Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1963 volume:

Progress through education; education through progress - these are two ideals sought by our generation as we endeavor to advance the intellectual potentials of our youth. Through the educational system of today, we attempt to reach ever-ascending heights of de- velopment in order to produce the alert minds, creative abilities and intellectual capabilities necessary to produce ac- complishments worthy of our past and essential to our future. Progressive de- velopment follows academic achieve- ment. By the application of knowledge and skill acquired through education, we are able to fulfill man ' s destiny to surge forward and upward. Our intel- lectual endeavors will be the launching pad for America ' s future successes. Sci- entific, social, and cultural advances, integral parts of any mobile society ' s hopes and dreams, can only be pro- duced by mature, highly developed minds. The achievement of our na- tion ' s noble purpose of world peace and enlightenment is thus inevitably linked with the progress of education - they will advance or stagnate inexo- rably together. The exten- sive plans and construction of this building were culminated in the fulfill- ment of a much awaited promise, the promise of a, building erected for the continued improvement of education. We, the class of 1963, wish to convey our profound gratitude to the towns- people of Weymouth. As taxpayers, they have served as the constructors of our institutions, the builders of our youth. Through their support a dream of educational development has been realized. Without education, progress is impossible, for education is the in- dispensable step in the formation of ideas. It is therefore requisite that edu- cational methods be continually im- proved and expanded, in order that they might provide the full advantage for continued development of the in- quiring minds of today ' s youth. In our constantly changing world, and in the face of ideological strife, it has become even more essential that we prepare our youth mentally, physically and spiritually to carry out the enor- mous responsibilities of the adultworld. Therefore, we recognize the value, ma- terially and morally, of the new high school. Environment affects the work of students. With the introduction of modern architectural designing and the extension of classroom and school re- sources, individual achievement is ac- celerated; the students are inspired to continue in their endless search for knowledge. In acknowledgement of the immense contribution this new school will make to our future successes, we gratefully express our heartfelt thanks to the townspeople of Weymouth and dedicate to them this record of our apprenticeship. 7 ■ • 1 I I ■ IN THE SPIRIT OF PROGRESS The huge glass door of the new Wey- mouth High School opens on an arch- itectural panorama of beauty and util- ity. Color-splashed corridors lead the way to classrooms where long lines of windows brighten every room. The school stretches out on 12 different lev- els, rising by half flights of stairs. The audio-visual department has its own closed-circuit television studio, modern cameras, and recording equipment. The main gymnasium can easily be divided into two large basketball courts, and the auditorium of the new school repre- sents one sixth of the building. Behind the stage are sound-proof music halls. In the science department there are laboratories of tomorrow. The vo- cational shops are lighted by saw teeth skylighting only, leaving the wall space free for machines and tools. One of the most beautiful rooms is the enormous cafeteria, a circular room surrounded by windows with ceiling beams striking out from the center dome like spokes on a wheel. In short, the finest facilities are offered to the students, promising them every opportunity to further their learning under the best of conditions. But wait - why not turn the page and see for yourself? ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY: PROGRESS THROUGH GUIDANCE 16 LEADERSHIP Able and consistent leadership, the es- sential ingredient in the success of any enterprise, is an infinitely more integral component in the educational process, whose most valued end product is the leadership potential it nurtures in its charges, tomorrow ' s citizens. Without the guiding, steadying influence of ad- ministrators dedicated to the develop- ment of intellectual, moral, and physi- cal strength and resource for our God and our country, no high school, re- gardless of the talent of its faculty or the scope of its physical plant, can long maintain its true course. Our continued success and achievement are the true criteria of our administrators. Wallace L. Whittle: Principal, Weymouth High School Ray C. Parker: Principal, Weymouth Vocational Technical High School INSTRUCTION Among the many facets of our educa- tion, the one which we perhaps take most for granted and for which we are most grateful is the faculty - a group of more than a hundred men and women from every social, cultural, and educa- tional level of