Senior Joe Lamm was back as was last year ' s second line of Paul Haley, Wayne Douglas, and Steve Wrye. Mr. Dempsey had the task of choos- ing a new team from the eighty candi- dates who wished to make the squad. The team started slowly, registering a 3-4-2 record in the first half of the season. The young team gained experi- ence and compiled a respectable 6-2-1 record in the remaining games. Seniors Bob Goggin, Charlie Dor- man, and Joe Lamm played an import- ant role in Weymouth ' s second half success. In the year end all-star balloting, Steve Wrye was chosen for the second team. Honorable mentions were ac- corded to Bob Goggin, Paul Haley, Wayne Douglas, and Bo O ' Shaugh- nessy. With the loss of only three players, it would seem that a fine year lies ahead. Tempering this thought is the reality that the squad will be divided into two teams in the strong Suburban League. 130 Front row, I. to r.: P. Smith, R. Buckley, D. McQuade, B. Collins, P. A versatile group, the team exhibited their skills in floor exercises, in vaulting, on the balance beam, and on the un- even bars. CHEERLEADERS From the first rousing cheer to the last second of play, our cheerleaders have charged the air with their enthusi- asm and excitement. Captained by Cheryl liickford, they encouraged both our football and basketball teams to make their best efforts this year. The Hospital Committee worked diligently all year to make favors for the area hospitals and in- stitutions. The international assembly and Brotherhood Week were great successes. Foreign students toured our school for one day, and then introduced themselves at an interesting assembly. STUDENT COUNCIL Composed of elected representatives of the school, the Student Council meets regularly each week under the super- vision of Miss Martinez and Mr. Brizzi. This year ' s officers are President, Ed Nalband; Vice President, Steve Hartry; Secretary, Kathy Dempsey; Treasurer, Chris Materia. Perhaps their greatest accomplish- ment was the establishing of a new dress code. The officers review the minutes of the last meeting. 150 CHORUS Under the direction of Mr. Burns, the Weymouth High School Chorus pre- sented many entertaining performances throughout the year. The Madrigal Dinner held in December and a concert at Symphony Hall for American Air- lines brought them much recognition. Also, they did an outstanding job sing- ing at Old South Union Church and at our own Spring Concert. The Weymouth High School Chor- ale, composed of ex ceptionally talented chorus members, worked hard in pre- senting various special choral pieces. At the National Honor Society induc- tion ceremony in March, they displayed their unique ability. The band sparked Weymouth fans ' spirit at all the football games and provided in- teresting half-time entertainment as well. Our band is one of the most highly re- spected high school bands in the state, thanks to the efforts of hardworking, interested students, and the dedication of Mr. Warren, who works not only with the band as a whole, but with the individual musicians as well. The band not only supplies enter- tainment for the school, but also pro- vides its services for the community. It schedules concerts twice a year for in- terested Weymouth citizens, backs up the high school chorus at its concerts, and marches in town-wide parades and celebrations. Particularly talented musicians were chosen to par- ticipate in the All-State, District, and New England Concert Festivals. Our dedicated majorettes. F.B.L.A. Dur- ing the school year, these officers, along with active club members, entertained many interesting guests, including a recruiter from the Army Nurse Corps and several student nurses from vari- ous schools. Also, the group viewed the film Downhill Racer. Traversing the slopes. 166 DEBATE SOCIETY One of the most important but least publicized activities at Weymouth High School is the Debate Club. Consisting of two divisions, varsity and novice, the team regularly debates the national high school topic. This year the topic was, Resolved: That Congress should prohibit United States unilateral mili- tary intervention. In debate, the emphasis is not on winning, but on the development of logic. The logic that is involved in the research, organization, and presenta- tion of a plan gives valuable aid to students planning to study forensics, writing, or other related subjects. This year, the Debate Club, under the direction of Mr. John Ghiorse, participated in many debate seminars sponsored by the South Shore Debate League. This prepared the students for the round of invitational debate tour- neys which was held later in the year. President i Members of the Debate Team. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society was established May 1, 1969. The purpose of the society is to honor the academic, leadership, and citizenship qualities of a student. With their unique amiable personalities, these nine foreign students have gready enriched both our student body and faculty in human understanding. Familiar faces from foreign lands. THEATRE ARTS CLUB With a total membership of over thirty students, the Theatre Arts Club possesses a great deal of talent. Under the direction of Mr. Daniels, the club presented an evening of one act plays. Needless to say, this production was very successful. A thorn amongst roses. 169 SENIOR CLASS PLAY Under the superb direction of Mr. McCarthy, the class of 70 presented Stardust as its senior class play. A hilarious comedy by Walter Keir, it involves a young actress ' rise to fame. The amusing plot was treated with origi- nality and ingenuity by the talented dramatic club members. Co-editors Bill Concannon and Charlie White, along with Dave Griswold, Kevin Coyne, and Mark Mulready, succeed each week in pro- ducing an interesting account of school events. The entire student body par- ticipates by submitting their own articles. Faculty advisor, Mr. Porter, assists the students each week by giving his opinions and advice. The Reflector, Weymouth High ' s lit- erary magazine, is the publising outlet for creative members of the student body. The magazine publishes poetry, short stories, reviews, essays, art work, and other pieces of an artistic nature. The staff, headed by editor Joanne D ' Alcomo and Asst. Editor Mike Ed- monds, writes articles on topics of in- terest, and collects literary works from the student body. Material is evaluated by an editorial board of seven staff members, who determine which pieces will be printed. Diligent secretaries then type the articles to the specifications of the print shop, who print the magazine in its final form. This year ' s first issue was the best in Reflector history, containing ninety pages of superb, original creations. The staff and student body should be congratulated for producing consistent- ly enlightening literature. W here ' s the E?
