Said he, “The Kingdom is beset with dark clouds and the subjects are worried about inflation. We have not enough wood to burn and tomorrow may be worse.” The king’s most trust- ed friend, the Duke of Toccafondi responded, “King Gary, though the sky is grey, we can make the sun shine again. We can and we will!” Sir Robert declared, “We have on the hill of Westmont an old and crumbling castle, it is something that has lasted for many years and will last forever. We can rebuild it. It is something that will give our subjects hope. It will lead us into a new world which will give our children and our children’s children a sense of purpose.” The king rose to his feet and said, “Sir Robert, I have an idea. We will rebuild it and put Princess Carol and Prince Jack in charge. So be it!” Superintendent: Dr. Gary J. Estadt Curriculum Director: Dr. Primo V. Some serfs were outstanding in following the instructions of the scholars, and they were recognized for it. Throughout many long hard days of labor and nights of preparing themselves for the challenges to come, the serfs were guided by the scholars. The scholars were like candles in the vast dark- ness of the training that each serf would endure. They followed the scholars’ instructions and learned. The serfs were yet young in their knowledge of the ways of the kingdom, but in time they would increase their skills and someday be part of the elite group known as the knights of Westmont. Row 1: M. They yearned for some excitement, so the Prince and Princess summoned the Marquis of Claycomb, who brought with him the old book-a book in which the rules of ORDEALS were written. It was determined that, according to the old book, all the people of Westmont would challenge the subjects of the neighboring . kingdoms. Each ordeal would consist of an affair of honor. B Each contestant would be judged according to the rules C written of tradition, propriety, courage, and sacrifice. Many brave knights and maidens put themselves in the arenas DM against other competitors of neighboring kingdoms. The or- JiMr deals began on a warm autumn day and continued through JR. the snows of winter. As the year progressed, the subjects HM became stronger and more competitive. Although the maid- ens and knights who fought these ordeals were courageous, fearless, and strong, they didn't always win. The ordeals united the kingdom and gave them a sense of spirit known as Hilltop Pride. Going to District singles were Amy Glosser and Marlene Calderon. At the no. 1 doubles team was the senior team of Glosser-Rovansek, and at no. 2 doubles was the soph- omore team of Curtis-Figge. Both of these teams went to Altoona for Districts where Glosser-Rovansek advanced to the quarterfinals but were defeated by Indiana. Although the team went into a late season with 2 match- es postponed due to rain, they stayed strong in the cold weather to defeat Somerset. These teams were Indiana, Bishop Carroll, and Central Cambria, who, finished respectively ahead of them. “Burket’s Bombers” also won sectionals and districts. The top five players participated in the Tri-State Rough Rider tournament in Kent, Ohio during the middle of the season. Robbie Leppert finished an impressive fourth. Jeff Wiegman, John Dunn, Dan Picking, Robbie Leppert, and Mark Povich qualified for district 6 championships. The 9th Grade Football Season was disappointing from a win-loss standpoint. They were able to score 94 points of- fensively, but 134 points were scored against them defen- sively. One reason for the bad Season was the small turnout of boys. The bright spot of the team was Courtney Marley, who was the leading scorer. They start- ed out the season with a close 8-2 win over Penn Cambria by mounting one of the best goal line stands in the final seconds ever. They then moved on to their old nemesis Richland who they beat handily 26-0, thus getting revenge for last season’s only regular season loss. At 2-0 they rolled into Ligonier stadium and were handed an upsetting loss 29-0. Keying up for their biggest game of the season against the perenially tough team of Forest Hills, they lost 16-2, but not without putting a scare in Forest Hills in a closer-than-the-score-shows game. Rebounding off these losses, the next week they trounced Conemaugh Township 22-0. Traveling to Ebensburg, they won a tough physical contest with Central Cambria 10-6, getting their first and only field goal of the season. Back on the winning track, they annihilated the Windber Ramblers 48-0 for their third shut-out. The following week they lost a close game with Somerset 6-0. Finishing out the season with an away game at Bedford, they shot down the Bisons 41-19, there- by ending another tough and successful season. This was our football team’s third successive winning season, prov- ing once again that Westmont Hilltop is a school to be reckoned with. Row 1: Ass’t Coach: J. Hoover, Ass’t Coach: A. Swedler. Thanks to the organiz- ing efforts of Robby Lee, Dave Lee, and Craig Eckstein, the team began practicing two weeks prior to it's first meet. The runners were