1979 Phoenician Volume 59 Westmont Hilltop High School 200 Fair Oaks Drive Johnstown, Pa. 15905 Underclass Pg. 70 Academics Pg. 96 Faculty Pg. 14 Our Search through W.H.H.S. Seniors Pg. 146 Athletics Pg. 114 Activities Pg. 32 As that fated date of graduation nears, one begins to ask oneself, “What am I going to do for the rest of my life?” Some of us will go on to higher education, some will go out into the business world, some will marry, and some of us are still searching for what we want to do. After struggling through thirteen years of school, are we really ready to take that giant step out into the world? As we try to look ahead, into our future, we find it is easier to look into the past. Memories flash through our minds. We remember the good times throughout those thirteen years of school, as well as the bad. 7 12 Just as we begin to think that we are almost finally done with high school, do we realize that our search for the rest of our life is just beginning? 13 FACULTY Right: Dr. Strange Below: Mr. Mannion Board of Education And Administration Set School Policy Left: Dr. Estadt Below: (Seated) Mr. T. Gaynor. President: Dr. G. Estadt, Superintendent; Mr. W. Wolfe, Solicitor; Mrs.). Zimmerman; Mr. E. Kinkead; Dr. R. Swanson: Dr. J. Yerger. (Standing) Mr. J. Meredith: Mr. H. Layman; Mr. W. Jones. Secretary; Mr. J. Hargreaves; Mr. D. Gardill. Fine and Practical Arts Departments Mrs. Kebel — the brownies weren’t that bad! Now draw a straight line. Mr. Sosinski. 1 + 2 .. . 18 As far as the Fine and Practical Arts Departments are concerned, the students and faculty of Westmont can be proud. Cooking, sewing, singing and drawing are just a few course choices that students can make to add flavor to their day. Besides just offering these specialized classes, Westmont has instructors who will go to great lengths to help their students in these fields. Westmont can also be proud of the professional products and productions that the Fine and Practical Arts Departments contribute to the community. Along with the Art and Architecture projects, there are also the dramatic and musical productions, all of which help to enliven an otherwise monotonous year. I never sec that kind of girl when I'm at the beach. Oh — these childproof locks now-a-days. Mr. Bolton, what are you doing??! Below: Debits Business Education a-s-d-f-j-k-l-;-space. The typewriters never stop during the school hours at Westmont. Personal typing, secretarial and business courses are all part of the program. The teaching staff is always more than happy to accommodate students' needs in the business classroom. Some of the courses offered at Westy are Bookkeeping, Accounting, and Distributive Education, better known as the work-study program. Above: If I find one error ... and credits, not or. Above: Yes, there are only 151 days left.” Below: Teacher, may I please go to the lav?” What is the bane of every senior’s existence? What is the most infamous of all high school assignments? The Senior Theme, of course! Although, in the beginning, a certain author's works may seem interesting — or even amusing, it is inevitable that by the time you are through you will curse his name forever. In spite of all this, it is a fact that we will often be judged in life by how well we speak and write, making the lessons learned in English class among our most valuable. Above: 1 want you!” Below: Mr. Clawson reads to the class. English Department Above: You devil you! Below: Could she mean us? Health and Safety Ed. The faculty members in this department put up with more excuses than any other teachers. I hurt my knee yesterday. I can’t run!” is a popular excuse for gym class. Or, Honestly, I had my notebook in my locker. 1 don’t know where it is now. is an excuse I’m sure the Health and Safety Ed. teachers have heard over and over. Mr. Burket is probably so sick of hearing, What stop sign? I didn't see it!” All in all though, we do learn from experience, and I'm sure these experiences will not be forgotten. Above: Shuffle ball chain. Let's go girls. Below: Mr. Balogh won the smiling contest this year. Above: Mr. Matsko looks on earnestly. Below: Can't you see that stop sign? 22 Language Department Parlez-vous francais? Habla Espanol? Any student who has taken a foreign language at Westmont should recognize at least one of these phrases. If the English teachers on the Hill think they have a tough job, maybe they should try trading places with one of the foreign language teachers. How would you like to teach French or Spanish to a student who can’t even speak English yet? Seriously though, I wouldn't want either job. Communicating with students in any language is never an easy task. Our foreign language instructors do try though. They know what they’re talking about, even if it does sound foreign to most of us. Left: Mrs. Porter helps a Spanish student. Below Right: Hola! Senors y senioritas. Below: O.K., Mr. Wardrop, what's up your sleeve? 