+HQ Ommmo. TWLMLLMO fm Jkowflwmwa FURWARD The Panorama statt has had a lot of fun as well as hard work in pre- paring this yearbook for you, We sincerely believe it to be new and different and hope that you will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed work- ing on it. Through the use of play titles for headings and drawings on our title pages, we have tried to show you that there is no business like show business, And now, on with the show! Judy Chamberlain Editor Edith Hovey Assistant Editor Pete Neumann Business Manager r C Dedication The staff is dedicating this year's Panorama to a teacher who has won the- love and respect of his students, Mr. Lowell Holloway. At the end of the i955-56 school year, Mr. Holloway will have com- pleted twenty years of teaching here at Westlake. During this time, he has used his abilities towards directing many highly successful Senior Plays, and preparing students for the Rotary Speech Contest. His English students appreciate his sincere interest in their literary efforts, and most stude-nts who have had one yeor of Latin with Mr. Hollo- way are eager to go back for a second. Thank you, Mr. Holloway, for being an inspiration to us all and for your unending devotion to your work. llpprec Persons who have been with an iri- stitution for a number of years, often have their hard work go unnoticed. All of us owe many, many thanks to Mr, