He exhibits this interest in his teaching, in his direction of clubs and civic organizations. His interest has inspired students at Westmont for many years, not only in the field of typingfnotehand, but in developing good relations with other people. So it is with great pride that this yeafs staff dedicates the 1972 Phoenician to: MR. FREDERIC McLO0TA THIS WAS THE YEAR August 30, 1971 started the new year in a clutter of confusion, Schedules had to be changed, classes had to be found, and friend ships had to be renewed . . . 6 X Sophomores searched for a friendly face among the upperclassmen, Juniors returned with renewed vigor, or perhaps, renewed apathy, And Seniors be- gan counting the days until the end . . . 8 9 So began a year of surprises, of heartbreaks, and of joys. There were of course some dark moments, But it is the lighter ones we want to remember and do so long after they have passed . . . 10 11 Monotony was broken wheng A strange ,folk singer came and sang, When cars without permits were moved-out, And when snow sculptures and printing surrounded the school . . . 12 And along with the other activities, another facet of school life begang Sports . . . The team ran up to 15 miles a day, including wind sprints, hill climbs, and general long-distance running. This year's team had a burning desire to win and to give Cross Country a name of distinction at Westmont. The harriers from Mount Scarlet showed many of the schools in the area that Westy could produce a high-'class team. Although they didn't achieve a victory, the team showed well against some fine class-A schools, including only a 5-point loss to the State Catholic High Champ, Bishop McCort. The team expresses its thanks for the fine support of the few people who did show up and is looking forward to the same kind of support next year, with, hopefully, a larger crowd. 15 Mr. Fox Mr. M atsko Mr. Lantz Mr. Stramzmak F 0 0 i ll 9h Row 1: T. Some of their duties include keeping the equipment organized, repairing the equipment, and administering to the aches and pains of the players. 16 K l Bo for the on-sides N okes around the end Penn Cambria Richland Cambria Heights Forest Hills Conernaugh Twp. A victory in the final game of the year was indicative of the dedication and desire of this year's squad The seniors, playing in their finale on the Westmont football team combined their efforts in order to defeat a strong Bedford team. With only 37 young men turning out for the entire football squad, that left only 15 to fill the positions on the I. V. squad. But the record is not what really counts. What is important is the experience that the team members gain. Boys who gained experience this year will be in strong contention fo-r Varsity positions in the 1972 season. The nzusic program has benefitted greatly from his knowledge, exper- ience, and dedication. The entire student body, as well as the marching band, flag tzvirlers, nzajorettes and color guard, have profited from their association with hinz. The Phoenician staff takes this opportunity to extend their heartfelt thanks to: A. ERNEST PAPINCHAK 22 The efficient services provided by one staff member have gone virtually unnoticed by most students. Only when a projector fails to operate properly, or a- film breaks is the role of Educational Media Director obvious. Before and after school, he quietly provides teachers with the various audio-visual equipment they require. In addition he has served as an instructor in, the Science department. Now after twenty-two years he is leaving Westmont to accept a new and challenging position in educational media. The Section 1 Champs Ke Club Under the direction of President Don Overdorff, the Westmont Key Club has had an exceptional year. Activities of this past year included ushering at many school activities, collecting for the Heart Fund, aiding the Group for Recycling in Pennsylvania, and moving books from the old Cambria Public Library to the new library. The fund-raising event was the annual cider sale. Contributions to W esty this year were the addition of several atheletic plaques and five waste cans. Key Club entered the winning float in this year's Home- coming festivities. Other officers were John Matthews, Vice Presidentg Shawn Shea, Secretaryg and Sam Coppersmith, Treasurer. Pep Club Officers: Ann Crain, Kathy T arsovich, Rita W einzierl, Jackie Sahlaney. 31 Basketball The experience gained in the 1970-71 season paid off in the 71-72 season for Westy's Hilltop- pers. Returning lettermen, Rick Raab, Kim Ku-nkle, and Rory Dougherty, aided by Cliff Allen, Frank Gitto, and Matty Magistro, rolled up a fantastic 19-7 record after working through districts into interdistrict playoffs where they met a heartbreak- ing defeat from Iroquois at Edinboro State College. Rick Raab led the Hiilltoppers in scoring this sea- son, but the team as a whole was very well- roundedg each man performing well in shooting, rebounding and ball-handling. Surely the 1971-72 season was one of the most exciting in the history of Westmont basketball. Matty makes the tieing points in the Conemaugh Valley Game. It is jar more than pep rallies and spirit. A cheerleading squad represents the image of a school. This yearls varsity squad, consisting of seven seniors and three juniors participated in the cheerleading contest at the War Memorial and captured 4th place. The squad was well supported throughout the year. ln addition the cheerleaders did a lot to help psych the teams. They made signs and announcements, and during the holidays the players received such things as Christmas stockings and Valentines. Also, the .lunio-r Var- sity cheerleaders should be recognized. Made up of two juniors and eight sophomores, they practiced hard throughout the year to cheer for .l.V. football, basketball and the varsity and .l.V. wrestling teams. Each man tries to better his time and realizes the importance of training programs and a maximum effort. But it is also a team effort. A combination of good men in field and an effective, balanced group of runners is not always enough for a track team. There must be depth in all events and a good team of reserves. This year Westmont had the good men, balanced runners, and depth. And although the record does not show it, this year was a fine year for Westmont's develop- ing track team. Seniorsg Tim Brader, Don Nokes, Bo Reininger, Rory Dougherty, Forrie Spangler, Keith W assum, Don Fairbanks, and lim Kuntz helped lead the team to respectable showings in all their meets. But the Junior relay team made up of John Herdman, Todd Toth, .lim Herdman, and Don Cowie, along with Dave Webster in the discuss throw qualified for the state meet. With all of the experience gained this year and the returning lettermen, next year promises to be a winning season for W esty's trackmen. ' Row 1: I. Boylan, D. Morder, I. Isban, G. F eltenberger, D.