23 Do you know what he’s talking about?” I wonder how many students have asked that question while listening to one of Westmont's math teachers. Believe it or not, in spite of the homework, the surprize quizzes and the impossible formulas, most students do survive. While working on proofs, equations and ratios, most students are ready to give up. But in the end, most get by. And many are even surprised at how much they really did learn. 24 Mathematics Department Left: 1 can t believe he didn’t get one right! Bottom left: Are you sure that's right, Mr. Moore? Center: No, no, no. the cos of « 90° is not % . Bottom Center: Oh, class, what am I going to do with you?! Right: The homework for tonight is ... N 25 Science Department It starts with Biology and ends with Physics, if you make it that far. What could be more exciting than dissecting a frog and finding out it's pregnant? Or worse than a double physics lab, that is mostly lecture? But amidst all the biological functions and chemical formulas, we learn of our world and ourselves. At least we’re beginning to know ourselves. Now don't spill this ... unless you don't really care for your right hand!! Hey, Mr. Swedler, do you think Cosmopolitan would accept you! Mrs. Pudliner reads a magazine. OK kids the test will be Monday. Sorry, but that’s how it goes. Social Studies Department Above: Mr. Claycomb, you’re on candid camera! Right: What a chummy pair!! Below: Mr. P. — will you please help me with my taxes? Below right: News Quiz tomorrow. Magazines will be available for signout after 7th. period. Have you heard? The entire senior class of Westmont has been sent to the Ebensburg jail. The charges? — enrolling in democracy class. From India to America, from drawing maps to filling out taxes, the social studies department strives to prepare students for the world that awaits them. But who really cares how the people in Tokyo live? Maybe someday we will ... Pupil Services is one of the school departments that is least recognized, but it is always needed by the student body. For instance, who among us has not required the services of the “Florence Nightingale of the school Mrs. Wagner? In addition, how many of us have not received a blue slip from Mrs. Wenklar? These services, along with the library, guidance and secretarial staffs help to make the life of a Westmont student easier. 28 Pupil Services Left: Mr. Karolchik was camera shy the day this picture was taken. When band camp began in August, Mr. Jacobs, the band director, wasn’t sure just how good the band would be. As camp continued, it was obvious that the band was climbing towards its goal: to be on TOP. When the band marched onto the field to perform everything came alive. The band and front caught the attention of the audience by their definite attitude and colorful performance. After the performances the audience cheered, and this brought satisfaction to the members, making the long hours of work worthwhile. The pre-game lineup. By their guidance we discover the im- portance of education, and we learn the value of hard work. Because of the importance of the faculty in our lives, the members of Key Club take this opportunity to recognize the dedication of one of our most re- spected teachers. Because of his endless amount of patience, he is able to relate well with the students. He listens to our opinions with an open mind and an understanding heart. It is quite evi- dent to all his students that his con- cern is not limited to our perform- ance on his tests. His interest goes far beyond this, to our achieve- ments in life. He has enriched the lives of many Westmont students by help- ing them to achieve a high level of fluency in both French and Ger- man. He is very dedicated to our lives outside of the classroom. By advis- ing the Archery and Chess clubs, he clearly exemplifies this dedication. He also spends many extra hours keeping the score for our wrestling team and selling tickets for our prom. Therefore, because of his dedica- tion to the academic and social life of Westmont students, the members of Key Club honor as Teacher of the Year: Mr. Robert Wardrop 53 Student Council Row 1: Mr. McLoota. But the only responses he receives are a few ahs, and snores from someone that was sleeping in the rear of the room. After five minutes of constant trying, he reaches a few of the students and a majority of them begin to listen just seconds before the bell for first period rings. At this time Mr. Wardrop slightly bewildered, wonders if any one was listening. Everyone starts returning their schedules to him which he had just explained were to be returned tomorrow. Our class, being of so many different types, makes it easy for Mr. Wardrop to relate with the students. Ted Camut Row 1: D. Boylan, L. Bastaja. Row 2: D. Ceh. S. Brownlee, M. Chabon. Row 3: W. We are the usual homeroom, never buying anything or contributing to school spirit in any way. I must admit we are the dullest of the Sophomore homerooms. Except for an occasional groan when A.M. Westy” comes on, one could almost hear a pin drop. Mr. Sherlock has no trouble keeping us under control, but he still is working on improving our assembly procedure. The majority of the class runs into the room at exactly eight and a half minutes after eight. The attendance is taken and Bill Kavar throws a few remarks at Laurel