J.W.W Master Dan Test's first year as Headmaster of Westtown was the 1951-1952 year, our Senior year. ln his quiet and effective manner, Master Dan has been a constant source of encouragement and helpful advice to the Class of 1951. We will never forget his inspiring speech made to the stu- dent body when school opened in September, nor the Senior Camp Supper to which Dan and Polly Test invited our class. First as student, then as Student Body President, later as a teacher and now as Headmaster, Master Dan has become well acquainted with Westtown, her traditions, advantages and problems. His frank approach to problems has been ap- preciated by our class and indeed by the entire school. Greatly admired for his athletic ability, Master Dan was seen often last fall on the soccer field, assisting Master Bob with the soccer team. Many boys greatly benefited by his individual instruction in the game. As the Class of 1951 leaves Westtown, it carries with it fond remembrance of Master Dan, and would leave him the assurance that the help given us by him will not have been given in vain. Secaml 01444 1 Class of '53 started the year off on thr right foot by felcorning many new members into their midst. Their first step was to elect Dick Trisman and Steffie Hetzel as class heads, with Janet Hetzel keeping the records, and Brenda Dessau and Gil Hoag in charge of the finances. Second class did themselves proud by having many members on honor roll. They were well represented in Council, Ser- vice Committee, and on the Brown and White staff. Leading the teams on to victory were cheerleaders Liz Forsythe, Janet Hetzel, Steffie Hetzel and Janet McClure. Last but not least there were the sports. Brenda Dessau, Janet Hetzel and Steffie Hetzel did their share in making this year's hockey team undefeated. On the soccer field, Louis Matlack was a big asset to the varsity: Next came basketball with Lou Matlack again on varsity, and Kirk Jones and Ralph Fairchild doing their bit on J.V. Ronald Bodkin, Jack Branson,Henry Pownall and Greg Rettew were on the swimming team. On the girls' swimming team were Alex Wilson, Steffie Hetzel and Janet Hetzel. They have not let us down and certainly deserve a great deal of credit for a job well done. Margie came to us only last year, and immediately plunged enthusiastically into various student activities, including Work Program and Glee Club. Her participation on council as a rotating member gave her a good foundation for the job that was to come. She, in accordance with her platform of last June, helped us to give Master Dan enthusiastic sup- port in his first and difficult year. Her infectious grin and friendly manner have helped create a close bond between students, council, and faculty. Berkeley stole a jump on Margie by entering Westtown in his sophomore year. He has been very active in dramatics, takingpart in many student productions. Not without athletic ability, he has been on basketball and tennis varsities. In his first class year he was a member of the steering com- mittee, and thereby became acquainted with various social problems of the school. He entered the office of S.B.P. with much enthusiasm. His sense of humor, combined with a seriousness necessary to his position, has helped bring the year to a lively but well-controlled finish. sz rw, vm., -L A A wx fL A E324 -is ,. , J 25 l ,Q ,A ,x'., WA-4 ' .. In a unusually smooth running year with rel- atively few and minor discipline problems the Girls' Council can look back on several accom- plishments. The improved detention system of last year was continued, the attempt to keep the crop of late comers' and shikers working at useful tasks has tried Secretary-Treasurer Peg Bruton's ingenuity. The distribution of laundry, rolling of crepe paper streamers after dances and outside work for Wendell Oliver are all tasks which fell to their lot making the proctor- ing of detention a strenuous job. Council has felt the need of close contact with student opinion in order that it might be more truly a representive body. This is partly achieved through rotating members but a sug- gestion box and the monthly hall proctors' meetings with Council, an innovation made late in the year were also found helpful. Cooperating more closely with their mas- culine counter parts than has been the casein several years the council, which owes much to the leadership of Margie Lawry, sponsored the extra-special initiation ceremony and a spring- time Sundae Party in the Casino as well as do- ing their share on the Christmas Dance. Combining with Girls' Council on many issues, it has been very helpful in keeping the school in touch with our new Headmaster, and him in touch with the school. Council has helped Master Dan with his program of tightening up some of the laxity around Westtown, and in instituting new social privi- leges, such as open granolithic after lunch, and many more joint programs than before. A new punishment for latenesses - nite- club on the night of dancing, has success- fully reduced the number of latenesses among the boys. The Christmas project was the highlight with knitting for Europe at Girls' End and wood-chopping for West Chester at Boys' End besides the annual money drive. During the rest of the year activity was focussed on our affiliated schools in Holland and Germany. To Ommen were sent square dance records and records of the Mixed Chorus singing parts of Bach's Peasant Cantata. Jacob Grimm Schule and Wilhem Schule received records by Marian Anderson and Paul Robeson and ayear's subscription to the National Geographic. Care packages were sent to Germany and money to the A.F.S.C. Food sales were held at Westtown to raise money. Relying on faculty advisor Master Harrie's Know-how and experience they attempted to get color into the book as well as more informal photography. The Faculty informal shots, the Senior snaps and much of the slurp was taken by Master Gene, Kassie Rothrock and Ellwood Houghton. Mary Varian did all the bears, designed the end papers and covers as well as the dividers. The dividers were printed at school, by the staff, with the silkscreen process under her direction. Scubby Elsbree rounded up the ads, Barbie Hoff and Doug Randolph were Photography Managers and Millie Chang and George Houghton handled circulation. Sandy Bennett and her characteristics committee worked hard at their job as did Chris de Kiewiet with her writers staff. 1 K I. Q E 'f,, I . I AQ,.,. During the previous year seniors and first class had been taken on tours of the Brandy- wine Valley by the Brandywine Valley Asso- ciation, an organization interested in con- servation. It was felt, however, that we should use the natural resources of our own 600 acre campus for study and enjoyment. Starting last fall, meetings of the club were well attendedg Master Fred Swan and Master Jan Long handed the organization. Students and Faculty members participated in club activities such as hikes, testing for admit- tance of members to the three graded ranks of achievement and the posting of pictures of birds and wildflowers withdiscoverer's ini- tials as they were spotted in the spring. Many interesting exhibits were placed in Central by Wendell Oliver and others, one was a dead porcupine. The Bird Club was affiliated with the Brandywiners in many of these activities.
