Text from Pages 1 - 248 of the 1978 volume:

Weymouth North and Weymouth Vocational Technical High Schools 1978 Remember . . . The first day of school. Cinderella dresses, patent leather shoes, Whiffle hair-cuts, and miniature bow ties Replaced tattered sneakers and shorts of yesterday. You were so brave, As long as your mother ' s hand held yours tightly. The brick building looked so big And just a bit frightening. You wanted to cry, But cookies and milk Stifled your fears. Suddenly you were reading About Spot, Dick, and Jane. Remember . . . How confused you were in junior high? Program cards were as foreign as French. Although you could never use your locker, You still manged to lose that lock. No one knew what the word detention meant, But everyone found out sooner or later. Organized sports were introduced, And many became dedicated Jocks . Others discovered the charm of the library. Common manners were tossed aside, As were the vegetables in the cafeteria. Didn ' t you feel stylish in those stiff, new Levi ' s And equally uncomfortable in your baggy gym appar You couldn ' t conquer algebra, But quickly learned to camouflage cigarette breathe The hours spent worrying about the ninth grade Prom Seem foolish when you look back in time. Remember . . . We are now in the prime of our lives , As adults so often remind us. These are the years we will remember most. Why not reminisce now? 7 TABLE OF CONTENTS ntroduction 1-16 W.N.H.S. As sophomores we immediately adapted to the new environment of high school. It was different having permission to smoke at lunch, and there were many science and foreign language labs in which to experiment. Soon we were accustomed to the familiar buzz of the fire alarms. As juniors we became card sharks thanks to Monte Carlo Night, and we learned all about Broadway through our own hit, The Gong Show. We sat in darkness for five periods and ate cold lettuce sandwiches during the Blackout. Our junior year ended with a new attendance policy which was cast aside until September. Our last year opened with several surprises. Little did we know that our first concert would be our last, and we had no idea that the attendance policy would lead to the Walkout. On our first day of gym we were astounded to have Human Sexuality and Social I Responsibilities thrown in our faces. Many kids were having fun under the overhang, planning parties at Whiskey Point, The Pits, and Emery ' s. Many of us stopped eating junk food to keep the blemishes from spoiling our senior portraits, but worrying about SAT ' s didn ' t help matters. Then we decided to raise money by selling chocolate bars, and we were our own best customers! Our complexions mirrored our financial success. The only solution was to purchase Weymouth North ski hats, pull them down over our faces, and hide all together. We will never forget our senior class play, Anything Goes, because it wasn ' t the only thing going ... so was Mr. Kearns. His leaving was almost like canceling The Johnny Carson Show. All of these experiences allow the members of the class of 1978 to be individual shining stars. To make us a most unique group we have decided to let ... the last be first and the first be last ... 19 Tina M. Russo Honest, it ' s not my handbag! Brien S. Myers Kevin E. Murray Elizabeth M. Some of us may groan at the mention of the word, teacher, but as we reflect upon our school years we realize that they weren ' t so bad after all. Although we seldom admit it, we do appreciate the teachers and all the work they have done for us. Many teachers spent more time working on extra-curricular activities than we did. And our teachers always had a far better record of completed homework assignments than we ever did! They could always brighten up our day with just three little words, No test today! . Their help, their guidance, their perseverance, and their friendship are gifts we will cherish, now and always. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY 99 William T. Kcarns 100 For W.T.K. Keen of eye, of wit, of intellect, disdainer of pomposity and all self-serving attitudes of power, he brought that discipline, which rules himself, to bear on others less skilled or willing to be counseled and thereby wisely led. With values certain, an d caution in the course, against the myriad turbulence he firmly stood. Testament abounds to kind and generous works and loyalty to all who, sensing pride in Weymouth High akin to his, strove to enhance both memory and the dream. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. — Robert Frost 119 Structural Design Paul J. How some days consisted only of crowded cor- ridors, cold lunches, and quiet studies? For some people the school day was always long and tedious. Yet other students felt there were too few hours in the school day to experience all they wanted. These individuals gave both their time and their spirit to Weymouth North. And their advisors smiled proudly when their efforts were appreciated. For the musicians and the actors, the skiers and the writers, every day of school life will be remem- bered. 163 Student Council 1st Row — Sharon Allegra, Annemarie Reilly — sec, Eileen Sullivan — pres., Kathy Chaisson, 2nd Row — Mary Balzano, Mary-Kate Donovan, Patricia Duffy, Susan Rober, Anne Kearney, Sandra Tringale, Elaine Phillips, Pam Ferullo. 