I he I ' nitcd Stales is somewhat handicapped by the present period ol ultra-nationalism and anti-American ism which some- nations arc experiencing. According to M u x. Lenin, and their followers, our system of cap- italism works toward enriching the- Wall Street capi- talists and impoverishing the common man. thus creating (lass strife. Such propaganda has been spread effectively throughout the world. Since World War II. however, America has developed a vigorous policy ol containing Russian imperialism within its present boundaries, and ol a more favorable power balance, even at the risk ol actual war. Our policy can be de- scribed as being threefold. In the first place, financial aid was furnished to countries impover- ished b the war, and to under-developed areas. Although intended to help less fortunate parts of the world, this material aid took on a new light as the dangers of Communism became apparent. Since Commu- nism festers among a hungry people, the programs to pay for much needed food and machinery, such as the Marshall Plan and Point Four were diplomatic master strokes. By far the most effective contribution of the American people has been CARE packages. These gifts of food and clothing more than appeased hunger and want; they spread inter- national good will and understanding, both increasingly vital factors for western unity. Never before has the world seen stub generosity to- ward friend and foe. Next, by open declaration, the true motives of Russian imperialism were acknowledged. In response to this, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was set up in 1949, establishing a definite pattern of con- tainment. Despite Russia ' s cries of indignation, western countries had decided that armed unity was essential in order to safeguard peace. The surprise attack by North Korea and the rapid action of President Truman and the United Nations convinced both East and West that future aggression would be repelled immediately. Again generosity; but given this time was precious blood. The third and most recent development of policy is the New Look of President Eisenhower. The most notable aspect has been its great reli ance and concentration on air offensive and the use of atomic and hy- drogen weapons. Instant retaliation with these weapons is felt the best security against surprise attack. Surface-to-air rockets are being placed about important cities, prepared to search out and destroy enemy air- craft before they reach their target. At first glance, the dependence on large weapons would seem to commit us either to a full-scale-war, if another Korea should break out. or to a policy of non-intervention and isolation. Actually, the United States is striving to arm the natives of threatened countries, as in Pakistan, or is sending material and men with technical knowledge, as in Indo-China. that the peoples themselves might better divert and repel aggression. However, even though it is not altogether impossible for these two systems, Soviet Communism and the Eree World, to live together peace- fully, tension between them may not be relieved for some time. Since containment was instituted as a stop-gap measure, and not as a final policy, it behooves our generation to find and develop a far-reaching, constructive policy; one which all peoples will choose too follow, one that recognizes the fact that freedom is indivisible and that a threat to freedom anywhere in the world by any force whatsoever is a threat to free people everywhere. Statisticians have estimated that there are oxer thirty and a hall million boys and girls in the country, aged five to seventeen. During the ten-year period between 1950-1960, a quota of 800.000 new teachers will be required to handle the increased enrollment and to replace those who have retired from the sen ice. A much larger enrollment is. indeed, noticeable in our town, where three new schools have already been built, sev- eral alterations made in the old buildings, and two new schools are now under construction. Great responsibility rests upon the teacher, as it does on the entire school personnel. Young people must be trained to think, moral princi- ples must be emphasized, and proper attitudes must be instilled, in order to insure a safe future for our nation. All this represents a challenge, and many teachers of high character and nobility of nature are needed in order that it may be met. There are few occupations in American life which, for the next gen- eration, will offer greater professional rewards or greater economic oppor- tunity than does teaching. On the whole, opportunities for the well- trained, well-qualified teacher never looked brighter. One particular ad- vantage is the wide variety of choice a teacher has in practicing her voca- tion. She may select a special subject at a certain grade level. Then. too. she is protected by tenure laws, sick-leave arrangements, and retirement with pension. The teacher ' s working conditions and environment are regularly pleasant. Her associates are interesting, intelligent people, often highly talented. While the day may be lengthened by extra- curricular activities, nevertheless, the actual working hours compare favorably with the time spent in other fields. There are many unique opportunities for intellec tual advancement; likewise, the summer vaca- tion affords the chance lor travel, relaxation, and further study in many colleges offering an extensive plan of summer study. Teaching lias always been a relatively stable occupation, in comparison with many vocations where slack time is common. Even during wars and depressions, few teachers ever lose their positions. Those employed in other occupations have reason to envy the teacher witli a year-round position, certain income, and vacation periods. A young man or woman who enters teaching enters a career that off ers all of the freshness, vitality, and challenge of a rapidly developing profession. Certainly, teaching is a vocation that has always rendered a high order of service to the world since the very beginning of mankind. Some of the noblest of