A NEW CHAPTER The first Westwood High School annual published in 1919 states, "Ten years ago Indians roamed over the spot where now there is a modern little city." From this same source we learn that in 1914 a grammar school had been erected and that high school classes were first held in this building. By 1918 a separate high school was necessary. The first high school was a two- storyframe structure located on the elementary grounds and included "a large gymnasium, study rooms, recitation rooms and several other rooms but no rooms to rent." A full page picture in this first annual shows a neat Westwood sur- rounded by heavy timber with Mount Lassen, during a period of eruption, clearly visible in the background. Fire completely destroyed the high school in 1927 and The Red River Lumber Company immediately erected a new high school at Third and Greenwood Streets. This building was constructed of heavy posts and beams with walls and ceilings of "ten-quarter" pecky cedar and was to remain a Westwood landmark until its demolition in 1963. The 1928 annual comments that with the new building a new organization was established--a "six-year high school with Junior and Senior divisions, a new type of institution." The closing of the mill in 1956 resulted in the closing and boarding up of the building, and high school classes, after nearly 40 years of separate quarters, were again moved to the elementary school. Steadily increasing enrollments in 1961 and 1962 made it apparent that Westwood would again need a separate high school. The voters of the school district wholeheartedly approv- ed a bond issue to make this possible. As the 1964 annual goes to press the new high school nears completion and another chapter in the history of Westwood will be completed and a new chapter started. LEONARD H. RANDALL DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT
