IOOPENING ASSEMBLY High Spirited Warriors Welcome A New Year The year began with much enthusiasm, and the opening assembly with its traditional poking fun at the sophomore class put 'SI-'82 off to a good start. The student council members once again dressed up in ridiculous fashions and played ignorant to the ways of high school students while portraying the sophies. The assembly was also directed at initiating and inducting Westwood's new principal .lack Joyce, who was asked to demonstrate his Warrior beat by banging out a rhythm on an Indian drum. A number of the outgoing sophomores decided to run for office, and the elected were John Biggs, president, Matt Riggs, vice president, and Renee Riggs, secretary, each promising to lead the class of '84 proudly through the chal- Ienging year ahead. The new Varsity and J.V. cheerleaders led the assembly with their yells and new cheers, making the crowd roar with spirit. In addition, the Warriorettes moved to the beat of the music, followed by the sounds of the Fight Song and Honky Tonk as the awesome Warrior Band performed. Their season began in July, when the Varsity squad and Warriorettes attended summer cheer camp at Northern Ari- zona University. While at NAU. the Varsity Cheerleaders received superior ribbons every night they performed. They also were awarded the spirit stick, which is given to the group with the most spirit, and a superior ribbon overall. The Leadership Award and the award given for greatest atten- dance at the camp from one school were given to both the cheerleaders and the Warriorettes, Our Junior Varsity squad was the only J.V. team to capture a top-four ranking at their cheer camp. held this year at Ari- zona State University. The Warriorettes, who were sponsored by Sandy Cooper, and the cheerleaders, sponsored by Barbara Commons, pro- moted spirit and excitement at all football and basketball games.
