These lines written by the poet, Fitz-Greene Halleck, on the death of his friend, express the feelings of the friends and classmates of Joseph Halstead. In his four years at Westport, Joe worked faithfully and cheerfully, completing each task assigned to him. As one of the school's outstand- ing athletes, Joe excelled in both football and basketball. He served as treasurer of his eighth grade class and he was elected sergeant-at-arms in his sophomore year. He took part in many activities as a member of the Irving Literary Society and the W Club.
