Each year the faculty of Weymouth North partici- pates in a series of athletic events in order to raise mon- ey for scholarships. Consistant performances came from M. Fay, D. Reddish, and R. Grandfield. With the underclass success Coach Fuller is looking forward to an undefeated season. The Girl ' s Track Team continued to show their excellence on Legion Field in competition with Wey- mouth South. Both schools are looking forward to varsity competition. Led by R. Scarpelle and J. Bouley the Winter Track Team went through a rebuilding year. In spite of this there were a number of bright spots; the upset victory over Waltham, and the consistent scor- ing of P. Bonarrigo and R. Player, Head Coach, R. McPherson. There is no question about it! Weymouth North ' s Football Team was rebuilding in 1972. The highlight of the 1-8 season was the single victo- ry over Boston Tech. The 72-73 Weymouth North Basketball squad under the direc- tion of first year Coach Gregg can be proud of its record. This year ' s Suburban League was close to the strongest league in the state. The season ' s high point was the home victory over powerhouse, Cam- bridge; the biggest letdown was the last minute loss to powerhouse, Newton. Team leaders included R. Long, J. Given, S. Gomey, T. Seniors Mc- Wade, McDonnell, Heffernan, Bal- chunas, Devine, Ring, and Moriar- ty were among the leading perform- ers. The individual success reflected great team spirit. In one meet Senior Ed Stewart sacrificed per- sonal victory in order to try for a team win. The Girl ' s Gymnastic Team un- der the coaching of Mrs. Ferraro and Mrs. Kirby started their suc- cessful season with an overwhelm- ing victory over Waltham. This was only the first of much success. Gillan, J. O Neil, M Straz. BOYS GYMNASTICS The 1972 Boys ' Gymnastic Team led by seniors Larry Cassese and John Courtney proved that hard work pays off. Their successful season was not expected in that many of the boys were on the floor for the first time. Other valuable seniors were Jim Davenport, Lloyd Donnellan, Frank Gillan and John O ' Neil. 128 ACTIVITIES C T I V CHEERLEADERS 134 135 136 139 142 SPANISH CLUB RUSSIAN CLUB 143 144 m TELEVISION CLUB FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA DRAMA CLUB JUNIOR MORALS AND SPIRITUAL VALUES COMMITTEE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY 147 BAND The Weymouth North High School band practices every day under the direction of Mr. Brayton. This year, as always, the band sup- ported the team at football games and pep rallies. In addition to a spe- cial concert with Myron Floren, the band participated in the town pa- rades and in school concerts. CHESS TEAM This was the first year that the Weymouth North Chess Team has been in official competition. They were members of the South Shore Interscholastic Chess League and they competed against such local schools as Braintree and North Quincy and others. The team met every Monday to practice after school. Kurt Boettch- er was the only senior on the team. The advisor of the team was Mr. Murphy. CONCERT CHOIR Concert Choir met everyday dur- ing sixth period. The thirty-five members of this class wish to de- velop their music talents. This year the Concert Choir per- formed at the Christmas program. They also sang Sacred Cantadas at various churches. To get younger children interested in music they performed concerts at junior highs in our area. The Concert Choir pre- sented a spring concert. Members performed in the New England music festivals. Last year the vocals, vocational school students made their debut and they continue to show their abilities. CONSERVATION CLUB The Conservation Club is in- volved in making Weymouth a bet- ter and cleaner town. The annual Herring Run clean-up in the spring is the club ' s main project. The club is also working with Weymouth ' s Recycling Committee. The club ' s major effort is to spread con- cern for our greatly deteriorating environment. DEBATE TEAM Weymouth North ' s small but valiant Debate Team competes in the South Shore Debate League. Debates are held bi-weekly, once at each of the member schools. The national topic debated this year concerned the funding of public education. Varsity Debaters for 1972-73 are Kathy O ' Leary, Pene- lope Allen, Paul Coughlin, and Michael O ' Sullivan. The team is coached by Mr. McElligot. DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club under the direc- tion of Miss Nichols maintains a busy schedule. In the fall the club produced Black Comedy and The Overnight Uncapped Coke Happening . During the winter the club sold posters to gain money to support a trip to the Massachusetts Drama Festival. EXIT NORTH The publication of this yearbook requires hard work on the part of many individuals. The class of 1973 wishes to thank the following people for their contributions; Edi- tors: Penelope Allen, Diane Davis, Patricia Jackson, Patrica Kelly, Katherine Renahan, and Jeryl Sco- lamiero: Typists: Andrea Bellino, Grace Cantelli, and Susan Stafford. The Future Business Leaders of America are students hopeful of gaining knowledge of and experi- ence in the business world. Each year the club visits business organ- izations. The club organizes fund raising projects in order to award scholarship recognition to an out- standing senior. FTA The Future Teachers of America, a club designed to make students more aware of the opportunites in teaching, spent time observing ele- mentary and junior high schools and listening to guest speakers from the field of education. The officers are: President — Dorothy Fardy, Vice-President — Susan Lo- gan, Secretary — Linda Nummelin. Miss Pearson was the faculty advisor. 