3rd Row — Sheila Merten, Craig Binney, Bill Lopez, John Griffin, Kathy Given, Mike Pelland, Chris Sardina, James Egan. A handful of students quite green in putting together a yearbook. 1 photographer who thinks he is as fussy as the art teacher. 1 publisher who comes smiling at deadlines. First mix together the teachers and students until they blend together well, and cook until deadline. Next take a smaller number of students to spread over more pages. Then turn up a radio that looks like it has been through World War III. Add a business editor who is convinced that no one will listen to him and as a result will never let us know if we are in the red. Blend together Dick Sweich garnished with three piece suit to take away the deadline. Remove the photographer and beat well until smooth. Have a vocational editor and a photography editor almost destroy the art room. Add plenty of typographical errors. Never stop cooking even if there is a power failure due to snow. Simmer until well done even if lunch is missed. Substitute with store bought subs. Add pages to desired consistency. Stir in nuts, confusion, smiles, jokes, determination, to add flavor. Send to publisher. Serve: With a smile and crossed fingers. A certain electricity bolted through our bodies as the event began. Even the spectators sensed our excitement. Whether we were competing individually or as a team the feelings within us never lessened. During our past three years at North we have seen grea stars, and witnessed both magnificent wins and pitiful losses Yet we have always had teams that knew how to win or lose gracefully. This certain spirit is what all athletes must posses; to accept defeat, strive for improvement and achieve success. The Thanksgiving Day game was undoubtedly the highlight of the 1977 football season. Under the leadership of senior co-captains Bill Jackson and Tim Taylor, the Maroons put forth an outstanding effort to defeat our arch-rivals, the Weymouth South Wildcats, by a 7-0 score. Jackson provided the scoring early in the final quarter on a touchdown plunge and the point — after conversion. Sterling defensive performances were turned in by Arthur McHugh, Paul DeVincent, and Matt Pettograsso, while Ken Abbott contributed to the win with exciting offensive plays. It has been a three year wait for this coveted Thanksgiving win, but the thrill of this game has made it all worthwhile. 180 Thanksgiving Day Game Led by Co-captains Ron Evans and Fred Allen, and complemented by seniors Scott Hayford and Ron Maltz, the Maroon harriers raced to a record of 3-6. Close meets with Newton and North Quincy kept us from a winning season. Junior Dan Sheehan highlighted the year by earning four top awards in post-season races, and by being named a Suburban League All Star. Cross Country 1st Row — Co-captain Ron Evans, Dan Sheehan, Scott Hayford, Ron Maltz, Coach Paul Fuller. 2nd Row — Mike Putnam, Co-captain Fred Allen, Doug McCloud, Richard Norton, Joe Sullivan. The Girl ' s Cross Country Team, led by Senior Captain Stephanie Garbarczuk, finished the season with a record of 4-4. Outstanding performances were given by Sophomores Audrey Donovan, Tracy Fitzgerald, and Karen Sheehan. While representing Weymouth North in the State Trials, Stephanie fractured her leg but crawled over the finish line! 3 Dan Sheehan Suburban League All Star Audrey Donovan, Karen Sheehan, C aptain Stephanie C.arbarc uk, Coach William Wilson, Ann- Louise Dionne, Joanne O ' Reilly, Tracy Fitzgerald. 182 Cheerleaders It all began with tryouts, A past memory. Throughout the summer and winter, Most of us Worked together for two years. We fought to endure camp, And were shocked by winning evaluations. We grinned through our corny H og calling time in Nebraska. We sweated and froze through games, And prepared so long for parades. We strove for more routines, And better mounts. Sometimes we became cascading failures. We received our injuries one by one, But we kept smiling through the pain. If only others could imagine, What we have experienced and learned. Maybe then they would feel differently, About the name we have earned. Kneeling — Co-captains, Lisa Binney and Joanne Curran. Outstanding performers were Carolyn DiSessa with a season high of 26.85 points, Gail Barchey on bars with a 6.9, and Karen Ganley ' s 7.1 on the beam. Boys ' Gymnastics First Row — Kevin Butler, Jack Garrity, Co-captain Mark Sudbey, Co-captain Peter Flanagan, Linus Kelly, Ken Gullickson. Second Row — Dave Breen, Frank Palmer, Coach Richard Hayes, Mike Sheehan, Ron Carlson, Paul Bagley. The Weymouth North Wrestling Team had its best season in years. Weymouth North is always considered a strong local team, but this year it was considered a strong team in the state. The team was led by Co-Captains Mike Doherty and John Gantley. Outstanding seniors included Joe Clancy, Mark Silva, Jim Dnscoll, Bill Wellock, and Bill Beard. Junior Varsity and Varsity Wrestling Firs! Row — John Doherty, Scott Peterson, Mike Doherty, John Gantly, Tom Plett, David O ' Connor. Mike King, Rick Mills, and Bill Jackson were selected as Suburban League