Of Westwood and it's beginnings, one of the founding students of the Chieftain said: 'IWe, the first students ofWestwood, have started to blaze a trail, a path toward high traditions and education standards. The dips and turns that we carve will be there forever. Whether we turn our little paths into a huge and easy-to-travel freeway is up to us, and up to our successors. This year we have cleared most of the obstacles from our path, and have left markers for others to follow. lt is our hope that those who follow will keep the path clear and extend it beyond the horizon. When Westwood opened in 1962, it was faced with the same problems as any other new school. lt's academic quality was uncertain, it lacked traditions, and it's school spirit was practically nil. During the first year many of those problems were corrected. During the succeeding 24 years, the standards that were estab- lished have been added to and upgraded. The world facing the first Westwood students was vastly different from the one facing the students of today. From the battlefields of an unpopular and controversial war to the international sites of terrorism, from the first steps on the moon to the space shuttle. Westwood has survived the vast changes and prospered. The years from 1962 to 1967 were a transition period for America. People began to examine their values. Many of those people found traditional values repressive and out-of-date and those who rebelled against those repressive values called themselves flower children. Out of their social rebellion came the sexual revo- lution, free love, and environmental con science. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a Plo- bel Peace Prize winner, advocated the abo- lition of racial discrimination through peaceful protest. Unfortunately, Dr. King died before he could see his dream be- come reality. He was assassinated in 1968 at a Memphis hotel. Technology, the 60's grew by leaps and bounds. The supreme goal of the space program was to put a man on the moon. The space program suffered a serious hardship on January 27,1967 when a flash fire occurred during preliminary testing of the Apollo spacecraft killing three astro- nauts. The Polaris series ofnuclear subma- rines was launched in the early 60's. Scien- tists refined a substance called Bakeolite and renamed it plastic. Plastic was then used for almost everything from dentures to Tuppenivare. Pampers sold a new inno- vation to consumers - disposable dia- pers. For the Hrst time contacts were made and open heart surgery was performed. The government suffered a tragic loss when President John F. Kennedy was as- sassinated on November 22, 1965, in Dal- las by Lee Harvey Oswald. Vice-President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as Presi- dent that very day. In 1968, the country was divided politically. Richard Nixon 20-Memories ff.
