XQ x Fortified by a large number of returning vars' yizlemisxby bers, the girls' swimming team concluded apiicessf-xg season this winter. As the squad began going late 9 check-out that meant wet hair for dinner, spirtztvurals 9:-xx increased by the addition of Coatesville High to the' tk X 1 schedule and the purchasing of new, red tank suits. Swimming the freestyle we had Natalie Bransonvs, x Caroline james, Adrienne Liddell, Ann Moore, and Ann Tomlinson. Breaststrokers included Blyth Barnes, Bitsy Hoag, and Betty Lou Morris. Once again Joyce Kressler and Betsy Barnes took over the diving honors, and the backstrokers, Susan Ambler, Nancy McCurdy, and Bitsy Hoag, were also members of last year's varsity. This year only two of the five meets, Baldwin and Parke Schools, had form swimming. Celia Oliver, Betty Lou Morris, and Barbara Miller led the squad in this division N v4 VK Our thanks to Teacher Mary, who kept the girls splash- fl' U Cgjing along at their best and also to jan Carter, our man- QJIJP ager, who willingly did those thirteenth hour tasks that 0 n . cropped up invariably before the meets. 1. -fum! 2 1.,,,,g. f ,za , ef , M 4

BASEBALL As usual the melting of the snow and the appearance of the first robin brought forth the annual baseball fever at East End. The muddy practice sessions, burning drills in the Playshed, impromptu baseball catches and in- formal batting practices which imperiled the nearby windows took up the interim period between the endtof the basketball season and the beginning of Spring vacation. . I Colonel Raiford had lost ten lettermen but quickly set to work in rebuilding his nine 'around Captain Bob Fowler, first baseman, and pitcher Bart jones. Also in the thick of, it were Heinz Koch, Chris White, Schyler Elsbree, Griff Buttrick and Bruce Reeves. The emphasis was placed on hitting power andqproper strategy in a given situation because Coach Raiford has found that the boys who can get on -base and score are the ones who win the ball games. The season opened at home and one or two games a week were scheduled up until the last week in May. The last games- are tradition- ally with Girard and George School, who perennially furnish vigorous competition. With Manager joe'Sharp- less, Captain Bob Fowler and Colonel Raiford, the team surmounted the last hurdles to conclude a successful season.
