1 v 1 K 1 F ORE ORD Fundamentally, all formal education exists as two distinct levels of experi- ence. To facilitate understanding, the first phase of leaming exposes the student to basic theoretical concepts of life in an organized society. Then, as a natural expansion beyond mere ideas, the second stage offers practical participation in activities that simulate actual problems and conditions of adult life. Therefore, solely by knowing and by doing can the student develop any definite objec- tives and values for which he can striveg solely by knowing and by doing can he not only make a good living but also enjoy a good life. Realizing that society requires active involvement in every aspect of its affairs, the Westmont Hilltop Board of Education has sought to provide a school whose atmosphere and curricula approximate, on a small scale, life after gradu- ation. Toward this goal, it has created the opportunity for the growth of various clubs, organizations, and activities that are adapted to the needs of the present and the demands of the future. To fulfill the purposes of a yearbook - to provide a timeless remem- brance of school life and to present a lucid picture-record of all that composes one school year - the staff of the 1966 Phoenician offers to the students of Westmont Hilltop Senior High School their book in the sincere hope that they will someday proudly declare, Here is how and where I learned. His devotion must be limitlessg his personal involvement, deep and extensive: his leadership, inspir- ing. In fact, since the enduring value of any formal education depends pri- marily on the quality of instruction, a teacher's contribution is not only impor- tant but is paramount to the ultimate achievements of the student. Therefore, recognition is here extended to one Who has helped create for Westmont Hilltop Senior High School the prestige that it now possesses in the community of schools. With pride and gratitude, the staff of the 1966 Phoenician dedicates its book to a teacher, coach, advisor-Mr. William Askey. ot only a good living but a good life - 'N .4 :- wx. xQjEA fr:-:af .... v','---- 1 1 V r J 1.- ,ffl o s ,,,..-v--1 U4 'f H enum v TABLE Qualifications .... ...... Ini- tially, the Board of Education must formulate broad plans, general goals, and basic policies-guides toward the realization of the educational ideal. In addition to these supervisory functions, the Board must also provide the nec- essary buildings and other facilities and select the administrative and teaching staffs. Continuing the program begun by the Board, the administration presides over the daily business operations of a complex enterprise, executes the for- mal policies that the Board has determined, and, when unexpected or unfa- miliar problems develop, adapts the general rules to each individual situation. Likewise, as a practical liaison between the Board and the faculty, the admin- istration interprets attitudes and communicates the decisions. In this way, a pleasant, efficient atmosphere, devoid of conflicts among faculty, students, or both, dominates the actual school situation. Therefore, the prime duty of the administration is to coordinate effectively all aspects of the educational pro- cess. The final stage in this process involves the purpose for which the entire structure exists-the education of the whole student. Here, at last, the abstract principles and the extensive preparation personally affect the student, through the vital services performed by the faculty. However, to fulfill its responsibility of providing instruction, advice, counsel, leadership, and inspiration, the fac- ulty must possess certain knowledge and skills that are prerequisites for em- ployment by Westmont. As a testament to these abilities of the faculty of Westmont Hilltop, a catalogue of qualifications appears below. Mr, William F, Shaffer ,,.,, ................. Un- fortunately, these additional people, despite qualifications, responsibilities, and performance, seldom achieve recog- nition because their work seems separated from the direct educational process. However, their unnoticed contribu- tions sustain the entire institution. Mrs. Alwine and Mrs. Bates, administrative secretaries. supervise records and bookkeeping, maintain correspond- ence, and fulfill the tedious demands of office work. Also, Mr. Goodwin, the school dietician, directs a cafeteria staff which prepares and serves lunches for ever-complaining individuals. Similarly, Mr. Moors and the custodians must clean the building, groom the grounds--inspire a pleasant atmosphere. Now, during their year of adjustment, they must balance and coordinate the many aspects of their school life-extra-curricular, social, academic. With the quiet and leisurely life of a freshman becoming a fond memory, the sophomores discover that the reality of long, hard study dominates their new experience. Subjects intended to prepare them for life must be dealt with seriously. Late hours of typing themes and completing assignments are soon a habit rather than a possibility. Even required read- ing expands to astounding proportions. However, despite such a heavy burden of classroom-oriented work, the sophomores still supplement it with distinc- tive elective programs and enjoyable social activities. Confronted by strange, difficult problems that demand wisdom and mature judgment, the sopho- mores slowly develop familiarity with the responsibil- ities of high school life. They respond with resiliency to the challenge and prove their worth and leadership ability, as they follow the path of their predecessors. ii 1 I -l 4-5. - v A ..