The admission of the Freshman class and additions in faculty have altered the face of Westmont. The release of the hostages from Iran was the event of the year. Lennon and Bonham left us, leaving empty spaces in our mourning minds. Faculty and students alike adjusted to new conditions and new facilities. In the mood of these new circumstances, we present... METAMORPHOSIS. Transformation, change, alteration, modifi- of preparation nears its end, we reflect upon cation, conversion, adaptation. As the time some of the pleasant memories of our stay. Faces and events that will never be forgotten and classrooms were stages for dramas that for many years to come. A modification of sports and new activities. All this for the our school from the inside; new students, new student. A Renaissance for our school. A new birth of school spirit that is Westmont, the 1981 Phoenician. He lived his life to the fullest extent. Larry spent such a limited amount of time with us; but thinking of his smile, and knowing he left us a happy person, makes his death all the easier to accept. The schedule we follow seems so terribly ritualistic. Hardly ever do we find more than five students seated before 7:49 A.M. When everyone eventually meandors into the room it is rare to find them in their correct seats, and there is always someone hanging at the door soon after the bell rings. During role, the predictable blast of A.M. Westy over the intercom results in moans from those conversing of the past evenings events. In- evitably the birthday announcements bring silence, and no day could begin without seeing the expressions of those who have forgotten their pink or yellow slips. . . . Ahh the bell!!! Free for 4 minutes and then on to first period. Patty Blasko 36 HOMEROOM 210 Row 1: E. Henry, C. Gibson, M. Gallo, J. Freddes. Row 2: J. Galliker, S. Groves, N. Finney, Mr. Grubb. Row 3: L. A minute before the bell rings, homeroom 216 is scarcely populated. The few already in are cramming for a chemistry test or doing their English homework for 1st period. Twenty seconds before the bell, a herd of stu- dents trample into the room. As the bell rings, one can hear the eternal voice of Mrs. Goerlich saying, Brian, sit down. As the class settles, A.M. Westy bellows over the loud speaker. A soft moan echoes throughout the room. The only time the moans get louder is the time when the student council minutes are read. But one shouldn't think this is a boring homeroom. There's al- ways talk of yesterdays' sporting events: an eyewitness account of the girls' tennis team from Mrs. Goerlich or the inside story on the hockey team from T.J. As the bell rings, a slight stampede occurs. And then there are the few left still cramming, but they are soon to leave also. Karen Rovder 39 HOMEROOM 212 Row 1: D. Sturtz, R. Steeg, D. Swedler. The only time to study was be- fore the rush of kids come in. At 7:40 only four or five people are in the room. Some of them studying for their first period tests and some just soaking up the B.T.U.'s (British Thermal Units) which are pretty abundant. At 7:45 Donna Curtis walks in and four people immediately surround her desk asking for last night's English home- work. Sue Berkley and Rene Byrne are practicing their marching drills, and David Cohn is reading pamphlets concerning Alcoholics Annonymous. Todd Bukovich hobbles in on crutches and blurts out a string of lewdi- ties at Greg Asfar, who is playing a Santana bongo drum tune on his desk. One minute before the bell rings about ten people come in. Jeff Crawford slips past Mr. Puhala without an excuse from the day before. Judy Carney and Lori Babik enter the room and discuss how they are supplying themselves for the ski trip to Blue Knob. The bell rings and the class rises for a half-hearted attempt to pledge the flag. At 7:53 Rob DeWaters walks in late. Wendy Critchfield asks where Dan Ayres is today and somebody replies, Don't you know, it's his month off! Then the bell rings to leave, everybody rushes to the door in a stampede. Mr. Puhala puts his book down and says, good-bye , and starts his day. Rob DeWaters 41 HOMEROOM 206 Row 1: K. Hugya, M. Kaplaniak, B. Hunt, L. Hofe, L. Jerva, P. Kime, Mrs. Kushnir. Row 2: T. HOMEROOM 204 What happens in Homeroom 204 .First, the morning starts with a mad rush to make it to homeroom before the bell rings. When the students finally get there, Mr. Peschock is standing at his podium marking down who is late. No one ever cuts loose during homeroom, everyone sits in their desks with their head down and grovels. Linda Green talks non-stop during the entire period. No one has ever heard anyone talk so