Yet any student who spends his high-school years in a new school with no past history, and for that reason, no traditions, need not feel that he is missing out. Indeed, he should feel that he has been offered a marvelous opportunity - an opportunity to BUILD traditions. Wheaton is a new school - itvhas been established for only three years. Wheaton students are therefore among the lucky ones who are the builders of traditions. Wheaton is what WE make it, might well be the motto of these students. T The first graduating class left its mark on Wheaton last year, a mark of which they can be proud. Yet, the members of this year's Senior Class by no means followed ay well-beaten path which had been worn by many feet. Instead, they had a chance to strike out on their own, to establish new precedents, to lay the foundations of NEW traditions. This was true, in fact, of every class. All were therefore pathfinders. E , The LANCE has tried to catch the active, building spirit of Wheaton in the following pages. We hope we have succeeded: ff w XX.. Although he cannot, of course, be known per- sonally by all of the student body, his influence is felt in all parts of school life. Executive Reins Were in Capable Hands Miss Henrietta Baker has been vice-princi- pal at Wheaton since its first year. Miss Baker, who is well known by faculty and students alike, is responsible for the weekly assemblies and the daily P.A. announce- ments which are an integral part of school life. 4 Mr. William Gruver, Wheaton's new vice- principal, has had the momentous job of handling student-teacher-parent relation- ships, and he has shown himself to have all of the necessary qualifications. He has also the less arduous but equally time- consuming job of supervising attendance. ,vs-Q, Acting as school secretary is often more than a little got to see Mr. Mason! in your earl The four secretaries Morgan, and Mary Lou Lamb, bore up splendidly, however The Counselors Were Helpful, The Secretaries, Capable 'T'-al unnerving. Imagine trying to type while a student yelled l've , from left to right, Ruth Woodling, Margaret Buehrle, Mildred - with a minimum of nervous breakdowns! 40 ,g,, Wheaton shares Katherine Greany with Colonel Belt Junior High. Miss Greany divides her time between Wheaton and Belt, acting as General Supervisor at both schools. A counselor is a special person - a sympathetic guide who provides light for uncertain feet, and help for bewildered minds. Wheaton's three counselors were every bit as special as could be de- sired. Found at their desks are: Margaret Griffin, upper left, Harold Horn, lower left, and Carl Mitchell, below. 9 'R can ti 2 ,J '1- up .91 Q fc: W 'sf -- if vga' Qi . 44 N K ' CZ 'ix 2' fi is ' NNY 'll ,W r . -if -11 sa, 1 I.i ' F C J Z U JU If 1: T71 70 I 0 o o. o 'G ffl J 'fl G. :- U fb v r' m J Q 5. gr T1 'l 0 3 3 X 0 4 Q c U ln C uw P Z E r' rn -4 YT! 3 'Q G. Zcfi , .N The members of the graduating class of l957 all agree on one thing: their Senior Year was the busiest and happiest year of their lives. First, they held their Senior Play, One Wild Night, Directed by Miss Margaret O'Brien, the play was the joint effort of a group of Seniors who deserved all the applause they re- ceived. Next on the calendar was the Christmas Ball, a semi-formal dance, held by the Senior Class for the entire senior high school. Another never-to-be-forgotten event was Senior Day. All agreed that it felt wonderful to sub for their teachers, if only the teachers had completed the picture by becoming students for a day l Those who went on the Senior Trip to New York considered it one of the year's highlights. Thanks go to Mr. Pascal Emma, who put up with all fifty innocents abroad for three whole days. KThough the Seniors sometimes suspected that he was having as much fun as they werell The Senior Prom was a much-anticipated event which fulfilled every expectation. The Seniors and their dates could have danced all night - and some of them did! Graduation marked the end of a perfect year. The Seniors leave Wheaton with the hope that it is a little the better because of them, as they certainly are because of it. KNIOR CLASS OFFICERS AND SPONSOR Seated: S. Hurvitz, A. Plaia, D. Bell, L. H' 'fo' yr-' a't: The Band shows fine form in the Silver Spring Christmas Parade. Displaying re- sults of the rigorous training of Mr. Fred Felmet, their capable sponsor. The Drill Team also bravely turned out on the chilly day of the parade. Their pep reflected the well-known Wheaton spirit. The first year of high school, the freshmen agree, is as big and exciting a change as the change from grade school to junior high. For one thing, this is the first year electives are of- fered -- no more science unless you want it lany budding Einsteins in the crowd?l, and a chance not only to try your hand at higher mathematics, but also to break the language barrier and begin to study any one of three languages - Latin, French, or Spanish. Of course, there are still must subjects. Who can avoid English, with its first taste of that perpetual wanderer Ulysses, whose wonderings are immortalized in Homer's Odyssey? Civics is also essential to every freshman's curriculum -- here the frosh learn what to expect in their later lives as adult American citizens. In fact, the whole of the freshman year is a training ground for the years that follow, not only in high school and college, but in the out- side world once school is left behind. ln this year the somewhat timid student is inducted into making his own decisions and reaping the cir- cumstances. He learns to do his best in his chosen field, for the ninth grade is the beginning of that period honored with such close scrutiny by colleges and prospective employers. ln short, this is the first year of school that counts, even though each preceding year has prepared the student for it, this, the freshman year, is the initial step toward adulthood. 52 Ninth Grade English classes read in the library for both recreational reading and for the re- quired book reports. ln the foreground are D. This ls Student Government at Its Best The essence of Student Government lies in the cultivating of the correct attitudes in the minds of the students. Thus the Student Coun- cil is not only a tool and a voice, but it is also a vital part of education. The Council is the proving ground for the principles learned in civics classes - by learning how to govern themselves through a representative body, the students are preparing themselves for their fu- tures as active, well-informed American citi- zens. This year the Student Council cooperated with students and the Administration to formu- late a well-rounded program of drives, assem- blies, and dances which pleased everyone. , - el A -, I iq S . ,Q ' y N , , Y' . While the Chorus Sang, the Band Played on The first of Wheaton's six singing groups, directed by Mrs. Pauline Holcomb, is the Junior High Chorus. The main purpose of this begin- ners' chorus is to teach eighth and ninth grade students the fundamentals of music, but the group of 94 also entertains. The Tenth Grade Chorus, with a membership of 55, is one more step up the musical ladder, the group's biggest singing date this year was the Senior Graduation in spring. Last, but by no means the least of this musical triumvirate, is the Senior Chorus, of group of 67, which sings at many programs, both in and out of school. The Girls Glee Club supplements the choruses at assemblies. There are 48 girls in the Club, which is actually a class, as are the three choruses. The Knightingales and the Singing Knights are both extra-curricular activities. The 30 boys of the Singing Knights say they sing for fun and relaxation, but they also entertain at school assemblies. The six Knightingales tall girlsl sang at various school affairs during the year, but their big date was at the Kiwanis Convention in Atlantic City this spring. The music department boasts four instrumen- tal organizations, each of which is an integral part of school life. The Orchestra, consisting of 28 musically tal- ented boys and girls and directed by Mr. Fred Felmet, is not only a class but also a performing group. This year, the Orchestra played at the Honor Society Induction, and at the Senior Grad- l3Ulif0llS uation, the group also participated in the Spring Concert where honors were shared with the Band The Band, a group of 75, is also a class and also performs, under the direction of Mr. Felmet The most important function of this organiza tion is to play at football games - a function which it fills admirably. This fall, the members performed bravely and sharply in all weather, adding a great deal to the spirit of the observers The Band also marched in parades, performed at assemblies, and, of course, played at the annual Spring Concert The Dance Band, which is sponsored by Mr Carl Mitchell, is a group of ll who, as the name suggests, play at local and school dances. This year, the Band, which is also known as The Regents, played at Wheaton's Bonfire Bop and at the Faculty Sway, in addition to playing at local affairs The Pep Band, sponsored by Mr. Felmet, con sists of l5 members tall boysi, and is always available to stir up spirit for any worthy school cause. ln the past year the Band s most notable performances have been at pep assemblies, at the fall Bonfire, and as the avant-garde of the Lance's publicity committee. ,foto .
