Isaiah, one of the wisest, expressed his lofty vision of a | eateful and united world in the prophetic message that foretold that the time would tome when: Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war any more. Toelav we arc still grasping for that precious gift of peace and looking forward to the lullfillmcnt of that ancient promise. The centuries that pan the generations between Biblical times auu the mod- ern dav have seen many phenomenal accomplishments in a constantly changing world. Man has achieved virtual miracles in every conceivable field. Travel has increased from nomadic wanderings of pastoral tribes to flights that cir- cumvent the globe in a matter of hours. Science and medicine have advanced from inaccurate philosophical reasonings to vast programs of research and stuch. which toda) have raised the health standards on every continent. Mechanical devices ol almost miraculous advancement have released the body from physical enslavement, giving man a much freer, easier life — a life that grants him opportunity to create and enjoy new comforts and luxuries. Vet for all these concrete examples of unparalleled progress and success, discovered and invented over vears of struggle and privation, and culminating in our advanced and cultural world ol today, we have not yet found the needed essence to create universal peace, although dictators and evil leaders have ever been combatted. Somewhere, somehow, a link has slip|jecl: we have failed in our duty; in some wav we have been blind to our obligations and have not grasped our opportunities. In the contused complexitv of life we have stressed material progress over all else. The status of a nation is determined by the size of its armies and bv the machines of war and destruction: individual power and prestige, by the extent of a person ' s bankroll and property. Indeed, it seems as though the fault lies in the warped set of standards by which we live. Abstract qualities of justice and equalitv can do more to set the course of destiny dian any human conception. If we wish to attain true peace for all Page Fifty-tuo people, we must acknowledge that patience, kindliness, and fortitude are the motivating forces behind man ' s advance; and that love and faith can lead people from the path of error to that of righteous action by fanning the spark of Divine Presence within them. We need to turn our minds from the dictates of our imperfect world and seek spiritual guidance. Man ' s code for peace in- volves great armies and navies, extensive fortifications, huge sums of money, and the sacrifice of innumerable lives; while the code of God is to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. How much more simple and perfect is the way of the Almighty. How flawlessly patterned to envelop all His children, regardless of nationality or creed. We have gained much over the centuries; a wiser world has conquered man) far-reaching horizons. Distant lands have become close neighbors as more extensive invention has enabled nations to transcend physical barriers. Still we have not yet realized that true and lasting peace prophesied for the world, because nation has not yet learned how to live peaceably with nation in the complete harmony of justice and understanding. Not until we have learned to practise God ' s teachings shall war be eliminated and shall we experience true peace that will enable all nations to be as a rainbow, reflecting beauty and blending the world together in the light of God. Page Fifty-three HIGH HONOR ESSAY AMERICA at the CROSSROADS Robert Morrison Delahunt TPime continues in its stead) march— a march ol progress, it is called, improving the world in many different ways, but always leaving behind many un- solved problems, problems seemingly far greater than those of our inheritance. At present, we might say that there are three vital crossroads leading to a world peace, but each has its impediments. The first of these roads is the one leading to Europe, where a primary obstacle is encountered. After World War I the Allies established Germany as an independent republic, believing that a country, so impoverished, would never again use its power to jeopardi e the world. No one was ever more disillusioned; within the space of twenty years, German) seized the sword of aggression and began the invasion of the Baltic countries. In 1915, we again conquered Germany; once more the problem of governing the vanquished power arose. Then it was agreed to divide the country into sectors among the Allies, the result being the creation of a situation ol serious consequence. East Germany, itself a small country, has replaced Na iism with Communism. The rest of the satellite countries are being racked by the scourge ol Red domination and, as a result, many border troubles have arisen. Behind most of these struggles is Russia, whose success today is attributed chiefly to the fac t that the prevail- ing economic conditions after World War II compelled many nations to accept her leadership. The second crossroad leads to Asia where an unusually serious hindrance is present. We had once conquered the North Koreans, but we are being con- fronted by a new and grave