The team registered wins against Cambridge Latin, Brookline, Rindge Tech, Arlington, and a close victory over Weymouth South. Scores are determined by the f irst five finishers from each team. The team with the lowest score wins. This year ' s seniors were Mike Hen- ley, Russell Gardner, John Baker, Tony Gaeta, Paul White, Tim Walsh, Keary Naughton, and John Cappazzoli. Mr. O ' Leary and Mr. Lyons, a student teacher, were chiefly responsible for the teams performance, practicing four or five days a week to prepare for the season. Hi, there! ' 22 Girls ' Track This is the first year that Wey- mouth North has had a girls ' track team. The girls competed in shot put, javelin, running long jump, standing long jump, hurdles, fifty yard dash, and 220, 440, and 880 relays. Football The 1971-72 football campaign, started well and ended on a spar- kling note for this year ' s Maroons. The team began the season with a well earned 18-0 victory over 1971 class A champ Lowell, and went out in style with a 24-13 romp over powerful Brockton. Wins over Wal- tham and North Shore power Sal- em gave the team an overall 4-5 record. Juniors John Bouley and Steve Antonowicz, seniors George Liset and Dennis McLaughlin along with co-captains Scott Berry and Dave Totman contributed to the team ' s success. A lot of time must also be spent in practicing. The high points for this year s cheerleaders were the Thanksgiving game at Brockton and the Basketball State Tournament. They also cheered at a cross country meet in which Wey- mouth North beat Weymouth South by one point. For some extra student support, the cheerleaders also sold buttons and newspapers featuring the sports teams. B A S K E T B A L L Basketball Weymouth North ' s Basketball team coached by Mr. William Reams achieved what four previ- ous Weymouth teams had been striving for: A berth in the State Tournament. Finishing the season with a 13-5 record, they qualified for the tournament in an exciting win at Brockton. Leading the team were seniors: Dave Totman, Sub- urban league allstar; Ron Crowley, Brad Gregg; Pete Tileston and Jim Cunningham. Aggressive team play and defense were the keys to North ' s success. Co- captains Steve Cappelini and Bo O ' Shaughnessy, along with senior Bob Buckley controlled the team ' s defense, a defense that produced four shut-outs. Look out for splinters, Michael! Boys Gymnastics The Boys Gymnastics team, after losing a considerable amount of tal- ent to graduation, looked upon the 71-72 season as one of rebuilding. The team, coached by Mr. Richard Hayes and Mr. Joseph Mackey, competed against many teams whose gymnasts had been involved in the sport all through secondary school. Stories were written and copy read, dummies typed, stenciled, and completed with by-lines by Thursday. Miss Jones, the managing edi- tor , censored all material for the Journal. The two editors of each page — news, editorial, feature, sports — dealt out assignments and prepared their page for press. Keep at it. Kevin! He winks: And the splendor grows, And the Royal coach glides near; He holds her in his arms, gently, And the peppermint steeds Swiftly draw them through the ebony sky. Floating Over the air, soft At first, then stronger, An enchanting tune delights them; The peppermint ponies know — And carry their coach gently through the stars. The tone Of the tune deepens, Crescendoes thund ' ring O ' er the endless sky, smothering Her tender words of love — And the coach flies hurriedly by the moon.