American life, yet united by that intangible common bond of dedication to the enrichment of youth Frances G. SERVICE The efficiency of a school as large and complex as ours depends in great meas- ure upon the support functions provid- ed by the various administrative of- fices and departments. Without consis- tent and dependable service, the educa- tional process could falter. That our school does operate so smoothly, even during such crises as the mid-year move to the new building, is high praise indeed to our behind-the-scenes stal- warts, the office staffs, who daily handle so many duties so well. Janet Eburn Secretary AV Department Doris Holbrook Secretary Athletic Office Marion Gerstel Assistant Secretary WVTHS Louise Lockwood Secretary WVTHS KEEPERS OF THE SCHOOL BEAUTIFUL Weymouth High School is fortunate indeed to have a staff of custodians who are both capable and friendly. While involved with the myriad duties necessary to keep our vast building gleaming and functional, they are al- ways ready with a smile and an assist whenever they are needed by faculty or students. In our constant efforts to put our best face forward, we owe much to Mr. Loud and his men, who contribute so much to the health and morale of all of us. Manager of Cafeteria Louise Courchene, Marv Phillips, Mildred Cavanaugh, Hazel Mill Every school day the patience, stam- ina, and skill of Our cafeteria ' s able cooks and servers are tested anew as two thousand hungry faculty, staff, and students descend for two hours in seem- ingly endless waves upon this belea- guered staff. And every day, led by Miss Watts and Mrs. Allen, these ca- pable people meet the invasion armed with a varied and pleasing menu which stems the onslaught until the next day. CURRICULUM: PROGRESS THROUGH EDUCATION I wish that bell would ring, Mr. Dow. THE NEW BREED Sophomore Officers: Harry Gibbon (Pres.), David Ellison (V. Pres.), Virginia Meany ( Treas.), Helen Gannon (Sec ' t.). Another school year has passed, and the quiet student who timidly opened the doors of Weymouth High School for the first time in September is gone. In his place stands a more confident in- dividual, better prepared to cope with the problems presented by the school curriculum. He looks forward with an- ticipation to future years when he will be one of the veterans of high school routine, with the added privileges and responsibilities which this new position entails. The sophomore class have shown themselves to be readily adapt- able to a situation strange to them, and to possess those qualities which should be manifested by every person who represents our high school. In their hands rests the future of our school. If they continue to uphold the standards which we have tried to sustain in the past, the future of this building will as- suredly equal and even surpass that of the one which we left in December. 99 Enjoying one of their most memorable years, the juniors look back with fond memories upon their initial year in high school, and ahead to the culmina- tion of twelve years of work. At this crucial time in the lives of our youth, the burden and privilege of responsibil- ity suddenly becomes apparent. New vistas of learning and experience ma- ture the individual and prepare him to face all the joys and disappointments that lie ahead. In the year which fol- lows, this training will first begin to present itself as an integral part of ev- ery life. As upperclassmen, the juniors will find themselves unconsciously as- suming the role of leaders in the school program. Every step brings them near- er to their ultimate goal, and the fulfill- ment of years of education and train- ing. Therefore we urge the junior class to make full use of the opportunities of the coming year. Junior Officers: George Manning ( Treas. ) Linda Badavas ( Sec ' t. ) Joe Hassan ( Pres.) Mary Lou Lyons ( V. pres. ) HEIRS APPARENT 100 THE FINISHED PRODUCT Mmm. . . .late again, I see. Youth is the embodiment of imagina- tion and hope; there lies just beyond the reach of every young individual promise of a new and exciting life, the hope of acquiring the wisdom and ma- turity of adult men and women. Before we, the senior class of 1963, are able to prove ourselves worthy of the privileges of this society, we must be prepared to meet the responsibility of maintaining a high standard of moral and intellec- tual growth. We feel that the three years which we have spent at Wey- mouth High School have served a vital part in achieving this. We have had the opportunity to associate with other people and have learned to sense the inner value of each individual. Prog- ress and education have worked hand in hand to insure the development of our minds and ideals. The school seems to reflect the pattern of our own conception of progress, as we constant- ly look forward, not waiting for the world to come to us, but watching it unfold before us through our own ef- forts. 