There were times when we all wished we could have called in understudies to assume the role of our daily lives, but as we look back, we'll be glad that there were no substitutes. Now the curtain is opening to a new beginning and a broader, more challenging production. AIU 1 NII ST 1C AT II C N 14 Row 1: Mr. W. Jones (Non-member), Mr. T. Wiegman. Dr. R. Swanson (Pres.), Mr. R. Comic relief is as necessary in education, as in drama to relieve the tensions caused by studies and other adolescent pressures. This man alleviates the school related pressures. Although he is not a “court jester,” his quiet sense of humor is shown through his congeniality towards students and faculty. The man we honor has the unique ability to inspire students in learning. He is an understanding man who sincerely cares for his own students as well as for the entire student body. After the completion of his classroom responsibilities he still finds time to support the school and his students though his presence at athletic events. Therefore, Key Club proudly announces that the Teacher of the Year for 1982 is Mr. William Grubb. IHCW T€ IN BUSINESS F.B.L.A.: Row I: J. Gossard. D. Rosage. M. Arcuri, T. Schulkcr.. Sec: B. Gehlman. Scott, how far are you on the divider pages? . . . John and Jefe, how many days have you been working on that layout? . . . What are you people sitting around for, there’s work to be done!” Most people don’t realize what is involved in publishing a yearbook. In the fall, the first order of business is schedul- ing senior pictures and choosing a theme for the yearbook. As we tackled those jobs, the photographers were busy shooting pictures of the fall sports, in addition to shooting unsuspecting victims for the opening pages. The sports committee’s jobs seemed never ending as the sports changed with the seasons. They were in charge of schedul- ing team pictures and senior highlights. Scott Koontz was confronted with a big job this year, as the designer of the cover and divider pages. Keeping the finances in order and launching the sales campaign were the jobs of the sales committee. The unique faculty pages emerged from the ideas of the homeroom and faculty committees. Many afternoons were spent taking pictures of our fearless faculty impersonating directors. As the pictures were developed and the articles typed, the staff was kept busy designing original layouts for the pages of the yearbook. Finally, as the year drew to a close, so did the pages of the book. The graduation and prom pages were completed and sent to the publisher and the proud staff gave a sigh of relief as the final deadline was met. 40 41 Copy Editor: J. Gallikcr, Asst. Editor: C. Rowe. Key Club is a community service organization which is comprised of dedicated high school students who volunteer their time and talent in order to better the community. This club is affiliated with the Westwood Kiwanis Club and members attend the local chapter’s weekly meetings at Sun- nehanna. This year. Key Club was busy from September to June. Keeping with tradition, the members took the responsibility of raising the American flag each morning. State Senator Mark Singel, a former Westmont Key Club member, start- ed a new tradition as he presented a Pennsylvania flag to be raised along with the American flag. During the fall, var- ious fundraising events were held, including a Monopoly-A- Thon, the annual cider sale, and a Spaghetti Dinner. Mem- bers also sold programs at Windber Stadium for West- mont’s Mountain Conference championship football game. The club was in full force at Christmas time as members ushered and worked as stage hands for the Johnstown Sym- phony’s production of “The Nutcracker Suite”, rang the bells in the Salvation Army Booths, and went caroling at the Presbyterian Home. Amid the various candy sales. Key Club struggled to sell lollipops to benefit the Heart Fund. When spring finally arrived, Key Clubbers were volun- teering their time for the Special Olympics and the Middle School’s Track and Field day. Key Club members have shown their dedication through- out the year and their efforts should be recognized. Thus, we honor Key Club as our “Club of the Year.” 50 Row 1: S. Antonazzo, L. Vore, K. With this introduction, the Phoenician staff would like to congratulate the clubs and advisors for all the time and effort they dedicated throughout the year. Take a bow! “Westy’s Whitehouse,” also known as Student Council, de- serves special applause for making the school year a success. Many clubs are only active for a portion of the year; however. Student Council