We shall examine our activities, classes, and sports: the different phases of our life here. If you look carefully you may see the quizzes, K.O.B.'s, the last-minute stampedes for the dining room, the afte'r lunch committee meetings, and the ever present broom and dust pan being carried up the hall at 8:10. Again you will hear the music from Wednesday night dancing in the Casino, and vesper singing, and snatches of songs and words from Operetta and play rehearsals in the Auditorium. These things have all been part of our Westtown life and our only regret is that we must leave it so soon. But we have kept this with us, so-step in, won't you? THF BIG THREE Seniors from A to D invited for after-dinner coffee at End-O-Lane, and we go again to share the wonderful hospitality at Master james'. Who can forget his friendly smile, the Meeting handshake, and more than these, his deep concern for high standards, and his personal inter- est in the individual student. Each of us leaves West- town with rich memories of our association with our head- master, James Walker. Come on, faculty! .... Tell me later, I don't have my little black book .... Pep talks in collection .... A definite bent for plaids and founder of Tam-O-Shanter Day .... Remember? Teacher Rachel, Girls' Dean and petite advocate of women's rights, has done a fine job of keeping West End in line. With enthusiasm and wisdom she has worked to keep her half of the school on an even keel. Master Bob- and we recall the psychological soccer coach, the information center for the college question, a big grin and a sense of humor fthose punslj. More serious- ly we thinkof the capable and understanding way in which he,as Dean, has managed Boys' End,and of the liberality and interest he has shown in student projects. We leave Westtown with a sense of the great part these three have played in our lives, as our teachers, our ad- visors, and our friends. f - ' . .' ,. - f r 54 Q f A---1-1 .. ,-.-s. -.., l ,- .,, ,J Standing: C. Letchworth. The faculty, from the day of our first class here at Westtown, have been our friends and advisors. When we have been over exuberant they have calmed, us down, and in our mid-winter fits of melancholy they have cheered us up. They have given up much of their time to help us with an extra hard algebra problem or that Latin phrase that we couldn't translate. Standing: H. Gannon, A. Hartley M. Giessler, H. Price, T. We blamed the faculty when we had to drag ourselves out of bed at six to finish what should have been done the night before. But we will find when we have graduated and gone out into the world that the train- ing and the knowledge they have painstakingly given us are indispensable. Standing: E. Raiford, V. Jones, F. V+ cf from C151 Much of our fun has been due to members of the faculty, and we find that the faculty have been very fair in the amount of power they have assumed, letting us have the experience of leadership and giving useful advice when we called for help. They have taught us to take our re- sponsibilities in life, doing their part in this troubled world of today by educating us, the adults of tomorrow. -fbadfgpffja mafia D 1 2-f.lav.4fZ4..p!f-of an-Hffivfrtffvsj As we, the Seniors, leave Westtown, we remember the one who has meant so much to our life here, whose warm friendship and interest have been so keenly felt through- out the school and whose guidance has been such as in- valuable help- we remember Master james. For over forty-five years james F. Walker has been associated with Westtown- as student, Master, and Prin- cipal. He entered the school as a member of the class of 19085 after graduating he left to study at Ohio State and Harvard, then returned to teach agriculture. In 1924 the Committee chose him to assume the position of Principal, and it is in this office that we have come to know him. We will not forget the skillful and understanding way in which he has managed the school, maintaining a firm religious foundation in changing times, and our thoughts and best wishes go with him as we leave Westtown together. f W A JN m ,X .f' f X LJ' if Q R w . L FOR lf: S PCP .S 5 5' .VUGCER Under coach Master Bob Eng- Q., lish, the 1949 Westtown soccer team compiled a brilliant record of eight wins, three losses, and one tie. Among its eight vic- tories, the Brown and White managed to stop four undefeated teams: George School, Unionville, Friends Select, and the Haver- ford College jayvees. The triumph over George School was a memorable game that climaxed a week of incomparable school spirit. Captain Earl