coached by Mike Harchick, a former Saint Vincent College runner. Dana Vore trained with the boy’s team, and ran all of the meets as an inde- pendent in the girl’s races. The team didn’t have an out- standing record, but personal goals were achieved throughout the season. The striders ran in three double-dual meets, and com- peted in several large meets. The first large race was the Western Central All Conference Meet, held at U.P.J. Westmont placed 7th at this meet, but it didn’t count due to a forgotten registration fee. Craig Eckstein was 24th and Tim Lehman was 31st out of over 100 competitors. Dana Vore placed 3rd among the girls, qualifying for a trophy. The next large meet on the schedule was the U.P.J. Invitational Meet, where Westy ended up in 7th place. Craig Eckstein crossed the line in 12th, while John Elston was 24th in the AA class. There were 105 runners in the race. Dana Vore placed 5th in the girl’s division. The team’s final race was the District 6 Championship, held at State College. Westmont managed an 8th place finish. Craig Eckstein placed 35th in the AA class and was followed by Tim Lehman in 42nd. Dana Vore placed 15th among 63 girls in the AA class. 59 s Reason rbgtesssesf (girls Jfmprobe 60 Even though the record of the freshman team was 4 wins and 6 losses, it was marked as a successful season because of the improvement shown as the season progressed. The first half record was 1 win and 4 losses; the second half of the season improved to 3 wins and 2 losses. The team’s speciality was their ability to play defense. Karen Pipan and Karen Kohler excelled at this aspect of the game. Three guards who greatly improved their skills were Nicole Gardill, Beverly Goughnour, and Tammy Smith. Two other members of the team, Karen Davis and Carol Pavlosky, did not earn letters, but worked hard to help the team. Rebounding was contributed by Christine Gritzer and Kristen Fritz. The shooter, who provided most of the scor- ing, was Tracy Foster. There were two outstanding games. The first was against Ferndale in the second half of the season. This was the game the girls proved to themselves that they were a good team. They easily defeated Ferndale after having lost to them earlier in the season. The last game of the season was also memorable because, even though they lost, it was a close contest against a team that ended the season undefeated. The success of this season can be measured in wins - 16 (the most ever by the girls’ basket- ball team) and the 3rd place finish in District VI, (the first time the girls’ basketball team will compete in the statewide basketball playoffs). The team was led by three seniors, Kelly Dorian, Caro- lyn Barber, and Patty Carnell. Kelly Dorian, captain and floor leader, received the Honorable Mention “Central Western League All Star”, was named to the ‘82’ Fern- dale Lions all tournament team and the ‘82’ Crusher Classic all tournament team. Carolyn Barber, the team leader in rebounding, also received the Honorable Men- tion “Central Western League All Star” and was also named to the ‘82’ Ferndale Lions all tournament team. The third starting senior was Patty Carnell. Her contribu- tion can not be measured in statistics but by her constant, hard, unselfish play which was a standard for her perfor- mance. Three outstanding underclassmen were Tina Holtz, Lisa Galasso, and Trish Barber. Tina Holtz, the second leading scorer and rebounder, was named to the “Central Western League All Star Team.” Lisa Galasso, a classy guard, has scored 560 points in two years and was named to the “Central Western League All Star Team.” The only sophomore letter winner, Trish Barber, started the last seven games of the season to provide a nucleus for an outstanding basketball team next season. 62 Sitting: P. The season was considered quite successful in that half of the team was made up of seventh graders. The team also won the 24-team Herald Dispatch Tourney in West Virginia. This tournament was the largest of its kind in the country. The individuals who have excelled throughout the season and won Mt. Conference Championships are ninth graders: Dave McMillan, Jim Fleck, Jeff Helbling, and team cap- tain, Todd Vore. We had two dominate seventh graders and Mt. The Hilltoppers were led by Todd Bukovich who was one of the top scorers in the district, averaging 19.4 points per game. Bob Gegan controlled the boards for the team with 301 rebounds and also was second in scoring with a 12.3 average. Todd and Bob were selected to the all tourney team at Conemaugh Valley Boosters Tournament. Todd was selected as M.V.P. in the tournament. Other team members who started were Tom Sigmund (221 points, 232 rebounds), David Stouffer (178 points). Chuck Hornick (150 points, 148 rebounds), and Fred Ha- maty (57 points). With a record of 15-2-3, they captured first place in Section 1 of the WPIHL AA Division. Twelve returning members provided a strong foundation for this year’s team. The Hilltoppers had the most produc- tive first line in the league in Dan Picking, Warren Cardiff and Barney Custer along with top defensemen Rooney Gleason and Tom Reddecliff. Senior captain Dan Picking led the team in total points with 50 (30 goals) at the end of the regular season. Junior wings Warren Cardiff and Barney Custer had accounted for 50 points (22 goals) and 35 points (14 goals), respectively. Senior defensemen Rooney Gleason had 32 points (7 goals) and Tom Reddecliff had 18 points (8 goals). The first line’s success was augmented by seniors': John Tredennick’s hustle, Rob DeWaters’ enthusiasm, Chris Phillips’ determination, and junior Jim Lenzi’s ability. Goalies Dana Heinze, a freshman, and Doug Rush, a sophomore, were young and unexperienced but demonstrat- ed their potential talent and had an excellent season. The team as a whole displayed a very confident and spirited attitude. This, accompanied by their propensity for a physical game, resulted in an exciting and victorious season. Dan Picking and Rooney Gleason were selected to play for the WPIHL All-Star squad as well as for the Pennsylva- nia Interscholastic Hockey League squad. Warren Cardiff was also chosen to compete with the PIHL team. HkSTHGST i-abtesi of tfjc Hafee Mop head???? GIRLS SWIMMING Row 1: L. Donahue, C. Havas, J. Meyer, C. Marhefka. Row 2: B. Irvin, L. The swimmers showed continual improvement through- out the season. The team consisted of one senior John Dunn, four juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman. Four swimmers qualified for districts. They were: John Dunn, Jim Dunn, Jim Gardill, and Dave Dunlop. John took second in the 50 yd. freestyle at Districts. This qualified him for the State Championships. Coach Denny Hartnett hopes next year’s team will have a better turnout of swimmers. Congratulations is due for the endurance and courage showed by the few swimmers that were on the team. 77 babies iJBumpeb St ©tstricta SENIORS: Y. Feiterman. D. Curtis. P. Carnell. K. Hughes, J. In this tournament Yvonne Fetterman, the team captain, was named to the all-star team, along with Lisa Galasso, a junior. Six outstanding seniors led the team, each contributing their own individual talents. Patty Carnell aided the team with her powerful outside spiking, while Kristi Hughes be- came very skilled at middle hitting. Donna Curtis was counted on for her consistent serving and back-line playing. Jennifer Estadt assisted the team with her spiking and back- line playing. The setting position was greatly enhanced by Wendy Rovansek. Yvonne was an excellent spiker and back-line player. Lisa Galasso, the team’s leading setter. Sue Estadt, an exceptional spiker and Chris Aikey, an excellent server, contributed greatly to the varsity team. Another exception- al spiker, Deanne Curtis, was the only sophomore who played on the varsity team. The girl’s coach, Miss Doris Leibfreid, is extremely proud of the accomplishments of the team. They finished their winning season with 11 wins and 3 losses. Two of these losses were attributed to the Richland High School team who is now the AA State champion. The cooperation, enth- usiam, and dedication of the teammates made it a very enjoyable season. 79 S.V.’s JWafee Comeback jIUtlitnsi of Vollepball She Actually hit it! Kneeling: T. Richards. A. This year’s track team posted a season record of 6 wins and 3 losses, which was a much better season than first expected. The small turnout of girls at the beginning of the season made it almost impossible to field all of the events. With the commitment and hard work from all the girl’s the season turned out very successful. Wins were recorded against Central Cambria, Bishop McCort, Forest Hills, Penn Cambria, and Bedford. De- feats came from Somerset, Johnstown and Richland. The girls also finished 4th in the Westmont Invitational. Five school records were broken this year. They include the 300 meter hurdles by Laura Dewar; the 1600 meter relay with the team of Carolyn Barber, Patricia Barber, Dana Vorc, and Mary Beaujon; and the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs by Dana Vore. The first one was the Mountain Conference Relays, held at Westmont. Westy was 10th out of 14 teams. The next large meet was the Mountain Conference Track and Field, held at Central Cambria. Westmont's men man- aged a 9th place finish out of 16 teams. In the last regular meet of the season, Westmont swept both Homer Center and Bishop Carroll to end the season with two big wins. The final meet of the season was the United Invitational. West- mont finished 4th out of 11 teams, missing 3rd by 1 point. Dave Aberncthy was the most outstanding member of the track team, receiving the Herdman Track Award. Dave won the discus throw in almost every meet and won District 6 competition. From districts Dave procedcd to State com- petition at Shippensburg. By the end of the two day event Dave was 8th in the state, narrowly missing the school record by throwing 144' 11 On the track Scott Koontz led the team in points by running in 4 different events and usually placing in the top six at all meets. 