WHS-State Champions The Wetumpka Varsity Cheerleaders attended the AHSAA Cheerleading Clinic at the University of Alabama in July of '84. They were awarded one white, one red, and two blue ribbons during daily competition, and won first place in the pep rally. A tough, versatile Demopolis football team came roaring into Hohenberg Field in Quarterfinal play for Class 5A. They would put all hopes of the Indians winning a State championship to rest. The Demopolis Tigers got on the scoreboard first after taking the opening kick-off and driving 69 yards to score. In the second quarter, Demopolis scored on a 19 yard pass from Basil to Kinsler, making the score 19-O. The Indians came out in the second half and drove the ball 59 yards with Keith Peevy scoring from the one on a sneak. After holding the Tigers for two plays, Kinsler raced 75 yards leading to another Demopolis score. The Tigers would score one more time before the Indians added their final points. Stanley Taylor scored the final TD, ending the '84 season.
