Robert Norcross President, W. H. S. Paula Feeney Secretary, W. H. S. Changing Education Ann L. Doucette INCE THE phe nomenal launching of Sputnik, American education has been under excessive scrutiny and criticism. No longer is the interest con- fined to the school or college, but it has become the topic of debate among many who believe that a thorough reorganization of the educational program is necessary for our survival. The program of education in Russia has been most successful, having resulted in the training of young men of unusual genius. There, a far greater percentage of the national income is devoted to education than is applied to the improvement of living conditions. Children have accepted the difficult curricula in a ten-year system because of the exceptional honors given those of trained ability. Only thirty per cent of the ten-year graduates are accepted by the universities where they are trained to become specialists in definite fields. The major factor which led to the phenomenal development of this system was the determination of Russia to achieve superiority over all nations of the world. Until now, it has been accepted that the present system of education in the United States has continuously solved all problems, providing the basic needs ade- quately and in copious fulfillment. President Eisenhower reveals his faith in the schools when he said: Our system of universal education provides a means of developing individual capacities. It strengthens the stamina and value of the in- dividual citizen. It possesses a far greater potential for the future development of America ' s strength than has yet been realized. It is not fair to blame the schools 3 m m 25 for the deficiency in the number of scientists and mathematicians when really the lack of foresight on the part of the government has caused the present emer- gency. Granted that the school curricula should be reorganized to help meet the immediate demands, but there are governmental branches that should have been alert and prepared to avoid such a crisis. Although our education in science and mathematics is unquestionably impor- tant, other studies are equally essential to meet the present-day challenge. So much now lies in the field of human affairs, that the present urgency demands that we strengthen every aspect of that program. As set forth by the Educational Policies Commission: The preservation of democracy, the building of a lasting peace, and the guarantee of respect for the dignity of each human being, all demand an education of such scope and diversity to enable every American child to rise to his own best potential. Really there are four most important points that should be seriously consid- ered for the desired improvement: The teachers of the future should be chosen from the best in their respective fields and provided with the latest equipment. The gifted child should have the opportunity to take special courses to chal- lenge his intelligence. All science courses should be made attractive, even if more difficult, and be introduced to children at an earlier age. The scholarship standards should be securely fixed so that every student wor- thy of aid may receive the necessary financial assistance. In order to remain the superior nation, we must immediately develop a genu- ine respect for the ability of the learned and the unusually brilliant. More must be offered students so that our country will be enabled to cope with the prob- lems of the modern world. If the United States succeeds in the struggle for sur- vival, much will be due to the capabilities of the educational program. Russia has made us realize what concentrated effort for a determined goal can achieve. Since our educational program has always been superior to theirs, certainly, with the same type effort, that superiority can be maintained. The problem that now faces modern education is admirably explained by Oliver J. Caldwell of the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare when he states: The pressure of world affairs on our schools has created a number of new national educational problems. Our schools must prepare our people to play a new role of world leadership — on a new stage which includes the whole world, and to an audience which includes all of mankind. 26 Is Science The Answer? Jluic I lanahury URING THF past years, many critics have deplored the fact that in the United States there hasn ' t been the emphasis on the sciences that they have believed necessary to maintain world prestige. When Russia launched the first satellite, these alarmists rushed to the fore, demanding that we converge all our efforts on the technological aspects of progress. Yet should we not analyze the situation before making rash judgments or planning costly expenditures? It is accepted that any fears of armed aggression by a satellite are unfounded. Dr. Joseph Kaplan, Chairman of the United States National Commitee for the International Geophysical Year, has stated that the launching of the first sat- ellite is comparable to the achievement of nuclear fission. It is his belief that there is certainly no reason to worry about any foreign aggression