the ages have been members of this profession; among them Confucius, Socrates. Aristotle, and the greatest of all. the Saviour of the World. It seems that, with the advancement of time, the profession becomes increasingly important because of the absolute necessity of an education for everyone, in order to confront the problems of our modern world. Even the average layman finds medicine l vital interest, because it affects his life so Favorably. In the last hall century, twenty years have- hec-n added to the life expectancy ,,! an individual; hence today there is inevitably wider attention and more intensive research Eocused on diseases affecting older people. The branch of medicine dealing with the heart, the most vital l all organs, has not yet been completely mastered. In recent years, however, the task of conquer- ing this affliction has made rapid strides. Among the pioneers of this Frontier of medicine was Dr. Eliot C.mler of Harvard, assisted by Dr. Samuel A. Levine, an eminent cardiologist, who in the 1920 ' s endeavored to bring surgical relief to those suffering from a rheu- matic heart. More work ol this type was undertaken in 1948 by Dr. Horace Smithy of the Medical College of South Carolina, who designed an especially adapted instrument for operation on the mitral valve. Since lhat time, much progress has been made. Doc tors now are able to transplant arteries which they obtain from the so-called ' artery banks. ' ' Most astounding work has been accomplished with blue babies by Dr. Robert Gross, chief surgeon of the Boston Children ' s Hospital. Even plastic fixtures are being applied to the human body. Greatest of all these achievements is the mechanical heart-lung apparatus, developed by Dr. John H. Gibbon at Harvard Medical School. It allows many of the most seriously affected to undergo otherwise impossible surgery. The work being done is a forecast of the future, giving promise that some da heart disease will not take such a toll of humanity. Cancer, next only to heart disease as a cause of mortality in this country, has annually cost the lives of nearly one million Americans. With the advent of newly developed beneficial treatment, the American Cancer Society estimates that now seventy thousand patients are being saved each year. Contributions from private and public or- ganizations have made possible improved teac hing of cancer knowledge in tiie medical schools. One of the first cancer institutes where scientists and physicians tackle the job as a team is the Memorial Hospital in New York, founded in 1 8S4 and recently broadened by the addition of the Sloan-Kcttering Institute for Cancer Research. There are many such institutes, where laboratory knowledge can be quickly applied to the patient. Better and bolder surgery is being performed because of the aid of antibiotics, greatly improved anesthetics, and more liberal supplies of blood and plasma. At Johns Hopkins Hospital. Baltimore. X-Ray cameras basically similar to the astronomer ' s Schmidt camera, are proving successful in detection and treatment. Dr. Charles Huggins. President of the American Association for Cancer Research, has experimented successfully with hormones and. though cautious and conservative, he cannot fail to show his enthusiasm. Because of the many detection centres, the co-operation of the public is combined with the efforts of doctors in winning the fight against this scourge. From the brief discussion of two great achievements in modern medicine, we can gain some idea of what to expect of this profession, in the future. Our doctors and researchers, continually marching on the road of progress, inspired both by hope and by the thought of achieve- ment. will never falter. Neither must we falter, we who are the reason for their unceasing endeavors. The duty is ours, but the results rest with God, who alone can inspire men with such great devotion to the cause of bettering humanity. We salute that department. III CHOIR The Choir, under the leadership of Mr. Jack, has been moulded into the finest blending of voices Weymouth High has ever heard. We certainly have enjoyed them at their annual concerts and festivals. ■ YEARBOOK STAFF AND POLICY COMMITTEE For die first time, there has been a group assigned to the special task of producing the yearbook; later a committee to help them was elected. This experiment has borne fruit in the many original ideas and changes in our book. We thank this stafF for all their hard work and enterprise. 1 V 1 87 VOCATIONAL SCHOOL The l)o s who take carpentry built a six-room house and the new track on Libby Field. The heating system of the horse was made by the sheet-metal workers and the dining set was constructed by the cabinet makers. The boys did a fine job on the whole house. In our print-shop the printing of the yearbooks and Re- flectors, and also several programs lor different schools was done. Main new machines have been added to the auto shop in which much general repair work and painting have been done by the boys. Alter the boys graduate from Wey- mouth Vocational School, the) are prepared to do a good job wherever they go. Mr. Harold Nel- son ' s group built a lean-to greenhouse in Weymouth. The hoys won several medals at Brockton Fair for their team in dairy-cattle judging. The whole group took a trip to Sturbridge Vil- lage, in relerence to American and Agriculture history. The senior class attended the Union Agric ulture Meet ing in Worcester; later, there was an outing at Scituate. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS Any girl may become ;i library assistant, nuclei the direction ot Miss Gloster. These girls learn the main ways in which the library is run and how to help students and teachers find anv desired material. LABORATORY ASSISTANTS The laboratory assistants, with their dili- gent work, have helped the physics and chemistry classes in laboratory experiments by having the necessary equipment ready. The purpose oi the club is to encourage more girls to be America ' s Future Nurses . SPANISH CLUB Again the Spanish Club had a successful year.