much. Bridget Han- son and Fred Hamaty always talk about what happened the day before. Mr. Peschook starts to say the pledge, even though half of the class doesn't stand. Amy Glosser tells Yvonne Fetterman that she owes her $2.50. Jennifer Estadt is always complaining how she flunked a test, but the strange part about it is she got a B . Homeroom 214 starts with everybody hanging out- side the door until ten seconds before the bell rings. During these last ten seconds, Aric Wilson, John Walko, and John Tredennick are standing outside the door to see how many girls they can check out before they have to sit down for six minutes. When everyone sees Mr. Mintmier getting out his seating chart, the crowds of gossiping girls and the loud conversations of guys, break up. Usually, then, you'll find John Walko taking Leah Vore's stool because he doesn't have one, and you'll always find Leah running to get Nancy Stumpo's cul- tures homework. After the first two minutes while all of this is occuring, everything gets pretty dull and boring except for John Walko fighting with Haley Wallace. When A.M. Westy comes on, everybody just sits there and goes, Oh NO! Our homeroom is a dud whenever anything is being sold. Tim Urban us usually discussing his girl problems with Leah while Nancy Town's mouth never stops working. Tim Yoder is always asking someone for a pencil and Greg Suppes is trying to impress anyone with one of his great stories. Finally with the sound of the bell to go to first period the radical students of homeroom 214 depart for the day. Leah Vore 46 Row 1: Mrs. Pudliner, C. Engel, A. DiFrancesco, D. Ciel, E. Dosch. HOMEROOM 104 I will always remember Homeroom one hundred four. I don't know why, but it represents work and re- creation all at once. During homeroom there is a re- laxed mood which is essential to getting ready for class. The mood is controlled by a competent teacher who doesn't let things get out of hand. Also, in the room are poor students who try to finish their homework with limited time. In the room are computers which pose as educational aids, helpful machines, and to teachers, an- noying toys. A variety of activities are performed by the students in the room. Upper classman taking tests, and using the computers and teachers doing their work. Many stu- dents enter the room at different times. The students in the homeroom give life to it. They fill the room with discussions, jokes and debates. This makes school a less dreary place, consequently making life more enjoyable. Svet Grgurevich Row 1: ]. Darr, D. Greenwood, M. Cilles, M. Fisher, R. Grimes. Row 2: ). Freiwald, C. Frick,). Evans. Homeroom 106 has been a class of consistency. Every morning when the bell rings, Lance Moran is late, Chris Nash is told to shut up, Greg Niel owes $2.50 on a library book, and Kristin Miller needs a pencil because she always takes hers home. After things get moving, which doesn't take long, Mr. Cartwright waves his hand like a magi- in cian trying to hypnotize someone, and tries to make everyone get up to say the pledge to the flag. No one pays attention until someone decides to get up. The pledge takes 13 seconds; usually it's inter- rupted by a blaring voice, GOOD MORNING FROM A.M. WESTY ... Someone has had a belated birthday, and Pinky took a nap on the bus. It's always a private joke. The bell rings and everyone leaves (except for the flies; cockroaches, and ants.) Too bad their sec- ond period class, or any other period, isn't as unique as homeroom — or is it ...? Greg Niel 49 Homeroom 107 Row 1: C. Smith, N. Penrod, W. Paul, C. Pejack, K. Snyder, K. Mr. Rudnac attented Pitt and taught in a pre- dominantly black school in Pittsburgh. If you are ever walking down the hall behind him, don't be surprised to see him looking over his shoulder. Most of the so-called students in 103 do not know how to study or to be quiet. They also have a great deal of trouble remembering their excuses when they are absent. When homeroom gets started, one will probably find Mary Camut with her jacket on, Warren Cardiff, Greg Clemenson and Collette Christner running at the mouth about very little that matters to anyone else and Craig Bokros staring into thin-air. For those who talk too much, Mr. Rudnac has a voice that goes right through them. (In one ear and right out the other) Other stu- dents in the homeroom observe the non-happenings that go on while Geoff Boltz and Meredith Ceh study their hearts out. The swim team's inaugural season saw the girls cap- ture runner-up honors in District Six, while the boys finished at 5-7. At the District Championship Meet, Chris Camut won the 50 and 100 yard