Harrison, playing left inside, led the scoring attack by tallying eight goals while Fred Lane netted five goals from his right inside position., Wings Bart jones, Pete Shaw, and Bob Ayres, and centers Bill McEwen and Schuyler Elbsree rounded out the rest of the scrappy and well-balanced forward line. Wing- halfbacks Len 'Winslow and Captain-elect Wilbur Evans, and center halfback Ted Wickersham alertly roamed their respective territories both backing up the forwards on the offense and playing defensively, while fullbacks Chris White and Griff Buttrick were always on the job to dampen the opposition's scoring hopes and send the ball back into enemy territory. All-Philadelphia goalie Bob Fowler consistently made incredible saves in his role as stopp'er, ' In relief of the first stringers, Comfort, Bell, Reeves, Koch, Smith, and Birkenfeld performed commendablyi Much of the credit for this year's spirited team should go to Master Bob who certainly deserves an Old English for an outstanding job. After this one defeat by Moorestown, 3-1, they tied Swarthmore with a O-0 score and were able to avenge last year's game by a 3-1 victory over West Chester, a team undefeated for two years. Although the jayvee did not win as many games, they too had a good season from the standpoint of spirit and fun. In the three intra-school games, the boys first showed their superiority by trouncing the girls 2-1, despite the efforts of each girl to get her man, and Stone House proved to the girls that they should stick to hockey by beating them 4-2 in the annual soccer game. The Faculty put up a good and hilarious fight, but the girls won 1-O. Characteristics of the season stay with us: bus rides with singing drivers, the ups and downs of the games, holding up the baggy sweatpants, Teacher Mary's pep talks. The Seniors leave to next year's team all the fun and good luck, and even a little more for the Moorestown game. , . r Z 'r impressive. BUYS' BASKETBALL -'liifll ' i iilll taillllgg To begin the Boys' 1949-'50 basketball season, West- town had two returning lettermen: Bob Fowler, the team's tall center, and Earl Harrison, coming back to serve his fourth season. Colonel Raiford upped to the Varsity from last year's reserves two forwards, Captain Ted Wickersham and Bill McEwen, and guard Heinz Koch. Lee Morgan and new senior Fred Lane supplemented the regular lineup, while sky-scraping junior john Houghton and seniors Griff Buttrick and Christ White served as substitutes. Bob Fowler was consistently high scorer, averaging in the first half of the season better than 16 points a game, with Harrison close behind him. Through the season the jayvees were subject to much change, as new combinations were tried. Regularly among them, however, were forwards Barrow, jones, Ayres, and Solt, all seniors, and guards Lebo, Harris, Kaiser and Binford. Returning to form the team next year will be McEwen and Houghton from the Varsity Squad, in addition to members of this year's j.V. who will take over Varsity positions. ff 1 ,, ' H '1 . . 922325. 3 Y ,, , QE Q 94 - 'L 1, A 1 f,,. ,,-,, ,,,,, W l ' ,-rf , ,, fmh.-,,...u', .1 I' 1 f f '77 Z Z, 7 'ff f 'W az W QQ 5 3 , is X wan, 1 - if qi. With Master Fred's sound advice and encouragement, the backlog of returning lettermen found support in the hard working members of the squad who came up to take empty first and second positions. Cap- tain Pete Malcolm regularly rolled up the points as first man in the 50 yard freestyle and 150 individual medley. John Radbill, manager, led the freestyle hundred and with Les Spellman on top in the baclcstroke and Phil Shore first man in the 200 yard freestyle these four made up the roll of second year varsity men. Regulars on the starting lineup were Andre Desobeau, breaststroke, and second place men Da've F. Sutton, Individual Medleyg Len Winslow, 100 yard freestyle, Mike Rogers, fiftyg and Pete Shaw, backstroke. Sten Klinteberg and Ernie Kalebala also swam the freestyle arid Bart jones the breaststroke. V One of the most exciting meets of the year was against West Chester High, February 6. Malcolm took firsts in the 50 and individual medley and Spellman won his event in a very close race, and the start of the last event, the Freestyle Relay, found the score tied, 34-34. But West- town came through to take the relay with Rogers, Shore, Radbill and Spellman and thus the meet by a 41-34 count. V A, --1c.Q,Q 1 - is 'Sur ning: S .