DEDICATIO Loyalty to a school is generated by athletic as well as scholastic achievements. Scholastic achievements are, in the most part, individual but athletic victories depend on the ability of individuals to function as a team. lt is the coach's task to insure teamwork. With pride in his coaching ability and gratitude for the victories as a result of his coaching that has given Westmont the reputation of a tough contender in football and baseball, the 1969 Phoenician dedicates its book to MR. Askey You win some, you lose a few, and the rest you tie, seemed to be the theme of the Westmont Hilltop football team. Under the direction of head coach Paul Matsko, and backfield coach Emil Bolha, Westy came through with a 4-2-3 record, far below their hopes. H Plagued with pre-season and season injuries to Nunzio Tanase, one of the returning lettermen, Matsko relied mainly on Ev Custer, Tribune-Democrat 1968 Player Scholarship Award winner and his strong de- fensive team to balance what developed as the lowest scoring team since the 1961 season. With Doug Hand at the controls and Joe Skidel carrying the ball over, Westmont usually came through the game with at least one or more touchdowns. Mid-way through the season, Tanase returned to his halfback position, delighted with the perform- ance Gregg Conway had given as his replacement. Then two games later Skidel was taken out with a slioulder injury, and junior halfback Boyd Henry replaced him. Henry found new life in his job as he scored the first touchdown against Somerset, who had defeated Westmont 35-7 last year. With this new life, Westmont gained a measure of revenge with a 19-13 victory this season. The team tried hard the entire year, and they were recognized for their strenuous efforts. The sea- son's outcome may be attributed to a lot of things, but it was the spirit of the team that made it all possible. Although taking top honors only twice, the cross country team placed second in six meets against stiff competition. Westy's thinclads cap- tured sixth place out of twelve teams in the Fern- dale Invitational. To highlight Coach Claycomb's season, Sophomore Jerry Albaugh copped third place in the District 6-B meet held at Logan Valley Junior High School and was very impressive in state competition at State College. Next year, Coach Claycomh will lose the ma- jority of his squad. With eleven Seniors departing, he will have to rely on veterans .lerry Albaugh, Earl Werner, Dan Fregly and Rick Wright to carry the brunt of the load. Using this as his nucleus, Coach Claycomb will have to rebuild his entire team. Cross country is a deceptively difficult sport. To the casual observer, the deliberate pace of the cross country runner' looks easy to maintain. In reality, maintaining that pace over a rough, two and one-eighth mile course is a grueling test of endurance. For this reason, cross-country occupies a place of great importance in the Westmont Hill- top athletic schedule. It is useful as a pre-season conditioner for wrestling and basketball. It is in- dispensable as a competitive test of strength for athletes too light or too small for football. High jumping from Tom Tiffany, John Rostosky, and Jim Robine also con- tributed to Westmont's quest for victory. Fine dribbling and quick reactions were exemplified by Mike Harrigan, Doug Hand, and defen- sive ball stealer Geoff Henry which rounded the Westmont Hilltop Basketball team. Westmont began the season with a nine game winning streak until they were upended by Indiana, 56-65. Westmont rebounded by winning the next game but lost the next to Richland, 51-65, then defeated Ferndale 80-64. Somerset retaliated for a twenty-six point drubbing and won 54--66. Westmont finished the season winning five out of the last seven games losing both those to Johnstown. Westmont ended the season with a 15-6 record losing only to their toughest of competitors. Westy then went on to play the Class B, District 6 play-offs. Challenging Penn Cambria in their first game Westy broke ahead on their shooting to win 68-60. Westy went on to play Conemaugh Valley and came from an eleven point half-time deficit to win '78-71. Westmont's final quest for the championship carrie against Richland, who upended Westmont 62-59. With less than three minutes remaining in the game and trailing by ten points, Richland rebounded and ended Westmontis hopes by a margin of three points. With a three way tie for the Tri-County League Title, and Richland drawing a bye for the match, Westmont took on Indiana in the first game. Westmont controlled the game almost completely from begin- ning to end. Coach Emil Bolha's men fought for a 90-57 victory. Westy and Richland met in the final game of the Tri-County. Westmont fought hard and played tough but Richland came out on top, winning the game by a score of 57-68. Basketball, as any other sporthtakes a lot of determination and devotion by the coaches and the individual player. Westmont's basket- ball team exemplified both of these factors, and in the years to come they will continue to play in the fine sportsman like manner that they have in the past. 36 Gary Pagano one-hands it for two points against Richland. The cheerleading season is the longest of all ath- letic seasons. Long hours of work are put into the development of cheers and polishing them into their best form. This year's Varsity cheerleaders enthusiastically bolstered the spirit of Westmont fans through nine dazzling football games, twenty-one regular season basketball games, and three thrilling District 6, Class B basketball games. Before each game, the girls fired- up student spirit. During the games, the squad cheered tirelessly. Also deserving recognition is the Junior Varsity cheerleading squad. Composed of sophomores and juniors, the squad performed their duties of cheering the ,luniori Varsity football and basketball teams to victory. They also led the wrestlers to a successful Varsity season. Although they had thrilling seasons to cheer about, Westy's cheerleaders were dealt a heartbreaking blow when their hopes for a berth in the Annual Cheer- leading Contest were laid low by an untimely hang-up in the mail. But this disheartening incident was borne courageously by the girls in red and gray.