moved at full throttle throughout the entire year. Student Council’s first assignment was conducting a sum- mer orientation day for the Ninth graders. They also sponsored Homecoming Week which included a day of “spirit” games, the crowning of the homecoming queen, and a dance which was the finale to the week's activities. In addition, they sponsored a bonfire. Parent’s Day, a Red Cross Blood Bank, and a school- wide magazine sale. Perhaps the most memorable event of the year was the chaotic comedy of the Valentine’s Day carnation sale, selling a record 750 flowers. Key Club was awarded “Club of the Year” for 1981-1982. The Phoenician staff set aside a page of the yearbook which was to be awarded annually to the most active and deserving club. The National Honor Society continued its tradition of Friday morning Dunkin’ Donut sales. Fall brought with it the induction of seniors into N.H.S. An original comedy entitled “WHIPS” was written and presented at the induction assembly. Eleven additional students were inducted. NHS sponsored an Engineer- ing Seminar, went Christmas caroling, and ran a computer com- patibility service. The latter event proved to be an overwhelming success. Students answered multiple choice questions concerning their likes and dislikes. The information was loaded into the computers and results were handed out with the names of people who were compatible with each other. In the Spring, twenty-one outstanding Juniors were inducted during an assembly in which members presented their own version of “Family Feud.” The final event was the annual Sub sale which was held at Subway this year. Art Club continued to be an active club again this year. Mem- bers spruced up the bird sanctuary during the first weeks of school and began designing the Halloween windows for the annu- al contest at Glosser Bros. Two teams represented Westmont, one of which received an Honorable Mention. A Christmas Boutique was held for which members made and sold Christmas crafts. In order to enhance the interior of the school. Art Club donated funds toward the framing of student art work. Also, track lighting was purchased for the murals in the entrance hall. Two bake sales were held to help fund a field trip to Carnegie Museum. Future Business Leaders of America, in its second successful year, sent two members, Kathy Fogel and Diane Merritts, to a summer workshop conducted at Elizabethtown College. The pur- pose of the workshop was to provide leadership training and to prepare programs of activities for the school year. FBLA partici- pated in a fall and spring leadership conference held at local high schools. At these conferences, several members qualified for the State Leadership Conference which was held in Lancaster, Pa. Members sold Strawberry Shortcake products to defer club ex- penses. Language Club, another popular activity, had a very eventful year. In December, the club held a banquet for foreign exchange students in the area. It also held various bake sales in order to sponsor a foster child in Guatemala. After a candy and sub sale, the club concluded its year with a trip to Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion. Theatre Club, continuing to grow in size, managed to execute four outstanding performances throughout the year. The first were two one-act plays entitled, “Mr. Flannery’s Ocean” and “The Bald Soprano.” In February, a receptive student audience enjoyed the efforts of Laurel Eatman, Amy King, Amy Glosser, and Lisa Ed in “The Effect of Man-In-The-Moon-Marigolds.” The full length play presented this year was “The Curious Sav- age.” A new organization was chartered this year. The establishment of the International Thespian Society included an induction cere- mony and the institution of a ghost light on the stage at West- mont. The most deserving members were awarded the infamous New York City trip in late April. Pep Club put forth a valiant effort in hopes of restoring school enthusiasm. Special theme days were held throughout the year. During Homecoming week, Sunshine, Western, Greaser, Tie, and Red and Gray days were held. Students dressed according to the theme of the day. A senior pep rally was held recognizing all seniors who participated in a varsity sport this year. For the first year at Westmont, target games were sponsored. The purpose of these games was to gain more student support at vital games and matches during the season. Finally, as Spring approached. Pep Club held a Jump Into Spring Week which included a Future College Day (students wore their college sweatshirts), Westy Day (students