threat, as hordes of Chinese Reds pour across the Manchurian border to aid the rapidly disintegrating North Korean army. Other incidents have occurred in French Indo-China, where, alter six years ol fighting the native Communists, the French have withdrawn their forces, despite the lact that the United States has granted them millions ol dollars in aid. We wonder if we should make father allotments, which, in the past have been seemingly ill spent. In Japan another crisis is foreboding. The United States has re-established the industrial potential ol that country, but the big businessmen in America have, through political influence, clamped protective tariffs on Japanese goods. As a result, with whom can Japan trade? The one and only logical answer is Page Fifty-four Russia or Communistic China. II this should come about, there is no doubt that in the Euture more and frequeni Korean-type situations will arise. The remaining crossroad, to my mind, conducts us to America, the onh one ol the major powers in World War II that was Free from hostile attack. The people ol America were spared the ravages of disease, hunger, devastation, and despair which afflicted millions in the countries of the Old World. Being the richest and most powerful of all nations, she has the resources to lead the inauguration of an era ol peace. We are ashamed to say, however, thai the manifestation of corrupt policies practised by our government officials shows to what a low ebb the ethics of many in important positions have been lowered. We all should be faithful in the practice of economy, industry, and honesty, so that we shall be going forward toward the fulfillment of the ideals ol out founding lathers, who set up the principles of collect living and honest enter- prise. These three problems — that of our affairs in Europe, the Korean situation, and the dishonesty in trade and government within our own country — are not the only barriers impeding our advance, but are probably the most significant. As primitive man began to develop, he constantl) sought wavs of improving living conditions In utilizing all resources. From earliest times natural r aw materials have been used to build shelters, secure warmth, and provide weapons to encounter any threat to existence. Early inventions, such as the wheel, enabled man to travel, thus allowing a better acquaintance with people and surroundings. Progress, however, gave birth to numerous problems, the- solution ol which could be found only by additional invention. Marked advance was made ' not only in material, but also in mental development. Soon the art ol writing was introduced, making possible recorded history. Then barbarian civilizations gave way to the more cultured Graeco-Roman period, when ethics began to undergo definite changes. Although seemingly crude attempts at democracy, the Greek City States and Roman Republic were the first experiments ol a people ' s government. During this time, despite the persecutions ol an expanding empire, Christianity was founded. Trade, art. and literature all took a firm looting, but their influence was impaired bv the general decline of morals. From the collapse of the Roman Empire to the modem era. the so-called Western World experienced a pe riod oi complete disinterest in ulture, commonl) referred to as the Dark Ages. No noticeable steps foward were made in this interval ol six hundred years until late in the period, when the Roman legal eode. the foundation of modern jurisprudence, was first taken into consider- ation. The Renaissance, the rebirth of interest in art and learning, was a time of discovery, producing such great men as DaVinci, Galileo, Vesalius, Copernicus, and. later, Newton, whose inventions and theories fill the pages of medieval history. Page • ijty-six Shortly alter the discovery ol America, the Reformation. begun In Martin Luther, resulted in the long series of religious wars, producing many significant changes in Europe. The rise oi modern science and philosophy caused a rapid growth which led to a period ol exploration, ending in the founding ol the New World. Having profited by the mistakes ol her mother countries, the United Slates has grown miraculously, now claiming world supremacy and leadership. At present, it appears that modern man. with such a fund of knowledge, has overstepped his sphere ol control. Recent products of his mind, nameh the atomic weapons and bacterial warfare, are possible means of destroying ever) advancement. Although successful in increasing life span to an almost unbeliev- able length, the scientist ol today is unable to halt the wars and threats of war which constantly interrupt his work. Man cannot change the ultimate destiny of the world. He may build cities and destroy them, yet the late ol the universe lies with the Creator. God does not wish to see man perish; therefore we may look forward with faith and courage. Before us are the same type ol problems which have laced American youth tor many years. God has watched over all and. with His aid, the world has ever settled the most serious difficulties. Reflector Staff he past year of Reflector publication has seen many innovations in the style and