Freestyle events, setting new re- cords in each. He was also named Outstanding District Six Swimmer. In Addition, John Dunn took first in the 100 yard Breaststroke. Both Chris and John competed in the State Championships held at Penn State. Other finishes included: The Girl's Medley and Frees- tyle Relay, third, Angela DiFransesco, third in both the 500 Freestyle and 100 yard Butterfly events, and Lori Todorich, fourth in the 200-Individual Medley and fifth in the 100-Butterfly. Because of the lack of a permanent home, the Hilltop- pers were forced to practice at the Y.M.C.A. and hold all of their meets away. Next year, coach Brian Moore looks forward to several home contests. Hopefully, in the years to come, Westmont will emerge as a swimming power. Row 1 ) Galliker, B. Donley, G. Long, K. Orr, K. Marshalled by Captain Mike Chabon, the school's first 1000-yard gainer, the squad upended sev- eral tough competitors. After a rocky start and a heart- breaking last-second defeat by rival Richland, the squad rebounded, collecting three consecutive victories. In two games, last minute heroics spelled V-l-C-T-O- R-Y. Against Conemaugh Twp., 53 ticks remained when Fred Mulkey collected a Mike Chabon toss for the score (W-6, CT-0). The closing contest against Bedford was dominated by a rain-and-mud-soaked field, but with 1:22 left to play, Q.B. Dave Williams acted like a sur- geon as he operated on the Bison defense. He complet- ed two passes to Chris Camut before his final strike. Only 20 seconds glowed on the clock when Williams again connected with Camut in the end zone. Home- coming saw the squad pummel Windber 40-14. Super- back Mike Chabon churned up 271 yards and scored three Td's as he dismantled the Rambler Defense. Coach Sherlock was pleased with the enthusiam dis- played throughout the season, and with a host of re- turning underclassmen, the team hopes to keep the football program, on the winning road. 72 9TH GRADE FOOTBALL: UNBEATABLE! The high powered offense generated 173 points while the scrooge-like defense limited the opposition to 14. The Hilltoppers' undefeated season included triumphs over perennial winners Bedford and Forest Hills. The junior high competitors notched four straight shutouts before the Bisons of Bedford recorded a tally. In that contest the team rallied from an 8-6 deficit in the fourth quarter when Q.B. Gregg Boring fired a 70 yard touchdown strike to Todd Purich, carrying the squad to a 12-8 victo- ry. Before the defeat by Westmont, the Bisons closest competitor could only manage a 34-0 trouncing. The leading scorers were Todd Purich, Scott Pyshnik, and Pete Ham. In fighting for the top five spots, Joy emerged in the number one position followed by Laurie Chidester, Sue Bartle, Kathy Davis, Jeanne Duncan, Laura Bunn, Jenny Little and Amy King (who all shared court duty). The championship match against Bishop McCort last- ed a grueling three hours in fifty degree weather, but adversity only made the four to three triumph sweeter. Joy also took top honors in District Six competition, becoming the first area girl to do so. By virtue of an upset victory over top-seeded Bessie Paragas of State College, Sue advanced to the final round where she defeated Andrea Hatch of Altoona, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3. Also representing Westmont at Districts were the doubles teams of Laura Bunn Sue Bartle and Kathy Da- vis Laurie Chidester. Each team came up against tough competition in the first round and were eliminated. Under the direction of Coach Colleen Goerlich, the team expects to continue it's winning tradition with five returning letter winners next season. 83 GOLF TEAM STEERS WINNING COURSE 84 Coach: Mr. Sheldon Hunter, T. Thiele, D. Picking, R. Leppert, M. Esserman, D. Yerger, J. Patrick, J. Criswell. Yerger taps another perfect putt. The Westmont golf team captured yet another league championship enroute to an undefeated season. The winning tour also included four shutouts in nine match- es. Paced by senior, Dave Yerger, and junior Todd Thiele, the Hilltoppers placed third among the best high school teams in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Local dominance took the form of a victory in the Wheeling Tournament. Todd Thiele, Dave Yerger, Dan Picking and Robbie Leppert were the team members who com- peted for the title. Both Yerger and Thiele collected numerous individ- ual honors. In District Six competition each earned a medal for his efforts. Statewide Yerger was again a medal winner, finishing eighth. Special congratulations go to Todd Thiele who won the Pennsylvania State Jr. Ama- teur Title. Under the direction of Sheldon Hunter, the team has won a total of ten league trophies since 1969. 