103 Now, for some written entertainment, let ' s try these trip examples. Mr. Ryder MOLDING THE MODERN MIND An increasing number of today ' s high school students are desirous of further- ing their education in widely varied colleges and universities. In order to prepare students to meet the require- ments of these selective institutions, Weymouth High School offers the Col- lege Preparatory Course. The ability to consider, reflect upon, and Inquire is promoted in such courses as geometry, algebra, trigonometry and calculus. As the world progresses, new conflicts arise; an understanding of the existing problems is essential for forming a solu- tion or compromise. History courses and Problems of Democracy show how history repeats itself and can be changed. The advancements of science lead to extended research work in cours- es of chemistry, biology, and physics. The college course curriculum is round- ed out by English classes and three foreign languages. With the willing and unfaltering aid of our well-quali- fied teachers, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are prepared both emotionally and intellectually for college life. Good night, Chet . . . Good night, David — Language Lab 105 EFFICIENCY IS THE WATCHWORD Judy Brewer — a whiz with numbers. Each year Weymouth High School pre- pares hundreds of capable students to fill positions as secretaries, office work- ers and countless others necessary to the staff of any successful business cor- poration. Carefully prepared courses in such essentials as Economics, Law, Bookkeeping and Business Administra- tion are open to those students who wish to enter this field. Fortunately, the level of instruction and clerical equip- ment offered to these students has kept pace with the high improvements in of- fice technology. By using these advan- tages to the best of their knowledge, by developing skills in shorthand, typing and bookkeeping, business students are able to enter their respective fields with a more extensive idea of exactly what is expected of them and what the work will involve. Often heard in the office practice room, Oh, this addition and subtraction. Isn ' t anyone awake? Mrs. Doucette explains the art of selling in Distributive Education. 108 Not only flying fingers, but accuracy and speed are found in the type rooms. Mass concentration is needed in learning the intricacies of bookkeeping. 109 Ill PROFICIENCY Open up wide, Dick Bell The presses roll! Industry and mechanics are rapidly advancing in every field as the stand- ard of living improves. It will be es- sential in the future to have capable and efficient men to handle the complex machinery of the factories and plants and to provide the population with the materials necessary for comfortable and convenient living. Through the vocational course at Weymouth, we strive to give the boys a thorough un- derstanding of such important sides of our changing world. They are offered courses in auto body, graphic arts, sheet metal, electronics, cabinetmaking and carpentry which prepare them for positions immediately after graduation or for apprenticeships. The theory learned during the classroom periods is to put to use not only in the well- equipped shops in the school but also in the community. From overhauling engines to laying the plans and founda- tions for the modern home, the students at Weymouth Vocational Technical School are truly making progress through education. 113 ATHLETICS: PROGRESS THROUGH COMPETITION 116 Smiling Substitutes: Laurie Happel, Joanne Tancreto, Paula Kachadorian, Sherry Adams, Carole Burns and Kathy Kezer. SPIRIT WITH ANIMATION From the first rousing cheer to the last second of play, our cheerleaders have given all their might to urge our teams on to victory. Captained by Elaine McClung and supported by the pep club, Ferdinand and students, they have managed with tremendous spirit and enthusiasm to inspire the Maroons to make their best efforts on the field and on the basketball court. Judging by the students response, our cheerleaders were tops, for students participated will- ingly and proudly in the skits and cheers of rallies and games. Things are looking up! Clockwise: Betty Anne Knox, Christine Dane, Lorraine Payne, Kathy Carroll, Elaine McClung, Carolyn Back, Pam Peterson, Janice Porter and Connie Auld. Foursome with Finesse The twirling of batons, the waving of maroon and gold flags, and the high- stepping of our majorettes during half- time is a very impressive sight to spec- tators. Their enthusiasm and vigor convey a feeling of pride in the school and in the performances of our students. This year ' s majorettes, headed by Carolyn Robinson, are Bobbie Sassa, Jane King, and Kathy O ' Shaughnessy. As they lead the band down the football field or lead a parade after a game, we can be proud of these girls who are an asset to the student body. Dave Ellison makes the tackle as Mike Brown (61) rushes over. Battling their way down the gridiron, our stalwart Maroons proved a chal- lenge to all opponents. Coached by John Fisher, Weymouth High ' s foot- ball team made the students and sup- porters very proud of their efforts. After overcoming a first game defeat, Wey- mouth was triumphant in a contestwith North Quincy ' s Red Raiders and the Whalers of