arrangement oi material, especially in this final yearbook issue. The staff, with the tireless co-operation and support ol the faculty advisers, has attempted to bring a more informal edition to the student body. In January, all Reflector departments combined efforts to be a gracious host to the second annual meeting of the Southeastern Massachusetts League of School Publications. Members also enjoyed attending the Globe Press conferences, espcciallv the one at which Taft and Kefauver addressed the group. We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the advisers and students alike, who have made our Reflector magazine successful. rjpus past year the Student Council has been active in improving Weymouth High School for the pupils. Besides organizing the fire- drill squad, and keeping the lunch room in order, they have sponsored the Halloween and Victory Dances. Members worked with the faculty and cheerleaders to present a number of varied assemblies throughout the year. The sale of book covers and class pins was also managed by council members. Delegates and representatives attended both the Fall and Spring Conventions of the Southeastern Branch of Associated Bodies of Student Councils of Massachusetts. With the co-operation the student body has given us, we are sure the Student Council mem- bers of the year 1952-1953 will have a successful term of office. The four contestants selected for the district competition were Carolyn Holbrook, James MacLeish. John Saloina. and Joan W illiams. In a close contest John Saloma was judged the winner, with Joan Williams chosen as alternate. i.i. good books are interesting. The Library Club enjoys charg- ing and shelving books, arranging bulletins and exhibits, and performing all duties that give service to the school. r JpHE Laboratory Assistants have done an excellent job of taking care oi the third-floor science department. Besides their ordinary tasks of keeping the lab in order, cleaning used equipment, and refilling supplies, the boys have succeeded in keeping order during the confusion prior to the climax of a year ' s work, the Science Fair. TPms year the Spanish Club has been very successful. Some of the programs consisting of movies of the Mediterranean, an enjoyable Christmas party, a celebration of Pan-American Day, and various skits by the club members. The club concluded its activities with a picnic — a perfect ending for a perfect year in the Spanish Club. Laboratory Assistants Spanish Club 1 •II t l J is one Future Farmers of America he Weymouth Chapter of Future Farmers of America link in a national chain ol boys who intend to farm lor a living. We train lor leadership and respect. A well-rounded program ol self-leadership includes sports, speaking contests, judging contests, parliamentary law, scholarship, and farm skill training. Pleasant memories, such as certain hot dog roasts, are good to reflect upon during our more serious moments on the farm. As seniors, some of us are no longer future farmers, but active farmers following our creed: I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining: in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so — for others as well as myself. TP HE I i i ' Club is a new ly inaugurated organization, formed for the purpose of increasing school spirit. Under the guidance of Mr. Stuart, the group has become one of the most active of school clubs. They have planned many beneficial rallies and have given teams well-deserved support in their important games. Tr. Paul Cleaves has led the Audio-Visual Club to another success- ful season of bringing educational entertainment to the pupils through the medium of motion pictures and other audio-visual aids. The club members, trained in the operation ot these machines, are certainly part of a worthy club. Pep Club Audio-Visual Club Cheerleaders TThi maroon and gold uniforms l our peppy cheerleaders have been seen at every rally, football, and basketball game. As our teams have maintained their top ratings, so have these girls kepi their superior record. The squad is composed ol co-captains Joan W illiams and Natalie Loud, Barbara Barton, Mary- Jane Mahoney, Elizabeth Marin, jean Ri o, Helen McGonnigal, Roberta Spain, Lorraine Brady, with substitutes Marilyn Lewis, Nancy Burns, Gloria Wheeler, and Carolyn Pitts. You make the touchdown; we ' ll make the noise. 1 1 1 ■ I 61 ' eymouth achieved its second successive Class-A Champion- ship this year, under the direction of Coach Arlanson, with co-captains Robert Jacobson and Dorick Mauro. Our coach has moulded another club of which the school may be well proud. Working along, hand in hand with the players, were the man- agers, who comprise an essential part of every successful team. There were no easily won games on the 1951 schedule, since many new teams, such as Greenfield, had been added to the agenda. The picture at the lower right clearly illustrates the re- sult of hard-fought decisions and the- heart-broken feelings that our opponents experienced. Footb H 4 Basketball Vjach Whitmore ' s first vear as head coach was certainly a successful one, since the basketball team achieved its goal of competing in the Class B Tourney tor