91 Champions of tfje Court Boys Tennis: Row 1: A. Calderon, S. Slept, G. Suppes, C. Kerin. Ron 2: M. King, D. Rugh Kerin, R. Gleason. This year’s tennis team had an undefeated season, which earned them the Southern Six Championship. The teams success was really a result of three years of training under coach Lance Chanda. It all came together this year. D. Rugh Kerin won all his singles matches at the No. 1 position this year. Mike King at No. 2, Greg Suppes at No. 3, and Stan Stept at No. 4 were all tough competition for their opponents. The No. 5 position was shared between Rooney Gleason and A1 Calderon. Freshman Craig Kerin played No. 2 doubles at some matches. D. Rugh Kerin and Mike King played no. 1 doubles while Greg Suppes and Stan Stept, Rooney Gleason, Al Calderon and Craig Kerin shared the second doubles spot. The team had an easy match over Bishop McCort, Som- erset (one match unfinished by not required for the cham- pionship), and Johnstown (one match won by default). Indi- ana was their toughest competition. The highlight of the season was when the No. 1 doubles team of Kerin and King was down 1-5 against Indiana. The season rested on this match. Kerin and King won 6 consecutive games to win the match, giving the team the victory and making the team eligible for the championship. Two years ago the team got a new coach, Lance Chanda. The first year with Mr. Chanda the team only won 2 of 14 matches. He worked with the team and last year the team won 7 of 14 matches. This year, after three years of steady progress, the team was unbeaten. 93 GIRLS J.V. BASKETBALL The girl’s J.V. Basketball team of 1982 saw the year as a year of learning. Although the year was not blessed with many victories, the team showed a mark of improvement during the season. The high point of the season was the improvement of Trish Barber who advanced to a starting position in varsity play. Trish Barber and Donna Tomak lead the J.V. team as the scoring duo. Caroline Ferguson gave the team that extra needed rebounding strength off the boards. Point gaurd Tracy Bukovich showed that much needed stamina, used to direct team play. Rounding out the starting five was Sandy Gegan, who until this year had not seen any competitive action. Two very important parts of the team were Lori Dietrich and Charlene Bartosik. Lori gave the team strength of the sixth person on the bench, and moved to a starter when Trish was called up for varsity play. Charlene also showed improvement with important defen- sive play. The important factor in this year’s J.V. team of sopho- mores is that they will be playing a very important part in next year’s varsity team. J.V. FOOTBALL The J.V. Football team had a very disappointing season. They ended the season with 0 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties. In game one, Westmont tied Windber 0-0 after a very physical game. Westmont lost their next game, 18-0 to a very good North Star team. Lou Crocco led Westmont with 21 tackles and 80 yards of rushing. In the third game, Westmont tied Somerset, 16-16. Westmont scored first with a 50-yard pass, but Somerset scored two touch-downs in the second half. The Hilltoppers lost to Forest Hills 22-0 and Indiana 42-8. The Indiana game was played without the regular quarter-back and center. The sixth game was lost to Conemaugh Valley 8-6. This was a very physical and mental game. The last game was cancelled because of too many Westy injuries. Some outstanding players were Mike McGrath, Ken Campbell, and Louis Crocco. Louis Crocco led the team in tackles and assists, and rushed for 870 years in seven games. The bad season can be contributed to the small turnout of players and to too many injuries. Recognition is due to the players who stuck thru to the end. Good Luck next year. J.V. WRESTLING This years’ J.V. team finished with a strong 10-2 record. The only losses, for the second consecutive year, came to the same teams that defeated our varsity. The J.V.’s lost to Bedford and Derry. This years’ record was an improve- ment over last years’ 10-5 record. Maybe next year we can eliminate the two losses. The ten victories included some very decisive wins. The J.V. team won the first place trophy in their only tournament competition of the year at the Conemaugh Township Christmas Tournament. West- mont placed six of nine wrestlers in the finals and all six won championships. They were Lance Blackburn (98 lbs.). Bob Shostek (199 lbs.), Eric Henry (138 lbs.), Brian Mill- er (155 lbs.), Phil Walker (167 lbs.), and Rich Glass (185 lbs.). As the level of competition improves each year, the importance of an experienced J.V. squad escalates. Next years’ J.V. schedule will be an improved one. More tour- naments and better teams will highlight the schedule. The biggest advantage of a J.V. program is that everyone who participates in the sport will get his chance to contribute to the teams' sucess. It is a great honor and a fantastic experience to be of vital importance to a teams’ success. Just ask the boys from this years team what it is to contribute to a conference championship and a ranking of ninth in the state class AA. Next years’ success is depen- dent