-1 Rogers. Kalibala, D. Swimming the freestyle we had Natalie Bransonvs, x Caroline james, Adrienne Liddell, Ann Moore, and Ann Tomlinson. Breaststrokers included Blyth Barnes, Bitsy Hoag, and Betty Lou Morris. Once again Joyce Kressler and Betsy Barnes took over the diving honors, and the backstrokers, Susan Ambler, Nancy McCurdy, and Bitsy Hoag, were also members of last year's varsity. This year only two of the five meets, Baldwin and Parke Schools, had form swimming. The muddy practice sessions, burning drills in the Playshed, impromptu baseball catches and in- formal batting practices which imperiled the nearby windows took up the interim period between the endtof the basketball season and the beginning of Spring vacation. . I Colonel Raiford had lost ten lettermen but quickly set to work in rebuilding his nine 'around Captain Bob Fowler, first baseman, and pitcher Bart jones. Also in the thick of, it were Heinz Koch, Chris White, Schyler Elsbree, Griff Buttrick and Bruce Reeves. The emphasis was placed on hitting power andqproper strategy in a given situation because Coach Raiford has found that the boys who can get on -base and score are the ones who win the ball games. The season opened at home and one or two games a week were scheduled up until the last week in May. The last games- are tradition- ally with Girard and George School, who perennially furnish vigorous competition. With Manager joe'Sharp- less, Captain Bob Fowler and Colonel Raiford, the team surmounted the last hurdles to conclude a successful season. The 440 and 880 were ably taken care ofby Earl Harrison and Fred Lane, while the mile was run by john Radbill along with the record holder Lee Morgan. This year's weight men included returning lettermen Chris White and Len Winslow, who along with Bob Fowler and Ross Smith took care of the shot, discus, and javlin. The pole vaulting and jumping positions were filled from the promising crop of new comers. Master jan Long once again occupied the coach- ing seat, assisted by Master Fred Swan in the field events, and Harry Allen on the managing end. This year for the first time the squad had all eight and the quality of of the new courts at its disposal, tennis improved as no longer did we have to divide our attention between the game and that too-near tree. Mary Borton coached the team again, the nucleus of which was last year's members Helen Hetzel, Ellie Keiser, Anne Belknap, Caroline james, Sandy Bennett, Syl, Perera and Mimi Van Liere. Matches were played against customary old rivals Baldwin, Germantown Friends, Wilmington, Moorestown and George School. The team was a seasoned one, however, for Marty Bucknell, Nancy Zilboorg, and Sonia Simmons, members of the '49 squad, returned to form the mainstay of this year's team. Under Mary Borton's expert guidance and with Milly Chang as the competent manager, the squad hopes to keep unblemished the undefeated record of the past two years. It is with grateful appreciation that we, the class of 1950, dedicate our year book to you, Teacher Gladys. You have helped to make our senior year one that we will always remember with the deepest gratitude, and you have smoothed for us the many rough places that we have encountered. We want to thank you for the impromptu good times and the marvelous class parties at Bacon which we appreciated so much. Among the many memories which we will always cherish are the delicious breakfast after carolling, the Sunday afternoon teas, and the big boxes of candy that appeared mysteriously in the Senior parlors. Many know you as the Home Management teacher who taught the intricacies of cooking, sewing, and house- keeping. Others think of invitations to Bacon, of our own Emily Post of Westtown. Teacher Gladys, we thank you for everything. The help you gave us with our problems, your friendship and fun, we thank you for this year. Er: ' SENIUR CLAS GFFICFRS Through turbulent class meetings and meetings of their own, the Senior Class officers succeeded in completing the business of the class of '5O. Elected in the fall to be responsible for the workings of the class were Harry Allen as president, Juliet Wilson, vice-president, and secretary Elspeth Hughes, with the two treasurers, Helen Steere and Griffith Buttrick holding 'the money bag. Business began to roll in the fall with the treasurers miraculously collecting money for class dues when we were flat broke. This money financed the Amicus, the pennants, and other class projects. In the spring came the final rush of activity: they ar- ranged the Senior Banquet, carried out the Spring Formal in high style, and planned the Class Day banquet and dance. Not concerned only with eating and dancing, they arranged for the traditional