wore Westmont apparel), and Spring Dress-up day. A.M. Westy, Westmont’s very own morning radio station had great plans at the onset of the year. However, due to outdated equipment, many hopeful improvements became impossible. A.M. Westy’s disc jockeys kept the student body informed on morning announcements, sports news, and happy ads. The Rifle Club was one of the largest clubs in the school, but perhaps one of the most unnoticed. They deserve recognition as 73 members fired every Friday at the rifle range. The top ten shooters made up the rifle team which had two matches, both against Indiana. Westmont’s hard- working Scholastic Quiz team was also dis- appointed this year. After many months of practice, the club had only to learn that WJAC-TV would no longer be sponsoring the Scholastic Quiz competition. It was a shame to learn since West- mont had always proven to be strong in the competition. Those who practiced so diligently are to be commended for their dedi- cated work. 62 G GIL IF TEAM J. The team also participated in the Rough Rider Tri-State Invitational. This highly competitive tournament includes eight teams from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan. Todd Thiele was awarded with many honors throughout the year. He received medalist honors in all but one match, took first place in both districts and sectionals, and finished second in the state tournament. This year Todd was the only golfer from Pennsylvania to be named to the Junior All-American Golf team and played in a tournament in Tarpon Springs Florida. The girls finished the season in a commendable second place. Amy King and Wendy Rovensek, who played the first double matches, qualified for Districts in Altoona. Amy secured the first singles slot with Wendy hot on her heels playing second singles. Other team members who experienced competition were Amy Glosser, third singles, Marlene Calderon, fourth singles, Jackie Kul- lick, who played awesome second doubles with Amy Glosser, and Joann Frick, fifth singles. Mrs. Sue Minchau coached the girls this year. Her enthusiasm and dedication spirited the girls to a winning season. The squad finished with an 8-2 record, were co- champions of the Big “7” League, and pnded one game shy of the Mountain Conference title. The coaches knew the team had the potential for an outstanding season from the beginning, but were unsure of the team’s atti- tude. By the season’s final game, there was no mistaking the attitude as the team generated more school spirit than Westmont has seen in years. Coach Sherlock believes next year’s team has the po- tential to equal, if not surpass this year’s team. Seven seniors received awards for their accomplish- ments during the season. Shawn Dorian rushed for over 1,000 yards and passed the 2,000 yard rushing mark for his career. Shawn was named to the Mt. Conference All- Star team. For his efforts on and off the field, Dave Swedler received the Tribune-Democrat Player Scholarship Award. Other award winners included Dave Williams and Pat McQuillan, who were named Big “7” Offensive All- Stars. Dave Battaline and Tim Simanski were named Big “7” Defensive All-Stars and Mark Steeves was named to the Mt. Conference All-Star team. Right from the start the coaches knew the team had the potential to play good, exciting football. The boys proved themselves by capturing the Mountain Conference title. Their overall record was 5 wins, 0 losses, 1 tie. The team found success with a balanced attack of running, passing, and kicking. This year’s team was afflicted with more injuries than in past years, but these setbacks did not hamper the team’s success. These boys should prove invalu- able to the varsity teams in the coming years at Westmont. 72 73 Rifle Club: Seated: S. Martin, W. Paul, M. Herdman. Row 1: G. Lloyd, E. Dosch. Row 2: D. The girls started the season winning only one of their first six games but finished the season by winning eight of their last thirteen games. The team showed constant improve- ment and an ability to play against all types of competition. The team was led by a very experienced group of seniors who provided the necessary leadership. Sue Brownlee, for the second consecutive season, led the team in scoring and rebounding and received “Central Western League All- Star Team” honors for the second time. Miss Leibfreid attributes the success of the team to the girls’ self confidence and tremendous enthusiasm. The girls compensated for a weak offense by playing excellent defense. The team finished with a regular season record of 9-3. The team participated in the Portage