The first year of high school, the freshmen agree, is as big and exciting a change as the change from grade school to junior high. For one thing, this is the first year electives are of- fered -- no more science unless you want it lany budding Einsteins in the crowd?l, and a chance not only to try your hand at higher mathematics, but also to break the language barrier and begin to study any one of three languages - Latin, French, or Spanish. Of course, there are still must subjects. Who can avoid English, with its first taste of that perpetual wanderer Ulysses, whose wonderings are immortalized in Homer's Odyssey? Civics is also essential to every freshman's curriculum -- here the frosh learn what to expect in their later lives as adult American citizens. In fact, the whole of the freshman year is a training ground for the years that follow, not only in high school and college, but in the out- side world once school is left behind. ln this year the somewhat timid student is inducted into making his own decisions and reaping the cir- cumstances. He learns to do his best in his chosen field, for the ninth grade is the beginning of that period honored with such close scrutiny by colleges and prospective employers. ln short, this is the first year of school that counts, even though each preceding year has prepared the student for it, this, the freshman year, is the initial step toward adulthood. 52 Ninth Grade English classes read in the library for both recreational reading and for the re- quired book reports. ln the foreground are D. Berry, A. Brodsky, C. Greenspan, K. William- son, and J. Ott.