planting of the class tree in the Arboretum. The job of the Senior Class officers does not end with graduation. Up to, and perhaps beyond, our fiftieth re- union, they must make all the plans for our various re- unions, keep in touch with the entire class and write the class news-letter. This year the Senior Class officers did a wonderful job of accomplishing all that they had to do, and with these five at the wheel the Class of '50 was one of the best organized classes in many years. Q37 W Standing: G. Buttrick, H. Steere. Sitting: E. Hughes, H. Allen, 1. With their best foot forward, they took the first step by electing Ernie Kalibala and Sue Sangree to take the lead for the year. Elm Musson kept the log, and Bitsy Hoag was the keeper of the keys to '52's funds. Through- out the year, Council meetings saw the faces of numerous Second Class representatives, while Mary Ann Kupp and Bitsy Hoag held down jobs on the Service Committee and the Brown and White staff, respectively. Latin verbs and the mice in Room 13 notwithstanding, Second Class was seen consistently on the Honor Roll. But they didn't stop there. joanie Nicholson did them proud on the Hockey Varsity, as did Anne Moore and Betsy Barnes on the Swimming Team. Standing on the grandstand, beating on a tin can- plus cow-bells and even a coast-guard siren, there you have Second Class following the cheers of Barbie Miller, Mary Ann Kupp, Tommy Hickman and Thorny Penfield. On the field and off, in the building or out, theirs was an active class, and this year was just an indication of the prize future of Class of '52. Tai? 2255+ t 332,32 MK? i 'f.e,i?i,. Led by Margie Satterthwaite and Fred Sawin, elected as co- chairmen in the fall, the class of fifty-three was soon recognized as an ambitious group. Joyce Canady lent a helping hand on Work Program and Council, having been elected as a rotating member to both. The fall found many of the boys, including Towns- hend johnson, Don Stoneham, Don Gorham, Bob Tomlin- son, Ronald Bodkin and Russell jones on the Stonehouse Soccer Team, which completed a successful season and roused the hopes of the school in regards to future West- town victories. Linda johanning played on basketball varsity, and in the spring several of the class turned out for baseball and tennis. On Halloween the class gathered together for a party at Russell jones', chaperoned by Teacher Mable. If the spirit evidenced there carries through the next three years, the class of '53 will be a great credit to Westtown. 1 :a,:f,:5. 3 Mi z ... 4' A X f W' 1 4-4 fh- .mr + ,pf hw! They have guided the school through an enthusiastic and successful year. Equipped with tact and poise and two years of previous experience on Council, Syl was well-prepared to fulfill her office. A new-comer in second class, she soon was recognized as a fine student, making Cum Laude in her senior year. Athletically, her sports ability has placed her on the hockey, basketball, and tennis varsities. An infectious laugh and sense of humor, announcements in Collection- there's East End's S.B.P. This year Syl has advocated closer co-operation between the two councils and other school committees, and has led Girls' End to the conclusion of a lively year. Earl, head of Boys'Council as Student Body President, entered Westtown in the seventh grade and in his six years he has earned varsity letters in soccer, basketball, tennis, and track. Dramatically inclined, he has taken part in the Shakespeare, Workshop Theatre, and Senior plays. Prepared for his office by a year's term on Coun- cil, he placed much emphasis during the year upon school spirit with excellent results. The job of an S.B.P. is never easy, but both Earl and Syl handled a tough assignment well, and we owe our S.B.P.'s a great deal for making this year one of West- town's best. r, 1 SN Q , S 1 1 f l .-'- z ,em icy., X V ii i: is 1' 2 ii-X ,P 5 , w , V 'X Y .rays X V 7 -2 N ,X , 5 is 1 if x 3 , AR Standing: E. WGRK PRUGRAM CUMMITTF Work Program was off to a flying start this year when the members returned with Council before the opening of school to prepare for the onslaught of students. As the year progressed, Wis Comfort and Caroline james, as the student heads, were ably assisted in carrying out their seven-days-a week job by Master Russ and Teacher Annabelle, the faculty chairmen and advisors. The Senior members were Margot Schutt and Sten Klinteberg, while First Class was represented by Schuyler Elsbree and Carolyn Rothrock, and Second Class by David F. Sutton and Hannah Calkin. W.P.C. made several improvements