upon participation. So lets get the numbers up! J.V. VOLLEYBALL This years’ Junior Varsity team, coached by Doris Leib- freid, played their way to an 8-6 record. Considering the small amount of team experience the girls had together, this was a very pleasing record. Chris Aikey, team captain, and Lisa Swedler played various positions including the position of setters for the team. Junior teammate Katy Orr showed much improved skills at hitting and back line positions. Sophomores Leigh Aikey, Gwen and Stephanie Bosserman, Tracey Gaborick, and Kelley Hughes also contributed their fine abilities on the court to help in Westmont’s winning season. Miss Leibfried was especially impressed by the team’s ability to make incredible corn- backs. These girls were always very determined and never gave up to anyone. This is very important in volleyball because games can change very quickly due to the girls’ determination to win. This happened frequently and the winning attitude won the games. Coach Leibfried says she was happy with this years’ season, but says the outlook for next years’ is even better. Acores; GIRLS’ TENNIS West. They sum- moned each scholar and a few chosen subjects to discuss the problem. After many long hours of debate the per- fect solution was decided upon. Each scholar, who was able, would start his own special guild according to his talents. They sought out all subjects of the kingdom to support them. The scholars acted as advisors to the guilds. There were guilds for artisians, minstrels, and future scholars. Scrolls and manuscripts were kept to proclaim and record royal news. The kingdom was soon flourishing with much activity. iWaibens Pefjtnb ®l)e Jflen Varsity Cheerleaders: Ron I: L. Lovette. L. Vore. K. Snyder. Ron 2: Co-Captain: B. Stumpo, Capt.: W. Prothcro, L. They appeared in the 20th Century Fox movie, “All the Right Moves.” The Hill- top Band was transformed into the Walnut Heights Band using the same uniforms and color schemes. The Filming itself took approximately 5 days, 35 hours and 100 band members to film half-time and crowd scenes. The Band endured long hours, mud, and simulated rain to make this movie which will be appearing some time this fall. In October of last year, the band was in two competitions. Although the band took fourth and fifth places in the Bed- ford and Windber competitions, the front nearly missed First place in both competitions. The band will be traveling to Winchester, Virginia in May for Concert Band competition. Over all, the band did an excellent job this year. 106 ISBanbering lingers Mixed Ensemble: Row 1: J. Gardill. She never misses an opportunity to challenge her students to think, to be creative, to be all that they are capable of being. To her students at Westmont, she is a very special person - someone who is both a friend and a teacher, but first and foremost, a teacher who capitalizes on her ability to know and relate to her students in a way that promotes learning. Miss Chuba's daily sayings written carefully and thoughtfully on her blackboard, are typical of her style. For her presence at Westmont Hilltop, we are grateful. Thank-you for being you. Under the direction and supervision of advisor, Mr. Fred McLoota and president Ellen Krizncr, this year’s Student Council has admirably served the student body. Dedicated and enthusiastic members helped with Fresh- man Orientation during the summer. As soon as the school year started, extensive plans for Homecoming and Parent’s Day were already under way. The month of November was set aside for a fundraising program. Be- fore Christmas the Student Council sponsored a Blood Drive in the High school gym and surpassed their goal of 75 pints of blood. This year, 3 representatives were sent to the annual Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils Confer- ence held in Somerset. Thay all came back with great new ideas and a contagious enthusiasm. On Valentine’s Day, the council sponsored another Carnation Sale, sending over 1,100 flowers throughout the school. They cooperated with the faculty in organiz- ing a Food Drive to benefit the unemployed during the month of March. In addition to the club’s individual activities, various members representing Student Council were called upon to participate in other school functions. All of these events were accomplished by a surprisingly small mem- bership of 40 energetic students. The culmination of the year’s schedule was the elec- tion of new officers who will hopefully carry on the tradition of excellence and service for another year. The Phoenician Staff salutes Student Council the 1982- 83 CLUB OF THE YEAR. 137 JtJulettbe Jiall n Cncljanteti Cbening i§ ert ng banquet M nigf)tf)Ooti The knights were leaving the kingdom of Westmont. It seems as if we knew you For so many, many years. But when we really think of it Our eyes swell up with tears. It passed so very quickly As if you were never here. Seems all we did was blink our eyes And then you disappeared. People may think we’re odd. But we loved you as our friends. Maybe some day, hopefully.