149 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society at Weymouth North is but one chap- ter of a prestigious, nationwide organization. Members are selected on the basis of scholarship, leader- ship, character and service, and are inducted in either their junior or senior year. In February, the Wey- mouth North chapter held its an- nual College Bowl to earn money for the scholarships it gives each spring. The officers for 1972-73 were Penelope Allen, president; Frank Pantano, vice-president; Mary Grandfield, secretary; Ellen Farrah, treasurer. They were aided by their advisors Mrs. Howley and Mrs. Kalaijian. GERMAN CLUB Some of the German club ' s activ- ities during 1972-73 were a visit to Harvard ' s Busch Reisinge Mu- seum, a hard fought soccer contest against South High and a trip to Germany and Switzerland. Some club members attended a German Christmas party at Boston Univer- sity; while others became believers in eating Germa n food at some of Boston ' s better German restaurants. J.M.S.V.C. J.M.S.V.C. under the direction of Mrs. Moss is headed by Linda Lambe. The organization contains varius committees, each working within a different area. The members of the Blind Com- mittee have get-togethers with the students at Perkins Institute in Watertown. They bowl, skate, play baseball, ping-pong, and ride bicy- cles. The Mentally Retarded Com- mittee visits the Paul A. Dever State School in Taunton on Sunday afternoons, where they talk with the students and go for walks. Those belonging to the Hospital and Elderly Committee make and deliver small gifts to hospital pa- tients and nursing home patients. KEY CLUB The officers of this year ' s Key Club were President: Wayne Har- rington, Vice President: Tony Cas- tagnozzi, Secretary: Paul Curran and Treasurer Keith Coveny. The members of the Key Club made up the Thanksgiving football program this year as well as distributing programs at all of the football games. Members also ran the an- nual Book Fair and Faculty hockey game, through the profits from these, they gave a scholarship in June. Members attended Kiwanis district and New England Meetings as well as assisting in their youth hockey tournament. The Key Club members took a pleasure trip to New York in February. Mr. Daly was the adviser for the Key Club. LATIN CLUB The Latin Club, which is under the supervision of Mrs. Johansson, is open to Latin students of all years. The annual banquet was held in the spring, in the Home Econom- ics Suite. It was run and attended by the club members. The president was Frank Pantano: secretary, Mary Viau: treasurer, Nancy White. LAW CLUB The Law Club met every Thurs- day under the direction of Miss O ' Connell. Dues were collected to support a scholarship, given to a deserving student who plans to study law. The club members staged a court-room drama, they also took trips to the Rockland Bank and the Weymouth Police Station. Club officers were presi- dent, Rita Sullivan; vice-president, Lucia Qualey; secretary, Virginia Hudson and treasurer, Carol Jackson. MATH TEAM The Weymouth North Math Team actively participates in The Greater Boston Mathematics League under the direction of Miss McDonald and Mr. Green. The team competes four times a year against the other teams in the league. This year Weymouth North reached a new high in its league standing. Between meets, Wey- mouth North has practice meets with Weymouth South. Penelope Allen and James Dav- enport are the co-captains and Paul Leo is the treasurer of the team, which this year consists of 25 mathematically oriented students. PEP CLUB This years officers were Presi- dent; Elaine Crowley, Vice Presi- dent; Helen Fitzgerald, Secretary; Karen Mulready, and Treasurer, Laura Downing. 150 The members participated in the Powder Puff football game along with the cheerleaders in defeating the Student Council. The club also held a pep rally before the Thanks- giving Day game. The members also hired buses, sold calendars and showed their all round support at all of the school sports events. The girls adviser was Miss Arnold. They all did their best to make it a successful year. SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club has been or- ganized to encourage interest in the culture of Spanish speaking coun- tries. This year at Christmas time, a pinata party was held. The mem- bers also enjoyed a dinner at La- Iruna in Cambridge. In June, a gift was presented to a graduating se- nior who excelled in Spanish throughout high school and plans to continue in some related field. STUDENT COUNCIL This year, under the direction of Mr. Thibodeau, the Student Coun- cil of Weymouth North ran a raffle in order to raise money for a schol- arship in the name of our departed classmate, Mary Ellen O ' Sullivan. The Council also set up a commit- tee to revise the handbook that is given out every year to the stu- dents. Numerous cake sales were held by the council throughout the year in order to raise money. This year ' s officers are; President Rob- ert Scarpelli, Vice-President Joseph Donovan, Secretary Lyn Bagley, Treasurer Maryanne Hackett. RUSSIAN CLUB Under the supervision of Miss Perry met bimonthly during the school year to pursue their interest in Russian culture — headed by president John O ' Neil, and seniors Mary Grandfield, Tom Colligan, Doug George and Bill Fardy, the group arranged several trips to films, concerts and exhibits of in- terest to the group. SKI CLUB As in previous years, the North and South high school ski clubs joined for a ski weekend at Mt. Ascutney in southern Vermont. With a total of 120 students, this joint effort was very successful. The officers of the club, Jim Halpin and John Walker were instrumental in organizing this venture. The club is grateful to all chaperones, espe- cially Mississippi, our photo- graphic expert who heightened the spirit and moral of the weekend. During the Feb. vacation, North and South high also combined for a trip to Cervinia, Italy. TELEVISION CLUB The television club had a suc- cessful year. The club met during studies and on Thursday after- noons. The advisors, Mr. Gelles and Mrs. Titemore, assisted the members in the writing, producing, and performing of television pro- grams.