New Bedford by scores of 20-6 and 20-18 respectively. A frustra- ting loss to the Waltham Watchmakers by the narrow margin of one point was assuaged by a 20-0 shut-out overQuin- cy, and in the final traditional game of the season with Brockton, the Wey- mouth team thrilled a capacity crowd by rallying to tie Brockton 8-8. The strong offensive of the team was backed by Bill Schleiff and Eddie O ' Brien, who blocked superbly; and the most out- standing plays of the season were the result of steady teamwork among play- ers Joel Ouellet, Craig MacDonald. John Thompson, Jim Stohl, Dewev Bo- rellini, Steve Allison, and Jim Dunn. 121 OVER HILL, ' OVER DALE Eddie O ' Connor, Bill Downey, Dick O ' Connor, Larry O ' Connor, Bill Cilpin, Dave Sjostedt, Harvey Kreuger, Dave Shea. William Scott Doug Gleason, Arthur Bugbee This year was a building year for the Cross Country Team. Interested boys spent their spare time developing their co-ordination by running over the two and one-half mile course. Bill Peter Scott and Dick Parker proved to be the outstanding senior boys this year. Bill Downey, Larry O ' Connor and Dave Sjostedt were the top three underclass- men. Captain of this year ' s team was Mike O ' Connor and elected co-captains for next season were Bill Downey and Larry O ' Connor. Next year the boys will participate in several meets on the South Shore. They will be seen in the South Shore Meet and the State Meet, the top two events of the Cross Country season in the area. Until then they will be seen participating in Spring Track or running along the streets of town. 124 First Row (left to right): John Burns, Steve Gladis, Mike Casey, Robert King, Dick Boyd, Art Hommel, Ken Smith, Clifford Willy. THE SHARPSHOOTERS Led by the outstanding playing of sen- iors Bob King and Dick Boyd, our basketball team sparked a renewed in- terest in the sport and have been acred- it to their supporters. Revived from a somewhat disappointing 1962 season, this vear ' s team has compiled a fine winning record. Coach William Kearns credits our success to the great amount of teamwork exemplified by his boys. Although Weymouth plays in a strong Suburban League against such teams as Rindge Tech and Brockton, You see, coach, it was like this. . . 126 Frustrated Frank Wisneski. Hey, I ' ve got the ball! Steve Quintin we narrowly missed qualifying for the Tech Tourney and finished in a respec- table position in the league standings. The two starting seniors received able support from the outstanding play of the underclassmen. Junior Frank Wis- neski and sophomore Dave Ellison hold the key to next season. A strong defense and good scoring capabilities, coupled with added experience, should certainly carry Weymouth High into Tourney competition next year. Speed and marksm anship were the key words during this past winter ' s season with Weymouth High School ' s hockey team. Coached by William Dempsev, the boys worked together in a strong unit making their best efforts whether they won or lost. Holding on to fourth place in the South Shore League, the boys utilized the offensive-defensive strategies learned during their long and intensive practice sessions. The impres- sive record includes victories over King Philip 4-0; Scituate 4-2; and Canton 5-1. Under the leadership of seniors Dave Johnson and Mike De Luca, the team exhibited power and enthusiasm. As leading scorer, Dave proved to be a Weymouth stalwart by demonstra- ting extraordinary offensive plays, while Dick Elliot stopped many key shots in the goal. Because of Mike De Luca ' s versatility and sophomore Bob Sheehan ' s developing abilities, the fans have indeed seen talent flashing across the ice. 128 Up. up. . . Hal Sparks . . .and away! Pete Shinney placed fourth in the three-hundred yard dash, while Joel Ouellet came in fourth in the meet ' s shot put event; and Mike O ' Connell flew over the hurdles to break another school record. The team is coached by Mr. Dudley O ' Leary, and the boys are given constant work-outs for improv- ing their timing, speed and general physical condition. This year the de- velopment of these skills in a more ex- tensive program has paid off; and we can expect an equally successful season next year with the assistance of such juniors as Bill Downey and Steve Tem- ple; and sophomores Mike Busa. MASTERS ON THE MAT The principal object of the wrestling team is to train the squad in the funda- mentals of grappling and holding, and the development of precision and tim- ing. The boys are taught the value of using measured movements and of an- ticipating the actions of their opponents. Under the supervision of Mr. John Hill, the team exercises most every day in the boys ' gym. While there, they are seen engaging in bouts among them- selves, attempting new holds or perfec- ting old ones. Among some of the lead- ing m embers of the team are Joel Ouel- let, an excellent prospect for the state championship meets, Bob Huntington, who deserves praise for his agility on the mats, and Jimmy DeCoste, a strong contender in the weight class. Through participation in this sport, these boys have progressed in both die physical and moral sense. Thus the team has proved itself a worthy member of the athletics division of Weymouth High School. 