% Donna Maxwell, Editor CHIPMUNK WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL WESTWOOD, CALIFORNIA TOWARD NEW HORIZONS It has been said that one opens a good book with anticipation and closes it with profit. If a student, reading his yearbook, can place himself in a scene orcanenjoyan accomplishment, the yearbook has succeeded. Restless and searching, today's teenager is represented by the free, uncontained qual- ity of nature. New thoughts and emotions are forming, as is a reaching out to new, unexplored areas in life. We will wistfully turn our backs on today and set ouronbetter and brighter paths of tomorrow. We will run faster, try harder, and stretch out our arms toward new horizons! 2 ADMINISTRATION Gerald E. Coach Dana was chosen Coach of the Year in the Feather River League. Their great job had a lot to do with the new era of football in Westwood. A new system of selecting team captains was instigated by Coach Dana this year. After each consecutive game, he chose a team captain for the coming week; and at the end of the season the whole team selected a back captain. Sterling McBride, and a line captain, Steve Casillas. Our Defensive Line stopped tough offensives and saved the day many times. Westwood has seen a definite change of attitude toward football. Our boys have displayed self-discipline, sportsmanship, and courage. They consistently played hard and came out- victorious over great odds. Sterling McBride, Cordell Randall, and Craig Sands were named to the All-League Team in the Feather River League. 31 Westwood 20 Westwood 19 Westwood 21 Westwood 6 Westwood 6 Westwood 7 Westwood 7 Westwood 0 Home games Etna 0 Big Valley 0 Loyalton 0 Herlong 51 Quincy 21 Portola 14 Chester 32 Greenville 19 Coach Green JUNIOR VARSITY Although the Junior Varsity did not always end up victorious, they consistently showed great team spirit and enthusiasm. As the year began, it was obvious that our success has not come from individual athletes, but from a strong team effort. All our teams were characterized by high morale and a keen spirit of competition. The community was rewarded for their support through the win- less years by games and matches that were on the winning side as well as exciting. Westwood, the smallest school in the league, ran second to Quincy, the largest school, in football, wrestling, and basketball. Together the two schools completely dominated league sports. It is to be expected that the largest school will always play the dominant role; however, any time that the league's smallest school can do better than winning as many as it loses it demonstrates terrific drive and spirit.