-L., MR. In spite of the necessity for increased effort on their part. they display a mature willingness to expand their spheres of interest beyond those things which me merely required by school policy. Behind every experience now is the students' awareness of the permanent importance of their education. Harder, more specialized courses: more compli- cated, thorough assignments: eligibility for d.river's training and the National Honor Society: first fright- ening exposure to College Board Examinations or to future job considerations-these many responsibilities peculiar to a critically decisive junior year demand the utmost of concentration and judgement, if the promise of graduation is to be realized. In order to achieve a measure of success in all of their activities-both those of only present value and those of great future value-the juniors strive to reveal and to develop their latent abilitiesg they possess a definite tendency toward hard work and mature un- derstanding. ttf , ' QT. t W g IUNIOR STUDENTS are educated in traffic laws in their Safety Mr, HUNTER explains the right solutions to Dale Swaney and Education class. However, the rude and revolt- ing truth is that nothing essential has improved-things have become even worse! Rather than diminishing in either number or in- tensity, problems and responsibilities have multiplied beyond reasonable proportions and into the kingdom of obsurdity. Of course, these difficulties are a mere annoyance to the mighty intellects ot Westmont, who simply solve their problems out of existence. Such astute resourceiulness! Also, since they have become members oi a select clique dedicated to intense activity, late hours, and FUN, the seniors wearily re-evaluate their standard oi values. This objective study of personal and social life leads ideally to stability and strength. Congratu- lations to Westy philosophers! Therefore, as commencement steadily looms larger on the school scene, the class of 1966 anxiously awaits Diploma Day, when they abandon high school life for more of the same either in college or in the outside world. .. f Z: .L if 1 ...i , i fps.--.-V-fb CHARLIE TUMMINO IS AMAZED that Suzy Hatch does the problem correctly. ,-12. ?'L ' ' iii :a:5 1 SENIOR STUDENTS-Ruth Ann Peterson, Sue Shatter, and Sue Smith-researching their senior themes. ltd! By this method of offering specialized study on a basis ot voluntary enrollment, the universal need to pursue individual interests can be suitably satisfied. Essentially, the strength and success ot the com- bined electives-activities program depends wholly upon the quantity and the quality of support that issues from the student body. However, because only those students who are sincerely interested in deeper, directed study bother to enroll, dynamic leadership and vigorous personal involvement have become al- most commonplaceg and the program perpetuates itself through a process that is comparable to on-the-job training ot new members. Consequently, not only does the program satisfy the students' immediate demands for stimulating studyg but also, as these students begin to implement the training and knowledge that they have gained, the program indirectly enriches the entire community. 2 XX H AR' ' be f' - I -tgp.-msc , .Al god t sf, f - BILL CORNELIUS AND GARY TURNBULI.. scrutinize several pictures taken for the Phoenician. The time that a Westmont student spends outside of school gives him added benefits and pleasures that in-school activities cannot. It gives him a chance to work and gain experience in various fields, to do what he wants to do. However, perhaps the most important advantage of his outside activities is that they enable him to learn to live with his. fellowman. Life is peopleg we must all learn to live with others and ourselves. Today's student is tomor- row's leaderg to lead well, he must know how to get along with the other person. Fortunately, most sophomores regard the ad- justments to the new building, the new courses, and the new rules as necessary and even enjoyable encounters. Then, with a wide variety of courses to choose from, the sophomore quickly realizes the importance of the guidance department in helping him make his academic decisions. However, when a sophomore is not ad- justing or working or deciding, he is more than likely just having fun. An enormous variety oi activities and sports, as well as school dances and plays, provides him with ample opportun- ity to enjoy his school life. At the end of the year, a sophomore can look back on a year oi excitement and fun and look forward to an even more adventurous year ahead. W Westy's junior is in between -definitely above the lowly sophomore but slightly below the mighty senior. Thus while the confusion of the sophomore year is over, the adventure of the senior year has not yet begun. Seemingly ceaseless studying and testing occupy a large part of this junior year. However, the junior year is a memorable one. Driving proves cz formidable challenge for many: the Iunior Play, a marvelous successg and of course the prom, a night to remember. The appreciation of Westy's team members, students, and faculty compensated for the dis- comfort of long, hot practices and the nights when the girls led cheers in the rain and cold. When anyone thinks of cheerleading, his thoughts natural- ly turn to the cheerleading contest, held annually at the War Memorial. Our squad, led by Co-captains Gerrie Tiffany and Kathy Owen. worked many hard hours to perfect PROCLAIM VICTORY, this year's contest cheer. With this excellent cheer and the support of the Pep Clubs, Westmont captured fourth place. Also deserving recognition is the Iunior Varsity cheerlead- ing squad. Composed of sophomores and juniors, the squad performed well their duties of cheering the Iunior Varsity football and basketball teams to victory. They also led our wrestlers to a successful Varsity season at home and at away matches as well as at the District Six, Section Four wrestling competition. lt is plain to see that these girls are our future Varsity cheerleaders. The