85 THERE'S ALWAYS NEXT YEAR . . . The Girls' Varsity Basketball Team ended their season with a 4-16 record, exactly opposite of what they had hoped for. They believed they would probably not win their division but would play a strong role in determin- ing the eventual winner. Unfortunately, early season injuries to key players made it difficult to play at full potential. But once the team was healthy and ready to play, they competed with determination, intensity and confidence. (During the last three weeks of the season they played at a .500 clip) They placed second in the Ferndale Lions Club Tournament and won consolation honors at the Bishop McCort Crusher Classic. Several girls were awarded honors throughout the year. Anna Shahade was the team's second leading scor- er and was selected as an Honorable Mention member of the Central Western League. Karen Tanase led the team in rebounds and was selected to the All- Tourna- ment Team at Ferndale. Barb Salem led the team in assists, and Karen Sewak paced the team in steals. Sue Brownlee led all scoring with 224 points and placed second in rebounds, steals and assists. She was named to the All- Tournament Teams in Ferndale and Bishop McCort Tournaments as well as being named Outstand- ing Offensive Player at McCort. She was also named to the Second Team All Stars in the Central Western League. Front: Y. Fetterman, K. Sewak, S. Folsom, L. Kohler, B. Salem, A. Shahade, K. Dorian. Back: P. Carnell, H. Wallace, C. The ninth grade girls' basketball team compiled an 11- 0 regular season record, but met with disappointment in the playoffs, losing the championship contest to Bishop Carroll, 37-31. As an entry in the Portage Tournament, the team downed the host school, but unfortunately locked horns with Bishop Carroll again in the final round, losing for a second time. Named to the All-Tournament team were Kelli Burns, Lisa Galasso, and Tina Holtz. Burns was also selected as the tournament's most valuable player. In regular season play the tandem of Burns and Galasso provided 309 markers. Coach Doris Leibfreid said the girl's should continue to improve as they enter varsity basketball. 88 Coach: Miss D. Leibfreid, L Galasso, S. Martin, C. Bartosik, M. Antonik, T. Holtz, M. Christner, S. Green, K. Burns, C. Aikey, K. Labosky, M. Weir, L. Swedler. 89 GIRLS' FASTBREAK TO VICTORY The Girls' Junior Varsity Basketball team concluded their season with an outstanding 14-2 record. The girls played an exciting brand of run and gun basketball and clearly dominated all but a few of the games from start to finish. Nita Kohler, Roberta Smith, Wendy Hunt- er and Joann Frick supplied the experience and leader- ship necessary for a winning team. Carolyn Barber, Patty Carnell, Yvonne Fetterman and the juniors controlled the boards in almost every game which enabled Kelly Dorian to break on the shot. Because of the efforts of her teammates, Kelly was able to be high scorer in 13 of 16 games. The future looks bright for Westmont girls basketball. This hustling Junior Varsity Team along with the return- ing Varsity players and those moving up from the top- rated Freshman Team should provide many hours of exciting basketball in the year ahead. Which way did they go? 90 H. Wallace, Y. Fetterman, A. Kohler, J. Frick, P. Carnell, Coach: Mr. Tom Mintmier, Ass't Coach: Miss Pat Bahneman, C. Barber, R. Smith, W. Hunter, K. Sewak, K. Dorian. A GOOD EF- Despite a record of 8-14, the Junior Varsity Basketball team had a good year. Led by Chris Marshall and Todd Bukovich with 162 points each and Tim Urban with 166 rebounds, the team played better than their record showed. Injuries and illness contributed to a seven game losing streak. It took contributions from the entire team to overcome the difficulties. Some of the teams impressive games were a 57-35 win over Vo-Tech ending the seven game losing streak. At one point during the game Westmont led by 20-0. Westmont also beat a tough Forest Hills team at home but lost in four overtime periods in the visitor's gym. Coach Dennis Colbert states “Many of the players could help next years varsity team. 91 BOYS' VARSITY BASKETBALL — Incon- sistent. Front: Coach: Mr. Jim Balogh, D. Williams, T. Urban, B. Groves, P. The '80-'81 Varsity Basketball Season could best be summed up in one word — INCONSISTENT. Finishing with a regular season record of 11-15, the team played outstandingly against tough opponents, while less in- tense against weaker clubs. For the first time in twelve years, our squad defeated the Richland Rams. Perhaps even more