Koontz, who in turn has a few replies of her own. Tom Krizner turns around in his seat and sings to Lauren Lantos, while she desperately tries to study. Michele Kopers takes her daily walk to Sue Merritts’ desk, only to find Tom Lynch and Jeff Lloyd are already talking to her. While all this is going on, “Spunk” Mardis and Joe Kittka add to the noise by yelling across the room to each other. This cycle goes on from day to day. Beth Koop Seated: Mr. Good. Row 1: B. Kolesar. Several people have entered, only to deposit their books on their desks and return to the jungle outside. A few studious (or extremely bored) kids may walk in before the bell rings, most wanting to get in a few good minutes of cramming. At 8:09.59, when the majority of Homeroom 108 is still positioned as close as possible to the door without being legally in the room, Miss Kolar signals, In your seats”, and begins to take roll. Thus begins the rush hour. Twenty clawing bodies attempt to pass through the doorway simultaneously in order to get to their seats before being marked absent. Those walking in after 8:10 must add their autograph to Miss Kolar’s collection. At 8:13, A.M. Westy begins, but we usually must be reminded that we should be listening, not talking. Mary Workosky rapidly fires questions to the most recent upcoming test to (or rather at) anyone within a ten foot radius of her seat. At 8:09 some very interesting characters can be observed. Jay Whelan, David Woodnorth, and Larry Wesner briskly enter glancing nervously around to make sure they made it to the correct room. Some garbled words are exchanged between Woody and Joe Warren. At 8:10 Mr. Mostoller enters with a greeting of, “Larry, you have a pass for me?” Mr. Mostoller explains to Larry the system of absentee readmission. When that is finished the three pounds of library slips are distributed, each with its own, “I wish you people would remember your books.” remark from Mr. Mostoller. A typical day begins 3 or 4 seconds before the 8:10 bell, when the majority of the students push through the door and shuffle to their assigned seats. If you look around the room, you will see the same routine of Jason, Mick, and Jeff sitting on the radiator. And the “Old Ones huddled in the middle of the room. As it nears 8:10, most of us run in, wondering if we'll have to sign. Those times when the bell was early really caused some hassles. There are always the numerous signouts on the board. Everyone seems to be busy; whether talking or sleeping, we really don’t know. As the joyous sounds of AM Westy attempt to brighten our day, we move around to our “chosen seats . This was disappointing to both the players and coaches because in pre-season many thought that Westmont was the team to beat. The team and coaches worked hard throughout the season. The players came away with many valuable experiences from playing high school football. Even though the season was frustrating, the players showed great skill and effort. They should be proud to have played football for Westmont. There were many underclassmen on this year's team. They are the future hopes of bringing a championship team back to Westmont. There Westmont came in third place and Senior Carol Motter was named a member of the All-Tourney Team. The season began on a bad note versus Indiana which went to overtime. They were not to lose again until eight games later. But over-confidence took the young squad with the team losing three of the last four games. Janice Blue and assistant coach Denise Roberts have hopes for next year as they have a large group of underclass returning and they will have a field they can truly call home. Scores West. Will we smile slightly as we think back to the Senior Class Play, “The Great Big Doorstep, and the musical, “Godspell? And will we laugh as we recall the trip to Washington, D.C.? Will we remember that this was the year that McDonalds opened and became another “hang out” of ours? Will we still be boasting of America's Junior Miss, Susan Ann Horvath, and the fact that she was a classmate of ours? Will we be able to envision the slide show, and be able to remember how we felt at the time? What will our expression be when we recall the strange coincidence between the movie, “China Syndrome” and the frightening nuclear accident at Three Mile Island in Harrisburg? Are we going to be astonished when we remember the Gas Shortage and the cost of gas rising from 63c to 90c within the same month? Will we remember that this was the year of the “peace talks” with Carter, Sadat, and Begin? And will the Arabs and Israelis still be on friendly terms? Will we remember that Rhodesia's government finally went under Black Majority Rule and was renamed Zimbabwe? Will we be able to still feel that awful, cold winter and that wet, rainy spring? Will we be able to look upon our past actions with a critical eye, and will we still approve of the partying we did? But most of all, will we remember our own precious moments as well as the bad times that came along for the ride? And ten years from now, will we understand that the past is a part of growing up as we step into the world around us?!
