Forever Presen t, Forever The Same Cramming At one time or another every student has experienced that strange sensation in the bottom of the stomach as you sit down to study with the realization that you have a test the next day that you know virtually nothing about. No matter how often this situation has occurred, this test inevitably is the most important of your life. It is for this reason and this reason alone that you trade M 'A S 'H for a doodled notebook, a well worn peechee and a three- hundred pound book you've yet to open and convince yourself you are now going to cram. Yet, your mind becomes a steel trap, which is unfortunately shut. The words, that when read singularly made so much sense, become an unintelligible jumble of syllables when forced into sentences and para- graphs. Then the phone rings, you need a drink of water, the dog wants out, a Hostess Twinkie is calling you, you suddenly remember to take out the trash, your back gets a kink, your pencil breaks, you get a headache and have to go to the bathroom all at once. However the diligent student in you finally assumes control and fully armed with a fresh pot of coffee you finally settle down to study. You sink into your books and start absorbing the totally consequential information it contains. The once incomprehensible words flow smoothly into your memory Cor onto your crib sheetj and the real world slowly fades away. The cramming process is in full swing now. The same information has circles through your mind countless times and now if you can just keep it in a holding pattern until tomorrow's test. You have been almost done for four hours. Your eyes can no longer read the clock, not to mention the book. Your hands decide of their own accord that you are finished. The book closes, your feet throw you onto the bed and without another thought you fall fast asleep until the unbearable alarm sounds the next morning. The best thing about cramming is that when you flunk the test the next day, you are so tired you don't even care.
