MR. ELDAD VANDERLIP lnstructor in Literature DER ANC-ELI GES AND LITER TLIRE The language and literature department, headed by Mr. Vanderlip, opens the picture window of life to Westmont students. Language is the basis of all communication and is at the foundation of studies of the sciences and humani- ties. Literature fulfills a double role, it helps us to under- stand ourselves better and it brings us into closer com- munion with our fellowmen. Dr. Daugman's emphasis in teaching French and German has been the understanding of speech as well as the ability to read in these languages. ' Mr. Kingma and Mrs. Bowman have helped students com- municate more effectively in their own language, English. There have been speeches and writing of papers. Lower division courses in world literature and newswriting have helped to broaden the offering of the department this year. Literature students will long remember, Shall we sing a rousing chorus? and party-time in the lounge. Significant additions of some five hundred volumes have been added to the library holdings in the field of literature. The consolidation and enlargement of departmental offices have improved opportunities for consultation of the students and mark a definite advance. . MR. WILLIAM KINGMA, M.A. Assistant Professor of English MRS. BLANCHE BOWMAN, M.A. Assistant Professor of English DR. JOSEPH DAUGMAN, Ph.D. f . y Associate Professor of Languages