All-Stars; and Steve Bell and Jay Sheehan completed their third year as members of the varsity squad. Most of our graduating seniors will be playing at Prep Schools and Colleges next year. Weymouth North Hockey First Row: Richard Comeau, Gary Gervasi, Chris Cignarella, Peter Hanifan, George Presley, Mark Kundicz, Jim Lavender — Mgr. Second Row: Coach Mr. Ghiorse, Mike Jennings, Steve Conway, Mark Falzone, Ron Harvey, Scott Lovewell, David Bell, Mike Culhane. Third Row: Mike Donaher, Ed Gardner, Dave Cahoon, Bill Leonard, Ken Murphy, Gerry Garner. Season highlights include a 2-2 tie with un defeated Quincy and a 3-2 win over Weymouth South. Highscorers were sophomores Gary Gervasi, Steve Conway, and Dan Cole. Steady defense was played by juniors Mark Falzone and Bill Leonard and sophomores Mark Kundicz and Gerry Garner. Jim Bulens and Ron Harvey shared most of the goaltending with sophomores Mike Donaher and Dave Bell serving as back-ups. 201 Girls 7 Swim Team 1st Row — Carolyn Cunniff, Cathy Given, Nancy MacSherry, Joan Joyce, Sheila Merten, Dawna Kelley. 2nd Row — Coach Chip Riley, Mary Kate Donovan, Jeri Cassese, Mickey Healey, Karen Keith, Ann Sullivan, Joan Ahem. 3rd Row — Paula Settimelli, Carolyn DiSessa, Heidi Binney, Janet Miller, Amy Gabriel, Jane Miller. 4th Row — Chris O ' Neil, Kathy Ivil, Lisa Binney, Co-captains Carolyn Pruzzi and Chris Cunniff, Julie Horigan, Debbie Lyons. In the five year history of girls ' swimming at North, we have never fielded a more enthusiastic and hard working team. Led by Co-captains Chris Cunniff and Carolyn Peruzzi, the girls showed a never ending desire for excellence. The team ' s efforts were rewarded in the Suburban League Championships as they defeated Newton North for the first time by compiling a team record 1 12 points to Newton ' s 108. Amy Gabriel, Janet Miller, and Jane Miller captured twelve points at the Championships in the one meter diving event. All the girls broke the previous team record of 199 points for championship meets. 202 Kneeling left to right: Doug Trudeau, Paul Cashman, Dan Smith, Jason Edmonds, Paul Greene, Clark Welsh. Standing left to right: Mike Grafton, Janeric Lofgren, Paul Mahoney, Tom Evans, Rich Hill, Bruce Ivil, Joe Norton. Boys ' Swim Team Despite a low total in the win column this season, the Boys ' Swim Team did produce three of the best swimmers in the Suburban League: Tom Evans, Jason Edmonds, and Dan Smith. Co-Captain Tom Evans has proven himself to be the best 50 yard freestyler and 100 yard back-stroker in the league. A record holder in both events, he will probably also capture the League record in both events at the upcoming Championships. Jason Edmonds was also a Co-Captain on this year ' s squad, and although he was injured for over three weeks during the season, Jason remained one of the league ' s best freestylers. Dan Smith also had an excellent first year competing in the butterfly. JL mjn _ fc? Returning this September, it seemed as if everything was the same; everything but the fact that we were no longer on the bottom of the totem pole. Being experienced in the ways of North ' we knew what this year had in store for us — or did we? Junior Class Officers underclassmen • underclassmen How confusing the school seemed at first! The only way we could find our way around the school was with our noses in our handbooks. Even then we ended up against a concrete wall. It was tough getting used to being the youngest again, and stranger still having juniors and seniors in our classes. But somehow we managed to survive midyears and school lunches. With a few battle scars remaining, we prepared for our future years at North. O 3 s a ft. A NORTH STAR IS BORN Thank you to Donna Plaumer, Ms. Roubicek, Dave Bouley, and Elaine Phil- lips who all submitted the winning Year- book name, North Star. 237 mi FRIENDLIEST Todd and Jenny FUNNIEST LAUGH Dianna and Richard MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Joyce and Linus TV DID MOST FOR WNHS Sue and Rick MOST DAZZLING SMILE Lori and John BEST DRESSED Bill and Tracy The Torch Is Passed We at Weymouth North were fortunate to know Mr. Edward W. Knight, Jr. as an assistant princi- pal. We were even more fortunate to see him be- come principal of our school this year. He is a sincere and dedicated administrator who believes in all of us. The class of 1978 wishes him success and happiness in his new endeavor. Edward W. Knight, Jr. 239 From the moment of our birth We are faced with many challenges. We have taken many first steps Like mastering the alphabet And reaching the sky on a swing. We memorized an eight stanza poem in Junior High, And we sweated profusely before our first date. We pushed our bodies to the limit when trying out for varsity teams. And as seniors we had to face the future By visiting colleges, businesses, and the Guidance office. We enjoyed every moment of our Senior Prom, And felt something other than happiness at graduation. We can never return to days gone by Except in our treasured memories. By remembering the obstacles we have overcome, And remembering the friendships and happiness we have gained, We can ' t help but turn our thoughts forward In eager anticipation Of our days ahead. 240 ■he • 1