132 PACE SETTERS 134 Running, jumping, and weight events made up the daily program followed by Coach Dudley O ' Leary and the members of the spring track team. The team ' s participation in competitions with the other teams in the Suburban League served as extra preparation for the big events of the season — the State Meet and the St. John ' s Relays in Dan- vers. Emphasized in this strenuous outdoor program were the running events at distances up to a mile; the high jumps, broad jumps and pole vault; and the field events, including the discus, javelin and shot put. The boys usually concentrated on one or two events and could be seen arduous- ly practicing daily before each meet. In anticipation of the State Meet, the boys pinned their hopes on Pete Shinney, who placed fourth in the three-hundred yard dash last year in the State Meet. Odier outstanding trackmen who led Weymouth on to victory were Mike Casey, Tom Hall and Bill Armstrong. All in ail another successful season was enjoyed by our spring track men. Pete Shinney 135 WITH A CRACK OF THE BAT Defensive consistency was the principal aim of Weymouth High School ' s base- ball team this season. Good fielding is the backbone of any baseball team, and with a strong nucleus returning from last year ' s squad, Coach George Player fielded a much- improved squad. The shortstop position was greatly strengthened by the above-average play of Senior Jim Stohl. Blinding the op- position with his whizzing fast-ball, Jun- ior John Burns ranked as the number one pitcher, backed up by Senior Craig MacDonald, who last year successfully overpowered an undefeated Newton club. Dick Boyd provided the offensive punch assisted by the capable Bill Foley. Other boys who played an im- portant role in the success of the club were: Cliff Willy, Charlie Melanson, Colin Bell and Mike De Luca. Charlie at y our service! Emphasis was placed on developing their co- ordination and timing, and furthering their mastery of golf technique. Each boy was required to maintain a high standard of playing form and an aver- age score of eighty. Contributing to the team ' s excellent record were players such as Norm Forsythe, Ken Ohlson, Steve Marshall, Chris Hartley and Charlie Lowe. With patience and skill the boys have completed another suc- cessful season, certainly maintaining the reputation gained by the previous efforts of last year ' s team. THE RAQUET SQUAD With the ever increasing interest in ten- nis as a spectator sport, Weymouth High School ' s Tennis Team has enjoy- ed an interval of vitality unequaled in its short history — thanks to Mr. Dempsey, whose unflagging interest and excellent instruction have main- tained a high level of enthusiasm among the members of the group. Sev- eral boys who had played in previous years returned to again score points, and enjoy once more the thrill and ex- citement which are a part of the sport. David Johnson, Howard Barnhart, Robert Paone, Paul Cameron and Dean Cushing, all fine players, have all dis- played their skill for at least two years consecutively. Because of its growing prominence as a part of interscholastic competition, the team expects to en- large its program in the coming year. If you miss. . . ALLEY-OOP Form and grace have been the goals of the gymnastic team in their second year of practice. Each girl has come to real- ize the importance of taking part in an organized program of exercise and tum- bling and of learning how to apply her skills in daily life. At a planned pace, the girls gradually become accustomed to the vigorous practice sessions while developing both co-ordination and agil- ity. One excellent example of the value and importance of such a program is the participation in gymnastic meets every season. The competition serves as an incentive to the girls as they do walkovers, flips, backbends, and som- ersaults; and it also reveals the success- ful results of a year ' s work through teamwork and co-operation. Originating this year under the direc- ticrn of Mr. Hayes, the boy ' s gym team is preparing for possible interscholastic competition next year. This is a monu- mental task since there is no one on the team with prior experience. However, the response was enthusiastic, and Mr. Hayes is very optimistic about its fu- ture. Outfitted with the best equipment in the new gym, the boys have practiced many new stunts. The rigorous pro- gram includes the use of the high bar, the horse and parallel bars, as well as long horse vaulting and tumbling. Also incorporated in the over-all physical development program is free exercise. This is comprised of tumbling on the floor and vigorous workouts. Point Those Toes! Composed of elected representatives of the school, this organization is the liaison between students and administration. Among the successful activities conducted this year were the annual book fair, the stu- dent-faculty basketball game, and the ' ' Friendship Frolic. the proceeds