Tournament in post- season play, where they finished in a disappointing fourth place. One bright spot of the tournament was Trisha Bar- ber’s selection to the All-Tourney team. The Hilltoppers brought hockey back to the War Memorial and attracted fans from the entire Johnstown area. Mark Steeves was the leading scorer for the second con- secutive season. Senior Pat McQuillan was second in scor- ing and was also named to the league All-Star Team. Other seniors providing leadership for the squad included Shane Getz, T.J. Five girls attended the meet; Lori Todorich took third place honors in the 100 yd. butterfly and Freshmen Patricia Bar- ber and Laura Dewar captured third and fifth places re- spectively in the 50 yd. freestyle. The 400 yd. free relay, comprised of C. Barber, L. Todorich, L. Dewar, and P. Barber, captured second place to advance to Penn State for the State Championship. Jamy Galliker was the fifth com- petitor. The team looks hopeful for future years because of the great ability of the underclass. Being a second year sport, the swimmers lacked support from the student body but look for more enthusiasm and school spirit for next year. 84 85 This season a number of swimmers showed outstanding performances and continual improvement in individual events despite a disappointing 0-5 season. Many of the swimmers qualified for District competition which was held in Altoona. Junior John Dunn placed first in the 100 yd. breaststroke, third in the 50 yd. freestyle, and swam breaststroke in the medley relay. His first place finish at Districts qualifed him for the State competition at Penn State. Senior Keith Barnhart swam the 50 and 500 yd. freestyle and anchored the medley relay. The 400 yd. free relay team which included Paul Rit- chey, Greg Rummel, Jim Gardill, and John Weir also swam in Districts. The boys were able to win the first and second place points in meets throughout the season, but suffered overall because they needed more swimmers to pick up the remaining points. The new coach, Denny Hartnett, feels that the boys did a remarkable job for being such a small, inexperienced team. The future looks promising as veteran swimmers will be joined by potential stars from the underclass. West. With only two returning letterman, the team lacked experience at the Varsity level. Coach Balogh felt the team made some progress during the season but did not mature mentally or physically as he expected. Todd Bukovich led the team in scoring with 241 points and Bob Gegan topped the rebounding charts, averaging 6.5 per game. The outlook for next year is good with six returning lettermen including the leading scorer and rebounder and a group of outstanding players from the Freshmen team. Being defeated by one team only, Richland High School, who placed second in the state, the Lady Scarlets saw no other competition. Miss Leibfreid, coach of the girls, attributes much of their success to the girls team attitude. “They were successful because they had respect for each other. No one ever blamed another when an error was committed. They really seemed to enjoy playing together.” For the first time in three years, the team entered the District Playoffs. The girls won their first match against the previously undefeated Homer Center. As a result of their victory the girls met Richland in the semi-finals, where the Scarlets lost, but not without a tremendous effort. Most of the varsity play was seen by eight girls. Yvonne Fetter- man was team captain, and contributed with her serving and back line ability. Jennifer Estadt, co-captain, was a hitter and played back line exceptionally well. Sue Estadt played all over the court and was outstanding as a hitter. The hitting attack was led by Patty Carnell who is one of the best spikers in the district. The team had four specialists; Donna Curtis was an excellent server and back line player; Betsy Pudliner served and played back line with tremendous enthusiasm; Karen Sewak skillfully played the difficult position of middle hitter; and Lisa Galasso was the setter. Because she seldom missed a set, the team credits her with much of its success. Kristi Hughes, Chris Aikey and Wendy Rovansek also saw much varsity action. With the loss of only two seniors and the return of six letterman. Coach Leibfreid sees the possibility of Westmont as District Cham- pions. First year coach Linda Rehn was pleased with the girls progress throughout the year. She stated, “The girls worked very hard and played together well as a team.” The coach picked Westy's Deanne Curtis as the league’s outstanding player. Miss