforms to the band this year, and the natty blue suits, trimmed in gold, malce the organization the finest loolting in the valley.