important than the victory was the fantastic crowd support at that and other home games. The starting team consisted of seniors David Tschachler, Paul Smith, David Yerger and Bruce Groves and junior Paul Matsko. Also earning letters and provid- ing leadership were Dave Williams and Keith Wood. Tschachler was the leading scorer with 489 points as well as the top rebounder with 336. Second in scoring was Paul Matsko as he totaled 298 points. The team may not have compiled an outstanding re- cord, but even if they lost every game, they developed character and friendships. They learned the meaning of we and team instead of me and I . This is defi- nitely more important than any win-loss record, for it will be something they can value after Westy, and isn't that what athletics is all about? 93 NINTH GRADE BOYS' BASKETBALL — Very Disappointing. Front: K. Smith, K. Leitenberger, J. Steeves, J. Gardill, J. Porter, B. Leckey,C. Smith. Back: Coach: Mr. Dave Benford, W. Reitz, P. Ham, S. Crgurevich, C. Boring, T. Sigmund, B. Shaffer, G. Ciemenson, Manager: J. Ozog. The '80-'81 season of the Boys' Ninth Grade Basket- ball Team was very disappointing, although its 6-9 re- cord bettered the expectations of many. Generally, the squad did not play up to its potential. Certainly the lack of school support, denoted by the low home game at- tendance, had a negative effect upon the team's perfor- mance. Mid-season was hampered by attitude prob- lems. High points were the two heated victories over Windber and several dazzling performances by Jeff Steeves. Steeves led the team with a ninth grade record high of 159 points. Following Steeves were Tom Sig- mund with 113 and Greg Boring with 85. Other starters were Pete Ham and Warren Reitz with Greg Ciemenson appearing often as the sixth man. The club's performance progressed markedly as the season drew to an end. It climaxed with a very strong home showing over Conemaugh Township in the final game. Post-season play consisted of participation in the Bedford Tournament. The players now look forward to next year with con- siderably more confidence. 94 J.V. WRESTLING The Junior Varsity wrestling team showed a great im- provement this year. The team ended the season with a 10-4 record. It was the first winning season for J.V. wres- tling in almost six years. Much of the credit has to go to the coach, J.P. Conway. This was his first year as J.V. Coach. In addition to their regular season matches, Westmont participated in two junior varsity tourna- ments. At the Holiday Tourney eight Westmont grapplers placed: First place — Andy Bowers, Charley Bowers, Mark Sherbine, John Walko, Aric Wilson and Chris Clark; Second Place — Chuck Minana and Rich Dezelon. Westmont did not do as well at the Somerset Tournament, having only one grappler, Andy Bowers, place second. With the exception of juniors Chris Clark and Charley Bowers and senior Rich Dezelon, the team was domi- nated by sophomores. The outlook for next year can be nothing but great, considering the team's youth and outstanding record this year. 95 Row 1: R. Dezelon, C. Minana, B. Rainey, C. Bowers, D. Stramanak, A. Bowers. You dance divinely. % Hilltop wrestling did an about face as the grapplers completed a successful 12-5 season, compared to last year's 3-11-1 mark. The lightweights Dennis Morder, Chris Henry, Dave Swedler and Todd Purich posted sixty-six wins, against fourteen setbacks and one draw, in twenty appearnaces. A weekly dispatch dubbed The Westmont Grappler followed the team's exploits. Individually, team co-captain Chris Henry finished undefeated (20-0-0), a new school record in dual meet competition. Also spotlighted was Mike Chabon, who upset a national prep-school champion from St. John's High School (Washington, D.C.), in the Altoona Triangu- lar Meet. In other mat action, the squad captured first place in the Conemaugh Township Holiday Tournament. Den- nis Morder, Chris Henry and Tim Yoder all placed No. 1 while quick pin honors went to Tim Budash who tum- bled Mike Crusco of Forest Hills in Thirty-three sec- onds. Special recognition is awarded to the six Hilltoppers who qualified for district play. They are: Dennis Morder (98 lbs.), Chris Henry (105 lbs.), Dave Swedler (112 lbs.), Todd Purich (119 lbs.), Mike Chabon (138 lbs.) and Tim Budash (HWT). Both Henry and Chabon won first place trophies at the District Six match held in Tyrone, qualifying them for Regionals. Coach Lantz's prospects look bright with many un- derclassmen returning next season. The Junior High wrestling squad sported a 5-2 record, finishing 3rd in their league. After racking up lopsided victories over