Rehn also commented on the excellent setting ability of Leigh Aikey and Michele Esserman. The team also car- ries a J.V. squad. The Junior Varsity matched the Varsi- ty mark, finishing with a 6-6 record. Ron 1: K. McQuillan, R. Stccg. K. Mcllwain, W. Hunter. Row 2: Stat. T. Yoder, J. Galliker, D. Fleck. D. King. S. Brownlee. Kim looks to heaven for help. 101 Mr. Harchik 102 Although seven school records were broken, the Girl's Track team finished their season with a mediocre 4-4 re- cord. The girls were able to place second or third in most events but lacked the first place finishes needed to win the meets. Lori Blackburn broke the school record in the 200 meter and 400 meter dashes and was a member of the record breaking 1600 meter relay team along with Carolyn Barber, Trisha Barber, and Dana Vore. Dana also shattered the 1600 meter mark, knocking nearly a minute off the old record. Kim Mcllwain set the new record for the 3200 meter run in the first meet but was put on the sidelines midway through the season with a leg injury. In the field, Wendy Hunter broke the discus record, and Sue Brownlee fractured the triple jump record by two feet. A new event, the 300 meter hurdles, was established this year for girls. Karen Sewak set the inaugural record. Twelve girls qualified for districts. Lori Blackburn re- ceived a bronze medal in the 200 meter dash and placed fourth in the 400 meter dash. Sue Brownlee received a bronze medal in the triple jump. With the loss of eleven members due to graduation, next year should prove to be a rebuilding year for Girl’s Track. This year’s Boys Track team enjoyed its best season in 12 years, ending with a 7-7 record. This even season can be attributed to good participation and enthusiasm by all members of the team. For the first time since 1969, the boys won a double dual meet by defeating Homer Center and Bishop Carroll. Several school records were broken this year. They in- clude: 800 meter run by Mike Kelly; 300 intermediate hurdles by Mike Miller; 400 meter relay (Keith Nash, Mike Miller, Mike Kelly, and Tim Papinchak); and 3200 meter relay (Brian Gonda, Craig Eckstein, Mike Kelly, and Scott Koontz). All members of the team showed much improvement over last year and many talented underclassmen should provide the foundation for a successful team in the coming years. Eight members of the team qualified for districts. Wes- ty’s only placewinner was Dave Abernethy who finished fourth in the discus throw. 106 BCYS SEEVE SEASON The Boys’ Tennis Team enjoyed a successful season this spring, under the guidance of Coach Lance Chanda. The team was considerably better than their record showed, due to problems with the nets and lack of practice time. Howev- er, this year’s 7-7 overall record is a considerable improve- ment over last year. This year’s team had a lot of depth and numerous players received court time. D. Rugh Kerin, Mike King, Greg Suppes, Rooney Gleason, John Penrod, Scott Leffler, Shane Getz, Matt Schweitzer, and Stan Stept all shared the top five spots. The team also included freshmen Mike Keeney, Steve Fattman, Brant Miller, and Paul Bunn. D. Rugh Kerin and Mike King represented the team at Dis- trict singles, and the doubles teams of Kerin-King, and Schweitzer-Leffler participated in District competition The Mixed doubles teams of Amy King-John Penrod and Amy Glosser-Greg Suppes also participated at Districts. 107 Vo-Tech Johnstown Forest Hills Bishop McCort Somerset Indiana Vo-Tech Hollidaysburg Johnstown Forest Hills Hollidaysburg Bishop McCort Somerset Indiana 7-0 3- 4 5-2 4- 3 1-6 5- 2 7-0 0- 7 3- 4 5-2 1- 6 4- 3 2-5 2-5 108 Ron 1: S. Over half of the runs scored by the opposition were the result of fielding and throwing errors. This, coupled with the fact that timely hits were hard to come by, resulted in a very mediocre 4-6 season record and a 0-1 record in the Vo-Tech tournament. A few bright spots did exist though: Shawn Dorian led the team in game winning hits (3) and RBI’S (11); Dave Williams led the team in batting average (.423); and Keith Wood led the pitchers in strikeouts (51). With each of the other members of the team playing in at least two ballgames, next years’ team should not lack the varsity experience that this years’ team did and will hope- fully put Westy on top again. 110 Ill Row I: Asst. Kelly Dorian led the team in base hits and Tina Holtz led in homeruns and RBI's. By the end of the season, things became brighter when the girls defeated both Windber and Richland by more than ten runs each. With the return of seven starters, next year's team should have the necessary experience to produce a winning season. 