Language Department Parlez-vous francais? Habla Espanol? Any student who has taken a foreign language at Westmont should recognize at least one of these phrases. If the English teachers on the Hill think they have a tough job, maybe they should try trading places with one of the foreign language teachers. How would you like to teach French or Spanish to a student who can’t even speak English yet? Seriously though, I wouldn't want either job. Communicating with students in any language is never an easy task. Our foreign language instructors do try though. They know what they’re talking about, even if it does sound foreign to most of us. Health and Safety Ed. The faculty members in this department put up with more excuses than any other teachers. I hurt my knee yesterday. I can’t run!” is a popular excuse for gym class. Or, Honestly, I had my notebook in my locker. 1 don’t know where it is now. is an excuse I’m sure the Health and Safety Ed. teachers have heard over and over. Mr. Burket is probably so sick of hearing, What stop sign? I didn't see it!” All in all though, we do learn from experience, and I'm sure these experiences will not be forgotten. Above: Shuffle ball chain. Let's go girls. Below: Mr. Balogh won the smiling contest this year. Above: Mr. Matsko looks on earnestly. Below: Can't you see that stop sign? 22

Do you know what he’s talking about?” I wonder how many students have asked that question while listening to one of Westmont's math teachers. Believe it or not, in spite of the homework, the surprize quizzes and the impossible formulas, most students do survive. While working on proofs, equations and ratios, most students are ready to give up. But in the end, most get by. And many are even surprised at how much they really did learn. 24