by means of a satellite. He feels that the ordinary man should consider it an advance that has been successful so far and promises much for the future. Indeed, not only do we have nothing to fear from a satellite, but, according to Dr. John P. Hagen, Director of Project Vanguard, we should hope to gain valuable information in the fields of astronomy and geophysics, much on the make-up of the atmos- phere, and accurate figures for the dimensions of the earth. At this time we cannot help but wonder if Russia has actually surpassed the United States who has ever been the acknowledged leader in the Technological Age. Nov since she has launched such a revolutionary program, should we im- mediately assume that we are hopelessly outdistanced technologically? Undoubt- edly, in this one ph ase of science, Russia has temporarily outstripped us, but that fact does not intimate that we cannot achieve even more and continue to uphold our past position of superiority. It is a conceded fact that Russia is producing more engineers than the United States, but we also know that her economic structure has become weighted with too many. There are just not enough positions open for the number of scientists and engineers trained in Russia each year. In addition, her educational system has become almost entirely unimaginative. In the words of Alexander G. Korol, a Russian-affairs specialist at M.I.T., There seems to be a progressive paralysis of individual initiative which has been spreading through the entire Soviet edu- cational fabric. On the other hand, in the United States we have been able to maintain the delicate economic balance necessary between the technological and the humanitarian. Perhaps we could now increase our emphasis on the sciences slightly, but a complete change would unquestionably be destructive rather than constructive. Therefore, let us demand that our country concentrate on the sciences enough to maintain peace through a balance of power, but only as a temporary meas- ure. At this same time, we should attempt to regain our enthusiasm for the humanities, our desire for peace, and the tolerance for the customs and beliefs of other countries. For if we attain an understanding of the nations of the world; if we can fully realize what problems they face and under what handicaps they labor; then, perhaps, our judgment of these nations will be more accurate. Hence , if the United States can achieve these goals, then no longer will there be any need for a struggle for world supremacy. Every advance by an individual nation will then serve as a step forward for the whole world; it will be a link in unity, binding all nations to peace and serenity. 28 HONOR ROLL HIGH HONORS Katherine Batchelder Eleanor May Blenis Ann Loraine Doucette Ray Thomas Granai Jane Hanabury Cynthia Ellen Johnston Peter Alex Luoma HONORS Susan Emerson Allen Doris Evelyn Hollis Jane Avis Barranco Patricia Louise Jack Joseph Ralph Brigham Eric Ross Johnson James Richard Brown Richard Reino Laine Mary Janet Burke Lois Ann Leavitt Elizabeth Agnes Byberg Nancy Allayne Lee Joan Elizabeth Carroll Patricia Leone George Arthur Christensen Dianne MacKinnon Priscilla Jean Donaldson Richard Blackwell Matson Nancy Elizabeth Elliott Mary Patricia O ' Connell Susan Deretha Elms Judith Gail O ' Neill Paula Feeney Diane Marian Pannier Marilyn Lesley Fulton Pamela Jeanne Pray Janet Elaine Garofalo Paul Edmund Robitaille Robert Weston Gill Kaye Elaine Saraceno Kenneth Arthur Hawes Carol Ellen Tonsing William Carroll Hay Thomas Francis Winkler Joan Elaine Hollander Sheila Ann Woodworth 30 RUSSELL AHEARN Russ East Weymouth Carpenter Birthday: March 12, 1940 Pastime: Sports Honors 11; Student Council 11, 12; Student Marshal 11, 12; Open House 10; Senior Play 1 I . The 1958 REFLECTOR staff has had a very successful year. Many changes took place under the guidance of Miss Andem, Miss Silvester, and Mr. Collins. The size of the REFLECTOR was in- creased to that of the Yearbook. Obliga- tory REFLECTOR assignments were abolished, and the staff solicited much of its material directly from the student body. Pupils who like to write provided more poems, stories, essays, and puzzles than could be used. The seniors were re- sponsible for the Christmas issue; the juniors, for the St. Patrick ' s Day issue; and the sophomores, for the Graduation issue. THE JUNIOR STAFF. In its second year the Math Club was once again active and successful. Thanks and appreciation go to Mr. Raymond, the Advisor, whose ability and imagination have much to do with the success of the club. This year members busied themselves with several aspects of mathematics that are not included in the ordinary textbook course. Natur- ally the advent of Sputnik provided some interest- ing observations and often members departed from a meeting, their heads awhirl with the intricacies of the binomial system or the almost impossible number puzzles. Bean Post Number 401 and Wey- mouth Post Number 79. The winners, Francis Ang- lin and Patricia Jack, were selected from the six semi-finalists. Francis spoke on the Constitution as The Greatest Experiment and Patricia com- pared our country to an orchestra in which each person must play his part or bring discord into ! The Unfinished Symphony, our nation ' s history. Other semi-finalists were Katherine Batchelder, Nancy Lee, Richard Osgood, and William Salis- bury. With the aid of Mr. William Kearns and Mr. William Longridge, each contestant wrote and de- livered an oration worthy of praise. Patricia Jack brought honor to her school by placing second in the district contest. Congratula- tions! Mr. Longridge, the coach, congratulates one winner, Patricia Jack. Spanish Club met the second Wednesday of every month. Being in earnest about learning the language, dub members always conducted their business meetings entirely in Spanish. Such a practice gives good experience in listening, interpreting, and speak- ing. Some of t ' ic highlights of the year included a vocabulary game in Spanish, the Christmas partv with the traditional pinata, and a talk by the student teacher, Miss Keefe, who dis- cussed the possible vocations a Spanish language students may enter. Thanks to the advisers, Mrs. Derry and Mrs. Bedell, the club enjoyed an active, successful year. BREAKING THE PINATA. Left to right: Judith Kelley, Cynthia Carlson, Donna Belcher, Mary Ellen Grant, Cynthia Johnston. 9 FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS fblE OFFICERS: Joan Cirigliano, President; Patricia Bowman and Lois MacLeod, Vice-Presidents; Geraldine Osborn, Secretary; Elizabeth Schauer, Treasurer. This year the business club has enter- tained a twofold purpose: to help its members ( 1 ) develop a knowledge of business world and ( 2 ) decide what phase of business they would like to en- ter. Under the direction of Miss Dorothy MacGregor, Adviser, programs were planned with these goals in mind. Club members enjoyed visits from represent- atives of various businesses who ex- plained the many different facets of their particular fields. Among these speakers was a representative from the telephone company, an insurance firm, a bank, and a radio station. Lett to right: (seated) Lawraine Fall; Miss D. Under the direction of Miss Pear- son club members developed their year ' s program around a basic theme: the teacher ' s role in passing down cul- ture to each generation. The club en- joyed many interesting speakers. Mrs. Elliott spoke on first grade teaching. Mr. Nelson explained methods of teaching in the field of agriculture. Miss (iall.mi found tunc in her bllSV schedule to describe the rewards and pitfalls of teaching in general. And Miss MrGovern explained just exactly how to put your subject across. The purpose of this club is to stimulate interest in the nursing pro- fession. Under the expert leadership of Miss Stockwell, Adviser, and an excellent slate of officers, Future Nurses enjoyed an inspiring and successful year. Guest speakers in- cluded student nurses, a visiting teacher, and an African missionary nurse. Field trips to nearby hos- pitals were enlightening. (jQ)N THE snowy weekend of March twenty-first everyone at Weymouth High was happy to learn that Kitty Drake (Jackie Query) and her cousin Adele Warren (Janice Ingham) had inherited their uncle ' s dude ranch at Cross Road Canyon, Co lorado. Being impetuous, Kitty left her job and took the first bus West. How discouraged she was when she arrived at the defunct ranch! But Kitty had an idea — if only she could get some capital to repair her ranch. At this point she met Carleton Up de Graff (Keith Larson) who, being a banker ' s son, was the perfect foil for Kitty ' s enterprise. With an adequate loan from Bramwell Up de Graffs ' s (Bruce Avery ' s) bank, using Carleton ' s name as a co-signer on the note, she turned her inheritance into the attractive Uranium Dude Ranch. Al- though Custer Henshaw (Robert Minnis) , the sheriff, declared Kitty ' s advertising brochures illegal, an ad in the papers attracted three young girls, Jane Arnold (Patricia Jack), Mary Cooper (Sheila Natale), Helen Kruger (Roberta Nicholson), and Harriet Baker (Mary Ann Santacroce) , who was on a husband-hunting expedition. Life was looking brighter as Tullina L ' Amour (Joyce Seeley), a TV actress, and her director, Kent Tyler (Robert Norcross), made reservations. Suddenly Bram- well Up de Graff stormed in, accused Kitty of forcing his son to sign the note and declared the ranch would be foreclosed if Kitty couldn ' t raise the money by Monday. It took some clever planning on Kitty ' s part to wiggle out of this dilemma. Burt Holbrook (Rogers Chase) and Bob Granger (William Fairbanks) found themselves involved along with Big Wind (Rus- sell Ritchie) , and Starlight (Jacqueline Booth) , his squaw. Millie Fisher (Joan Carroll) , the cook, and Clem Wagner (Donald Cody), coachman, groom, and handyman, contributed to the merriment. Wel- come visitors from Weymouth were Jack Smith and members of his orchestra: Jack Costa, Walter Heffernan, Karl Klasson, and George Peterson. Laura Hunter (Nancy Lee) contributed to the fun. All ' s well that ends well! and a surprising climax brought howls of laughter from the audience and applause well earned by the young Weymouth actors. LAB ASSISTANTS, O.I. G.Y. 3 HE MAINSTAYS of all our science courses are