this yearg the most interesting was the creation of a new work job, that of waking members of early morning set-up crews. It was occasionally necessary to waken the Waker, but actual latenesses and absences were lessened considerably. All in all, with student cooperation W.P.C. has chalked up another successful year. SFRVIBE CUMMITTEE Piecing together weav-its for afgans, slapping up posters, holding spirited meetings and passing the hat, this year's Service Committee was a busy and success- ful one. Headed by co-chairmen Peter Shaw and Helen Steere, the committee started off the year by giving a new impetus to trips to week-end work camps. As in past years, a Christmas Relief Drive was the committee's major project, and by having a frugal meal, a carnival and a penny jug filling contest as well as by collecting individual contributions, approximately 3460.00 Was assembled. These funds were divided between Tokyo Friends Girls' School, Ramola Boys' School, four needy German families and the American Friends Service Committee. We hope that with more of the support and enthusiasm which the student body has shown this year, the Service Committee may truly make a contribution to world peace. STEERING CUMMITTEE Holding hurried meetings after Monday lunch to plan socials for the week, Steering Committee, guided by Fritz Bell and Bunny Hughes, has tried unceasingly to include everyone in lively original activities. The Auc- tion, in which Berkley Harris raffled everything from a pink, furlined mouse trap to a pair of goldfish, was a wonderful demonstration of the student enthusiasm and this was evident again in the fine turnout for the Talent Show, which featured hysterical lessons on How to Take a Bath . Steering Committee also sponsored a Treasure Hunt and cooperated with the Service Com- mittee inputting on a benefit carnival. Thursday evenings were varied with turnabouts and a couple of large scale Paul joneses.Square dancing, with Master jan and Teacher Mary as callers, was received enthusiastically, as were dancing classes. Altogether, Steering Committee can look back upon a lot of fun thinking up ideas for socials, and putting them into action. xi' xi- D Sur LJ Standing: S. Perera, N. McCutdy, V. Dulany, S. Ambler, B. Senior cheerleaders were Blyth Barnes and Harriet Liever, while from Second Class came Mary Ann Kupp, Thorny Penfield and Tommy Hickman, and jan Aston represented Third Class. A spectator bus went to the George School soccer game again this year Cwith various incidents en route!! where the squad cheered the team on to a thrilling victory. Last spring, Bob Fowler and Ted Wickersham were elected president and treasurer of the Boy's A.A. Len Winslow and Sten Klinteberg, although not on the execu- tive board, served as vice-president and assistant secre- tary. At their first meeting, the board elected president Fowler as chairman and Heinz Koch, basketball manager, as secretary. Other members of the board were managers Phil Councill, soccer, joe Sharpless, baseball, and Stacy Wood, tennis, while Colonel Raiford, b0y'S athletic director, attended meetings as faculty adviser. Besides passing bills on equipment and trips, the executive board voted the number of athletic awards, elected East End's most valuable athlete, and assisted the Girl's A.A. Treasurer Lissa Smith consistently chalked up a sub- stantial profit from the candy store, while Bunny Hughes, at the 9:30 in the nook meetings, recorded the A.A. business as secretary. Also serving on the board were Juliet Wilson, the Veep , and the six managers: Judy Weller, hockeyg jan Carter, swimming, Polly Richardson, basketballg Milly Chang, archeryg Cliff Downs, tennis, and Ginny Dulany, softball. Associate editors on the board were Lissa Smith, Chris de Kiewiet and Stacy Wood. Don Walker and Anne Tomlinson were in charge of the business department, while Bob Maris held the position of art editor. Rhyme and Reason successfully turned out two issues this year, after material was collected from both ends of the house, and eventually turned into magazine form by the hard working board. Among the various stages of production were judging contributions, checking the galley-proofs, selling subscriptions, and finally getting the issues to the subscribers. We hope that R. 8: R. will continue to grow and be even better in the coming year. As the comparatively new magazine has gradually overcome obstacles both financial and literary, we feel sure that with school support it will have continued success. Back Row: H. Calkin, A. Brown, N. GIRLS' GLEE CLUB The Girls' Glee Club, under the able direction of Teacher Dot, has again drawn many enthusiasts this year. Tuesday nights saw many in attendance at rehear- sals, most of these being underclassmen, for the Glee Club gives an opportunity for singing to those to whom Mixed Chorus is not yet open. The Glee Club sang two chorals for the Bach Program at Christmas time, which were arranged for the group by Teacher Colleen. They were Hush My Babe, Lie Still In Slumber, and Now Let All The Heavens Adore Thee. During the winter term the Glee Club also gave a program in joint Collection. Serving as accompanist, Dottie Terrell helped the Glee Club to make this year a success. SENIUR PLAY. . . The leads were chosen before Christmas, but by the night the entire chorus knew all the parts and had been con- stantly blessing the showers with information vegetable, animal and mineral. The curtain rose on a stage full of sherry-drinking pi- rates, as Pirate King Bruce Reeves and side-kick Samuel, alias Dick Holton, hailed their young indentured pirate Frederic fDon Walkerj. He, upon denouncing his com- panions for tricking him intolengthened servitude, stalked off and accidentally ran into a bevy of beauties who had strayed in to the pirate lair. The national association which blessed our Brown and JJ White with a highly-coveted All-American rating little knew, perhaps, with what pains the board had purchased the honor. Piloted by Griff Buttrick and Nancy Zilboorg this year's predominantly Senior staff brought its twelve issues to press with no blank columns, no London Fog pictures, and, one could safely add, no sleep. Much of the credit for a successful year is due to Teacher Alice Pennell, who with her knowledge of the shoulds and shouldn'ts of newspaperdom, and of inner workings of the Brown and White, has given final checks on the final copies. Of course some things Teacher Alice did not know about: those after-lights headline-writing sessions, the 4 A.M. copy-delivery escapades to Newtown Squaregthe self-satisfied leer on the faces of the sports staff as Buttrick sat working away the Thursday after the Monday morning deadline, and the frantic calls from the printer: If the rest of your paper isn't here this afternoon-no paper. But somehow everything has worked out ,without Cseriousl mishap, and as each retiring member of the board sees his name replaced on the masthead by that of another, he wishes to his successor all the headline counts, printer's mistakes , and makeup headaches that compile a year of B8zW ---- and all the fun and en- joyment that go with them. iff Nl Q n. -I U J.- 0: 2: Um B. .o '-'. It had its beginnings last june in the choosing of the board, which set out in September to organize the jobs to be done, to bring order out of chaos . At the first meeting the board decided to follow the the pattern set last year - small size, thick, one-senior- to-a-page yearbook. We, also, used offset printing, and pasted-up ourselves. The department heads set out to do a bang-up job from the first. Phil Councill stepped into the editorship and made up the dummy , visited the printer and kept the board mindful of the deadline. Polly Richardson and Ted Wickersham persuaded the students to buy several hundred photographs and arranged the hectic Senior picture sched- ule in the fall. As Art Editor, John Barrow executed the many ingenious drawings, while the two Circulation heads, Sue Ambler and Lee Morgan sold subscriptions in a door-to-door campaign. Harry Allen, all-important Business Manager, juggled finances and kept us within our budget, and Characteristics head Fritz Bell main- tained order in those riotous, confused meetings, egged on his large committee and produced the 60 words per for 80 class members. Anne Belknap had the job of assigning articles, persuading them into existence, then editing to specification. Handling advertising, Felix Cayo drummed up patronage in ads Cas large as possiblell, while julie Wilsonacted as class lawyer in creating our wills. To Mimi Van Liere's lot fell the many odd jobs of assistant editor: planning, .re-typing and helping with lay-outs. ln training for 1951 were our First Class repre- sentatives Stacy Wood, Bruce Reeves, Asia Alderson and Mary Varian. Lastly, Master Harrie, who as faculty ad- visor put in so much time helping us and giving experi- enced advice. To the entire board go thanks for Va job well done. Alf though the final product has meant hard work and frantic last minute sessions, it's been fun too, and satisfying to see our ideas and elbow-grease formulated in this Amicus.