Richland, Conemaugh Township, Ferndale, the team lost a heartbreaker to Ligonier Valley 32-40. Finishing the season with perfect won-loss records were ninth graders Chuck Frick, Scott Pyshnik, Al Thomas, Bob Fleck. In the post season Tourney held at Conemaugh Twp., the Tigers finished a strong 3rd behind Ligonier and Somerset. Frick, Thomas, Fleck all reigned as Champions. All in all the young wrestlers gained some much needed experience, as they prepared themselves for varsity competition. Like General MacArthur — they shall return. Row 1: T. Vore, L. Blackburn, D. Although the season did not turn out as well as hoped, the girls still enjoyed the excitement of the competi- tion. The team captain, Sue Donley, provided the neces- sary leadership needed for a successful season. The sen- iors, Barb Salem, Tami Morder and Lydia Kohler fur- nished the squad with seasoned experience and talent. The underclassmen played a vital role in the teams' suc- cess. Betsy Pudliner, Nita Kohler and Yvonne Fetterman were great assets to the back court which set the front line up perfectly. The spike attack was led by Patty Car- nell, Jennifer Estadt and other seniors and juniors. The Junior Varsity accumulated an outstanding 12-2 record. Led by some members of the varsity, the young team proved their domination over other J.V. teams. All those who saw either J.V. or Varsity team play had to be impressed with their vivacity and determination. The players returning for next year should provide an- other season of exciting volleyball. 99 J.V. Volleyball Junior High Volleyball Row 1: Miss Leibfreid, M. Antonik, R. Haupt, L. Calasso, L. The 9th grade girls' volleyball team, headed by Coach Doris Leibfreid, had a terrific season. They shared co-championship honors in the Conemaugh Valley League, posting a record of 8-2. Their two defeats at the hands of Richland and Forest Hills were disappointing, but they came back to win their last and most important match with Windber. Their most consis- tant and best server, with 51 aces, was Chris Aikey, who along with teammate Katy Orr finished with a 92% serving record. Fantastic sets by Lisa Galasso and Lisa Swedler, enabled Wes- ty's spikers, Vicki Gillin, Rhonda Haupt and Sue Estadt, to awe their opponents. The Junior Varsity team ended their season with a great record of 7-3. Congratulations to these girls, they showed us they could stick together as a team and pull through! 101 First Year Hockey Team — Success O say can you see ... Victory! Spunk cranks the puck. 102 The first year of the Westmont Hockey Team was a great success. The hockey team had a 11-10-2 season record and came in fourth place, only one point away from first place. The hockey team was in the AA Division playing all the AA teams once. They had six AAA losses compared with four AA losses. Coming into fourth place advanced them into the playoffs. They won their first playoff game over top ranked Hampton 5-2 which moved them into the finals against Allderdice. The team fought hard against Allderdice for the championship, but the Pittsburgh team pulled ahead to win the trophy. However, Westmont did place second in the playoffs bringing home a trophy of their own. This year's team was full of youth. Most of the team's strength lay in the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. There will be only two players not returning next year. They are West- mont's All-Star Scott Mardis who is a senior, and the team captain Mike Wetzel, who is moving. The hockey team was the talk of the school this year. Everybody was surprised how well they did. The team received a lot of support from their fans, with an average attendance of approximately 375 people. Hopefully, next year's team will do even better by winning the division championship and then moving into states. Front: S. Getz, R. Gleason, T.). Piro, W. Cardiff, D. Picking, G. Suppes, J. Custer 103 The boys' track and field team completed a disap- pointing 2-5 regular season record this year. The team had pride, determination and talent but couldn't man- age a winning season, despite their winning state of mind. All track records from previous years were broken due to the conversion to a metric track. One field re- cord was broken by David Good who managed to clear 5'11 in the high jump. Chris Camut was awarded Most Valuable Boys' Track Award. Chris participated in the 400 meter run and the Mile Relay team. He placed second at districts in the 400 meter which qualified him for states. David Long ex- celled in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter run in every meet. Marcus Cunningham, Tim Papinchak, Kevin Mill- er and Kirk