our lab assistants. P P EYMOUTH HIGH is thankful to the A. V. Club for its many skilled operators of the audio-visual equipment. We found our classes and extra-curricular activities made more interesting and varied through motion pictures, film strips, records, and tape recordings; and we know that no assembly or dance was ever held without at least one A. V. member in the back- ground. This year the club was headed by two seniors, Roy Eaton and Dave Mahn, both of whom have been in A. V. work since junior high. All three groups, the orch- estra and chorus under Mr. Jack ' s direc- tion, and the band under Mr. Warren ' s direction, met five days a week. The band was especially busy during the football season, drilling for its weekly exhibition. The chorus performed at the Christmas assembly. Both band and orch- estra found time to participate in various parades and festivals during the school year. Members from all three groups attended the Massachusetts All State Festival and the New England Music Festival, wonderful experiences both musically and socially. Boys electing this course gain invaluable experience in preparation for various agricultural pursuits eventually majoring in one area of their choice. During the school year they study the care of plants and livestock; and during the summer months they work in nurseries or on farms throughout New England. The summer job is an integral part of the agriculture program, for advisers visit and grade the boys on their summer work. Mr. Clifford Cottrell, instructor at Norfolk County Agricultural School, conducts the tractor driving test. Seated on tractor: Richard Jones. Observing: James Gaffney. Here future mechanics are trained in all phases of automobile repair. They learn how to spot trouble quickly and how best to correct the difficulty once it has been diagnosed. The steady stream of satisfied customers waiting for service provides the boys with ample op- portunity to put their theory into practice. Their course of study includes also an ex- amination of the newest developments and improvements in engine design. Mr. Marshman and Michael Bermingham hunt for the trouble. WHAT ' S UNDER THE HOOD! This work prepares the boys in the more important phases of their voca- tion and will enable them to become skilled members of the sheet metal indus- try. This shop is the busiest spot in the Weymouth school system, bar none! Young printers pro- duce the REFLECTOR, the Yearbook, a mul- titudinous number of tickets, posters, bro- chures, and handle virtually all the printing required by the Superintendent ' s Office. We of the Yearbook staff would especially like to thank the boys of the Printing Depart- ment for the work they have done on this year ' s issue. Herbert Webster assembles type before casting in — ludlow. 117 CABINETMAKING EYE the work of our Cabinet Making Shop is a pleasure. Students here turn out products that are skillfully built and carefully finished. Some boys construct furniture for the house being built by the carpentry stu- dents. Others fill orders of various types that come in from the schools. Thus a variety of jobs provide these students with an excellent background for their chosen vocation of cab- inet making. Mr. Dwyer and Edward Rowell check the clamps on the table. Robert Gill demonstrates how one glazes the curved windshield of a boat. A door incorrectly fitted is forever a problem! Nick DeToma and William Hay work on the fan shaped window. Measurement has to be exact in cabinet making. David Barry checks a measurement. US CARPENTRY ]£ACH YEAR students in the carpentry course at Weymouth Vocational School construct a house from the foundation up. In the course of this con- struction, each boy learns the ins and outs of building every part of the house. This is training that teaches him many tricks of the trade. With the detail and care that building this house entails it is certain that no boy who participates will be unprepared for his future as a carpenter. As we stand before Thee and the world, assembled together for the last time, on this, our Graduation Day, may we never forget that all that we are and have we owe to Thee. Help us to know that Thou will always stand beside us wherever we may be. Help us to help ourselves throughout every moment o f our lives. We give Thee thanks, Gracious Father, for the numerous opportunities that have been presented to us. May we truly appreciate Thy gifts. In the midst of all our plans and activities, make us realize that without Thy guidance all would be in vain. As we walk along life ' s road, help us not to fall by the wayside because dif ficulties seem to overwhelm us. May we know that we have only to lift our eyes heavenward, utter a silent prayer, and continue to strive for the right, for Thou will always answer. We thank Thee, too, for our years at Weymouth High School. May we remem- ber in the years to come the many times we passed our beloved Cross of Gray and the pleasant hours we have spent und.r the protection of its shadow. Cleanse our hearts of any grudges we may hold so that we shall star t out on the road ahead with light hearts and open minds. And be it Thy will.