hours of practice and the effort expended are exhausting. From the time that the first practice session is called in late Au- gust until the final whistle is blown ending the last game of the season in late October, football de- mands the utmost effort from the players and the coaches. All who have participated in the game have contributed to the school. All who have par- ticipated have learnecl a greater sense of responsi- bility and value. When the season is over, an evaluation is made-wins and losses. Last year only the loss of the first game at Cresson marred the record. Eight wins followed. This year, after six more consecutive wins, only Windber and Somerset were able to defeat Westmont. A two-year record of fifteen wins and only three losses is a tribute to the coaching staff and the team. Experience and hard work are rewarded. What are these rewards? That feeling of pride as you break the run-through, the cheers from the spectators, and the knowledge that the whole school is behind you. Iohn Krouse Fred Wheeler Mr. Bolha MI. Westmont Hilltop Junior Varsity Football Squad com- pleted another great season with four victories, one tie, and one defeat. The defeat was at the hands of Somerset. This season saw clean, hard football played by sopho- more and junior boys with prospects for a varsity position next year. Like the Varsity squad, the I.V.'s suffered through heat and cold, nervousness, pre-game jitters, and the customary bruises and sprains that are always a part of games and practices. Although the competition was tough, the I.V.'s used fine coaching and teamwork to pull them through. The cross country runner must maintain a continu- ing effort for a distance of more than two miles-no time outs, no substitutions. He is on his own. This is the fifth year that Coach Mollura has directed the teams that have represented Westmont in cross country meets. This year's record book shows no wins, but written within the pages is the story of a team that put forth its best effort and did produce individual winners. The tone of the entire basketball season could be characterized by two simple terms- settling in and building. As might be expected, this transitional period, led by returning letterman Doug Svitchan, Elmer Laslo, Tom Bright, Iim Falcone, and Bill Iones, did not produce an especially outstanding record-six wins and fourteen losses: but the great effort and responsibility involved in these processes of development easily com- pensated for a disappointing record. Under the whip of the new but resourceful Coach Bolha, the team sought to achieve a workable relation- ship of trust and communication between the squad and its leader. However, success was not immediate since much of the season had passed before things began to click for the hard-working varsity. Also, because of his lack of experience with the team, Coach Bolha emphasized growth for the future rather than impossible hopes for immediate triumph. Therefore, the Iunior Varsity squad saw more action and labored under greater pressure than is usual: but in true Westmont style, the squad reacted with hustle and determination. Although the record seemed unworthy of a Westy team, the apparently poor season misrepresented the effort and spirit of the players who bravely returned game after game to fight again. Regardless of the results, the basketball teams deserved the admiration and gratitude of the school for their reliability and guts. In addition to a memorable record, the wrestlers contnbuted many tense moments and close matches to Westmont's sports history. Also, they displayed remarkable spirit and aggressiveness despite a long, tough schedule. In an exciting season that coincided directly with the Varsity team's surge to prominence, the Iunior Var- sity Wrestling squad masterfully defeated nine oppo- nents while they were only surpassed by two. One reason for this successful performance was the excellent records earned by the following members of the squad: Gary Holsopple, six wins and one lossy Andy Kohlhepp, nine wins and two losses: and Tom Pastovic, with six wins, no losses, and three ties. To gain skill and experience, to enjoy the thrill of competition, and to build good sportsmanship, the I. V. team is necessary for the successors to the present team. Perhaps this need for pre-training indicates the advantage of the Iunior High wrestling program that Westmont sorely lacks. The team worked toward perfecting their form and building their strength, balance, and co-ordination. The MOMEN were not prominent in field events this year. Therefore, Coach Mollura relied heavily on two of his distance runners, Pat Docherty and Ieff Deardorff, who placed first and third respectively in the 880-yard run in the P. I. A. A. State meet. Perhaps the most outstanding event of this season was the two-mile relay. It is interesting and fun to watch, bringing just as many tense moments as other sports. There is the thrill of a hole-in-one and waiting for the big putt. Westmont's golf team performed excel- lently in representing our school this season. With only one returning golfer, Brian Castelli, the team formed into a winning combination. Compiling an outstanding record of nine wins, one loss, and one tie, the team had only one major setback. It was the Dr. George Wheel- ing Scholastic Invitational Tournament. They placed second and relinquished a six-year reign as champion of the tournament Although losing three semor golfers Brian Castelli Lee Beerman and Phil Holtzman other outstanding team members such, as Ski Smyth, Tom Bremer, and Iim Mitchell, wil return to uphold Westmont's reputation of championship golf Westmont Win Loss Win Tie Win Win in Win Win Win GOLF SCORES Opponent Ferndale Kiski Bishop McCort Bishop Carroll Conemaugh Central Cambria Windber Bedford Richland Blairsville BRIAN CASTELLI tees ofl.