of each affair going to the scholarship fund. With cafeteria facilities for all students, it was found that a patrol was necessary to keep order and neatness in the cafe- teria. To build better relations with other high schools, exchange days were held, where student council members of other schools were guests of Weymouth while our members visited their schools. Through this magazine, advised by Miss Andem and co-editors Lois Ryder and Stephen Buder, students are able to ex- press themselves creatively and to gain satisfaction through seeing their work in print. Amidst the confusion and dis- order of deadlines, proofreading, writ- ing, mailing, and layout come the is- sues which have consistendy won a- wards for excellence. The art staff car- ries out the important function of illus- trating the magazine. Each article is illustrated individually by a capable member of the staff. Thus literary and artistic efforts are co-ordinated so that the end product may be both enjoyable to the reader and worthy of merit in the eyes of the school. Meet the junior members. As the graduating class reflect upon their high school years, they recall many memorable moments. These are the ac- tivities participated in, the courses strug- gled through, the friendships gained, and all the small, simple events which com- bine to form treasured memories never to be forgotten. Although these recollec- tions may tend to fade in their minds as the years slip by, they are kept alive forever in the class yearbook. This memento, the Campus, represents the combined efforts of Mr. John Kearney, Mr. Philip Dolan, and the Campus staff. Each phase of production presents new challenges and experiences, all of which require a sense of responsibility and per- severance. From editor-in-chief to copy- reader, the tasks are ever-present, each presenting its little or gigantic problem, resulting in a minor crisis or chaos. The most memorable moments of Campus work are those of laughter shared by the staff, the tears which follow so many disappointing and hopeless moments and the indefinable sense of belonging as a result of contributing to the class. These can never be forgotten. These memories will remain always in the minds and hearts of those who worked together to create the 1963 Campus, their contribution to the graduating class of ' 63. Many students who aspire to the teaching profession participate in Weymouth High ' s Chap- ter of the Future Teachers of America and benefit from the many activities of- fered by the organization Advised by Miss Dorothy Pearson, members learn that teaching is hard work, constant re- sponsibility, and a source of great re- ward. Through actual observations and practice teaching, the students are able to see and to understand the fundamen- tals necessary for successful instruction. This year ' s program, led by Pres. Regina Clarke, was considerably broad- ened to include a mother ' s tea and bi- monthly meetings. Don ' t you spell it with a k ? The desires for giving service and love to fellow man, which are so needed in this phase of the medical sciences, is strengthened through the activities of the Future Nurses Club of America. Since many of the members are eagerly anti- cipating going into training and have many questions about this exciting fu- ture, much of the program centers about investigating the opportunities and ad- ventures open to the girls. This investi- gation is in the form of field trips, guest speakers and information given to the girls by their adviser, Mrs. MaryHoyle, R.N. With their background in the Future Nurses Club under the leadership of President Dianne Cameron, the future nurses from Weymouth High will certain- ly be creditable assets to the community. What teamwork! Who ' d mind being sick with nurses like these? 153 We forgot the paper! TAKE A LETTER. Ready to start The secretarial position is one of the most numerous and yet one of the most responsible careers available to a girl. In preparation for the responsibilities of this occupation, Weymouth High has a program for senior girls outstanding in the business course. These girls act as personal secretaries to staff and faculty members. They assume the burden of typing and mimeographing educational materials and help in correspondence and business tasks. It is an honor for a girl to be chosen by Miss Norris as a senior secretary. Each one realizes that she must do her work neatly and accu- rately, and it is imperative for her to keep all work confidential. In this way, the secretary acquires more practice in the business skills, as well as a sense of the responsibilities and confidence she must assume once she enters into the professional world. Having come from Uruguay this past summer, they were more than eager to join a club which brings the students of Weymouth a better understanding of their language. Both took courses in English, Spanish and typewriting to help them in under- standing our language. They had stud- ied English less than a year before com- ing to the United States. This year ' s program placed much emphasis on the theme School Spirit. In order to keep the students well-informed, the committee took charge of the bulletin boards outside the cafete- ria and changed them every week. A more efficient procedure for electing class officers was developed, and discussions were held concerning the general im- provement of school spirit. The final project and the most enterprising of the year was a volunteer service program covering three areas. These included helping the blind, aiding in nursing homes and in hospitals, and tutoring Weymouth High School students, all of which were enthusiastically supported by the members. Campaigners for school spirit 158 KEYS TO CITIZENSHIP Keys to public service, vocational train- ing for the future, and better citizenship are within the reach of every member of Weymouth High School ' s Key Club. Composed largely of Seniors, this com- munity service organization sponsored by the Kiwanis Club is active in the school and town. The activities conduc- ted during the year under President Steve Butler ' s direction included slave days, car washes, dances, and paper drives, the proceeds of which went into a schol- arship fund. Because of its outstanding service, the Weymouth High School chapter of the Key Club was presented an award from Key Club International, the first award of its kind to be presented to a Weymouth High School organiza- tion. Such functions performed for the benefit of others broaden horizons and aid the boys of the Key Club by giving them experiences as both leaders and followers. The Weymouth High Debate Club develops this ability to prove a point either in the affirmative or nega- tive. This year, the team participated in contests and speech festivals, and made an excellent presentation at all events. The club logged many miles as it travel- ed to Dartmouth, University of New Hampshire, Lynnfield, Shrewsbury, and several local high schools. Jim Dowgi- alo, Russ Davison, and Walter Pearson, all members of the varsity division, have excelled in the art of debating after only two years of training. In order to give sophomores an extra year of experience, Mr. Storms, with the aid of Mr. West, inaugurated a novice sophomore debate group. These students, too, developed the ability to express an idea clearly and convincingly. Ably helping the students in their research are the new li- brarians Mrs. Rita Diment and Miss Fay, and their many student assistants. This year of changes for Weymouth High saw many exciting changes for the library. In addition to completely new surroundings, a thousand new books were added to the shelves and new edi- tions of reference books were made avail- able to the students. The library assist- ants were given the tasks of unpacking, processing, covering and shelving these new books. Although these were time- consuming responsibilities, they were en- grossing, and no one complained of not being able to read the international time clock. Chorale Music is a source of pleasure for people of all ages; it can catch one up in the ex- citement of a parade or give hours of enjoyment to a listening audience with the soft strains of an orchestra or the harmony of a choral group. The Music Department of Weymouth High School has given this same enjoyment to stu- dents and townspeople as it carries out an organized program of music rehear- sals and performances each year. Com- prised of stringed instruments this year, the orchestra hopes to grow with the ad- dition next year of the brass and wood- wind instruments. The musicians of the Band concentrate their major efforts in preparing for graduation, football games and parades which not only bring recognition to the school, but afford par- ticipants opportunities to prove their abil- ities as they try out for district and New England honors. Honors this year went to Priscilla Hodges, Bruce Manuel and Dave Leone who made District, All-State, and New England Competitions; Wil- liam Hodgens, Russell Dexter, and Mar- ian Fredericks, all of whom were contest- ants in the New England Regional Com- petitions. Part of the excitement and color of athletic events is the cheering section. Fortunately for Weymouth High, there is a very active Pep Club which enthusi- astically backs up the cheerleaders at every football game, at home and away. Not believing in the saying, Children should be seen and not heard, this year ' s Pep Club cheered loud and long in their bright maroon sweatshirts. Cheering the loudest was President Linda Gaudreau, who conducted weekly busi- ness meetings during the football season. Because the Pep Club did such a fine job and made a good showing at the games, it was provided with a reserved section at the all-important Thanksgiving foot- ball game. It cannot be doubted that Weymouth ' s improved record this year was due in part to the efforts of this club. Without the enthusiastic encouragement from the stands, our boys could not have gone on to victory. The enthusi- asm and spirit displayed by this year ' s edition of the Pep Club certainly augers well for many seasons to come of suc- cessful student participation in sports.
