PRESENTING MR. GEHRKE HIS year our feelings and emotions are more tender, than eve T before because, as the tempo of the battle increases, the los of loved ones comes ever nearer our homes. lt is only fittinq 'Q and proper that our school annual this year be dedicated to th Boys in Service. For this thought and the fine work which i evident throughout this yearbook, the administration extend thanks for long hours of work well done. The endless attempt t produce each year a better product of workmanship is evident ii this yearbook and is a tribute to the sponsor and the staff for resolution fully attained. The school year l943-44 marks a turning point in the histor of Westwood High School for various reasons. The school is th largest in its history and the new rooms and new equipment, a well as new departments, are accomplishments which testify t what can be accomplished when pupils and the school staff an administration pull together in one common aim: Always a bette school for Westwood. All groups involved can feel justly proud of their accomplishments since it has evokef the admiration of neighboring schools as well as high state officials. For pulling together in a common cause there has not been a more unifying goal than our school theme Rebuilding America Through Our Schools. ln this aim we as a school have rededicated ourselves to the a important task of re-establishing in the minds of our students the funadmentals of American government tha have made this the greatest nation on earth. We disagree with the dictators throughout the world who founi their following in youth which was based upon false philosophies. ln directing our attention to such found ing fathers as Washington, Jefferson, Jackson, and Lincoln we search for the acts of these men and the resul of their work which, in our minds, they have contributed to our American ideals and for the betterment o the world. We trust that when the majority of our students have finished high school the work for th destructive engineers will have been completed and upon the solid rock of Constitutional government w shall again go forward to lead the work in the establishment of justice based on the Christian philosophy o Jefferson: That all men are created equal and endowed with certain inalienable rights among which ar life, liberty and-the pursuit of happiness. We also trust the democracy in our school shall follow true to the Jeffersonian principle that Education is the foundation of Democracy and that democratic government is possible only among those who think Thus, the greatest contribution our school can'-make is to teach' students to think. 'I As this yearbook becomes our possession at the close of the year, may we rededicate our lives to greate service to our country and to our Christian belief based on true American ideals that the fundamentals 0 liberty be preserved in our land for the coming generation.