the second consecutive year. The first game of the Tech Tourney was played against Winchester. For three periods the score swayed back and forth, until Weymouth finally dominated the play to win by seven points. The semi-finals approached and Weymouth was matched with a more experienced and undefeated team from Fairhaven. In this game, fouls deleated Weymouth ' s cause and Fairhaven won by eleven points. Next year ' s team can look forward to an even brighter future, because many regulars and jayvees are returning. eymouth certainly fulfilled all expectations, a comparatively inexperienced track team overshadowing mam a rival ol superior speed and stamina. The success can be credited to Mr. Page, who combined stars like Bill Trudell, ' Duke Murphy, and Dave Settele with the other speed me n to create a well-balanced out- fit. The final test of merit was proved by the excellent showing at both the Boston Garden Meet, and the State Meet. This year ' s team showed itself to be as noteworthy as those of past years. Track Cross-Country WA Baseball l i v.xkii TH has produced many exceptional baseball teams, proving that the school does not excel in the sport of football alone. The 1951 baseball team was a credit to the school, since it was chosen to enter the State Baseball Tourney, at Braves Field. At the midway mark of the current baseball season, Weymouth is at the moment undefeated, with a six and nothing record. With a tight defence, clutch hitters, and a formidable pitching staff, much is expected during the latter part of the season. This year ' s team, under the instruction of Coaches Arlanson and Hayes, is one of the best and leaves behind it a challenge to those teams that will follow. t long last, girls taking part in extra-curricular sports activities have received recognition of their achievements. This winter the girls ' basketball team played an exciting game with girls from Wood- ward School and came out victors. Girls interested in participating in field hockey, basketball, volley-ball, badminton, or softball will find their time well spent in the company of excellent instructors and friendly companions. Their efforts will also be rewarded, as numerals are awarded to those who have earned an adequate number of points through individual team standing; and once these are achieved, a school letter and star are goals for which to strive. Girls 1 Sports Band is one of the most active musical groups in the high school. All ot the forty members have shown much enthusiasm over their busy schedule and have enjoyed the rehearsals, w hich are held at least twice a week. Mr. Jack, the leader, has united the various sections of the Band into one group to make a creditable showing at the State- Festival at Middleboro. Besides playing serious music and competing lor prizes, the group enjo s many good times. These occasions take place when they help supplement the stands at football games, enter- tain the fans at hall-time with difficult formations, and also lend support and noise to the basketball team when they compete in the Boston Garden tournaments. A busy year has been completed. TpHE Choir is a particularly popular division of the Music Depart- ment. It seems to appeal mostly to the girls, however; the members are most eager to add a few more male voices to the group. During the year, Mr. Jack has skillfully managed to choose songs which would provide training for young voices, besides excellent entertainment. At the annual concerts, the Choir performed well before an apprecia- tive audience. Another activity that gives pleasure to every member is the opportunity to attend the annual State Festival, being held at Middleboro. Leadership and co-operation, the most important factors in forming a harmonious group, are more than evident this year. Orchestra TThe Weymouth High School Orchestra has completed the 1952 season with notable achievement. The members are a hard-work- ing group, their merits being measured in quality, not quantity. The string section is perhaps the most greatly improved, since its members were fortunate in securing as their instructor, Dr. Boranoff, who is music instructor at Boston University and Columbia University, Each section has worked as a unit to form a finished product ol which any school might be proud. Mr. Jack has presented his musicians at both Winter and Spring Concerts, where they received enthusiastic re- sponse. The State Music Festival at Mitldleboro was a further test of their skill. [other is a Freshman was a delightful, romantic comedy in three acts presented by the Senior Class of Weymouth High School, under the direction of Miss Edna Flaherty, on Wednesday, February 6 and Friday, February 8. The cast included: Nancy O ' Neil, Stuart Hemingway, Marilyn Smith, Anna Murphy, Veola Humphries, Carol Trueman, Frances Perry, Margaret Reap, Louise Cicchese, Susan Atwood, William Cicchese, Robert facobson, George Matson, Peter Bisognano, and John Saloma, while Carolyn Holbrook was Book Holder. The play proved to be a huge success as was evidenced by the fact that it was a sell-out for both performances. The story was based on typical college life and appealed to both young and old.