Hughes comprised the 400 meter relay that threatened many of the other teams in the conference. David Abernathy sent the discus soaring 117' placing first in many meets and advancing to district competi- tion where he came in 5th. Coaches Don Stramanak and Milt Lantz are hoping for a more productive and victorious season next year with the return of many letter winners. Row 1: Coach, Don Stramanak, T. Papinchak, B. Berney, P. In addition to compiling a 7-2 regular season record, they won both the Westmont Invitational and the Mountain Conference Relay Meets. Lori Blackburn scorched the opposition enroute to her many victories this past season, including a first place finish at the Western Coaches Meet in Altoona. At the heels of Lori, came freshman Dana Vore, who prom- ises to be an invaluable part of next years team. The girls' again fielded winning relay teams, sending both the 1600 and 3200 meter squads to districts. Wes- ty's top 800 meter runner, Debbie King, also ran a leg on both district teams. Jamy Galliker broke the high jump record this season clearing a height of 4'11 and also ran on the 3200 meter relay team. Sue Brownlee soared in the Long Jump, breaking a school record despite the fact she was out for half of the season. Both head coaches Mrs. Carpenter and assistant coach, Mrs. Goerlich, look for repeat performances in the coming seasons. With numerous returning stan- douts, no one doubts them. 107 GIRLS' SOFTBALL: About Face Row 1; D. Cilles, B. Pudliner, K. Swanson, K. Dorian, T. Burns, N. Romanow, B. Salem. Row 2: C. Torp, A. Laurie Chidester led the charge by batting .667, pirating 11 bases, and turning in a .956 fielding average. Freshman, Tina Holtz, proved an able batsman by hitting .514 and carrying a .950 fielding aver- age. The highlight of the season came in the second con- test against Central Cambria. Trailing by one run in the bottom of the 7th, Tina Holtz cracked a Grand Slam lifting the Hilltoppers to a 9-8 victory. Hopes remain high for an even better showing next season. 109 BASEBALL — What a Steal 110 Row Is D. Stramanak, P. Mitchell, C. McLoota, S. Dorian, D. Williams, N. Patton, E. Crimes. Row 2: M. This year's 4-7 record was disappointing to say the least. The squad did not quite play up to Mr. Puhala's preseason expectations, though the team did have its moments. A near no-hitter, six hitters batting over .300, 36 stolen bases (including the record setting theft of home plate 4 times in one game), brought some encour- agement to the team. Except for ten run losses to Vo-Tech and Ferndale, Westmont could have easily turned the tables on their opponents. In fact, Westmont was actually winning in four of their other five loses. The seniors, Fred Mulkey, Chris McLoota, Bruce Groves, Scott Mardis, Mike Litterine, Bob Barcelos, Joe Kittka, Paul Mitchell and Mike Partsch wish all the re- turning underclassmen, who proved they could walk softly and carry a big stick, the best of luck next season. BOYS' TENNIS Westmont's Boys' Tennis Team was plagued not only by a late start this year, but also a very tight schedule caused by postponement of most of the matches due to bad weather. Coach Lance Chanda led the team to a 2- 10 record. The team was comprised of seniors Rich De- zelon, Scott Brownlee, and David Trevenen. Also in the starting five were D. Rugh Kerin, Rooney Gleason and Greg Suppes. Rich Dezelon and Scott Brownlee repre- sented the school in singles at districts and the teams of Dezelon-Brownlee, Gleason-Suppes, Kerin-Joy and Trevenen-Duncan competed in district doubles. The outlook for next year is good due to the experience gained by many of the non-starters. 112 TEAM RECORD VARSITY FOOTBALL Penn Cambria West. 8 Opp. 14 Richland 12 14 Ligonier 27 14 Forest Hills 0 20 Conemaugh Twp. 6 0 Central Cambria 12 0 Windber 40 14 Somerset 15 32 Bedford 20 14 J.V. Like the previous sixty graduat- ing classes, we embark on an odyssey. We scatter in our own respective directions; College, Work, or Military Service. Metamorphosis means change, and as in all other aspects of life, there is a beginning, a middle and an end. We stand at the midpoint. A perfect world is an illusion, but now, more than ever, the opportunity exists to be all that you can be , limited only by our desires and goals. This yearbook serves as a point of reference; like a calander from days gone by to rekindle memories. In a year marked by transition, we have faithfully tried to present a realistic view of Westmont Hilltop High School, nineteen-hundred eighty one A.D. 167 SENIOR DIRECTORY AZAR, MITCHELL GEORGE: Butch Key Club 11,12; Yodler 10,11,12 (Sports Editor): N.H.S. 12.