113 J.V. SIPCKTS WP4P-UP ■ The J.V. Football team opened with a victory at Windber. The team was impressive in its first outing in holding Windber to a single first down. The Hilltoppers charged into their next outing which was a home game with North Star. In a very unusual and very ‘physical’ game, the North Star team walked off the field with less than two minutes remaining. This resulted in a Westmont victory 2-0. Somerset will be the game the players will remember as a “Referee’s decision” losing 7-6 on a very controversial and incorrect call. Their next loss was to a powerful Indiana team 7-6. The Hilltoppers finished the 2nd half without the services of either tackier. Playing at home the Westy J.V.’s humbled Conemaugh Valley 33-0, and then lost a squeaker in the mud to an undefeated Richland team 6-0. The Richland game was played in four to six inches of mud and ‘darkness’! The players on the 1981 J.V. Football team had the chance to go undefeated but they let it get away. So close but no rose! The 1981 version of the girl’s J .V. Basketball opening was less than spectacular. After opening losses to Altoona, Indi- ana, and Johnstown, the girls finally found the winning way. Lead by team high scorer, Tina Holtz and captain Yvonne Fetterman, the team found its winning combination. Showing some razzle-dazzle ball handling, was Kelly Burns and rounding out the rebounding combination was Carolyn Barber. Scoring a clutch win over Richland and relatively easy wins over Ligonier Valley, Windber, and Vo- Tech, the team finally got the ball rolling. A double loss to Indiana was not only a game loss, but also the loss of Tina Holtz with a rib injury for several games. The second half brought revenge. A win over Johnstown and breeze wins against Richland, Ligonier Valley, Vo- Tech Windber, Penn Cambria, and Ferndale. Losses again occurred against Chestnut Ridge and Bishop McCort. This year’s J.V. team shows the potential of forming the strong nucleus of next year’s Varsity team, which should show strong in next year league play. The 1981-82 J.V. Basketball season proved to be an interesting and exciting one as they lost 8 games by four points or less and ended their season with a 10-13 record. The overall talent and dedication was evenly distributed among each player and when their opportunity came, they did their best. They worked hard and even through difficult times, maintained their motto “We win with pride, and we lose with pride.” The future is certainly bright and promis- ing for these fine and talented young men, and we are very proud of them! The Westmont J.V.’s wound up a good season with a record of 14-3. The wrestlers were most impressive at the end of the season, as they won their last six matches con- secutively. The key factor to the J.V. success this year was depth, a factor that should become characteristic of West- mont in the future. The depth of the team next year should be even better with the crop of Freshmen jumping to the high school squad. In 7 of the 14 victories, 9 or more wrestlers won their bouts. The J.V. squad also recorded 3 shut-outs. The only tournament action of the season pro- duced a second place team trophy. Doug Brown, Matt Sherbine, and Rich Glass were tourney champions. Some of the J.V.’s of this year’s squad should play instru- mental roles in the success of the Varsity next year. We’ll be looking forward to another good season of wrestling at Westmont. The J.V. Girl’s Volleyball team ended its season with a record of 13-2. Although they had two losses, each came from a different team; meaning that the girls gave Rich- land’s J.V. their first loss in over two years. The success of this year's team cannot be attributed to any one player, each did an outstanding job. Kristie Hughes was a hitter and a very good server; Chris Aikey had the best all-around serve on the team; Wendy Rovansek and Lisa Swedler led the team with their excellent sets; Katie Orr spiked well, especially in the Richland match; Vicki Gillin showed much enthusiasm on the court and helped to win many games; perhaps the most improved player was Kristin Nitkulinec who always had an encouraging word for everyone. With a record like this, future Varsity Volleyball teams look good for Westmont. ifi r ENROLLMENT V° 4S FRESHMEN ENTER THE HIGH SCHOOL HCMERCCH 2©1 Row 1: D. Davies, L. Dietrich. Row 2:S. Berkley, C. They set and carried out new goals. Some stu- dents took charge in directing, and others held back because of stage fright. All came into place as the curtain fell.
