.VUGCER Under coach Master Bob Eng- Q., lish, the 1949 Westtown soccer team compiled a brilliant record of eight wins, three losses, and one tie. Among its eight vic- tories, the Brown and White managed to stop four undefeated teams: George School, Unionville, Friends Select, and the Haver- ford College jayvees. The triumph over George School was a memorable game that climaxed a week of incomparable school spirit. Captain Earl Harrison, playing left inside, led the scoring attack by tallying eight goals while Fred Lane netted five goals from his right inside position., Wings Bart jones, Pete Shaw, and Bob Ayres, and centers Bill McEwen and Schuyler Elbsree rounded out the rest of the scrappy and well-balanced forward line. Wing- halfbacks Len 'Winslow and Captain-elect Wilbur Evans, and center halfback Ted Wickersham alertly roamed their respective territories both backing up the forwards on the offense and playing defensively, while fullbacks Chris White and Griff Buttrick were always on the job to dampen the opposition's scoring hopes and send the ball back into enemy territory. All-Philadelphia goalie Bob Fowler consistently made incredible saves in his role as stopp'er, ' In relief of the first stringers, Comfort, Bell, Reeves, Koch, Smith, and Birkenfeld performed commendablyi Much of the credit for this year's spirited team should go to Master Bob who certainly deserves an Old English for an outstanding job.
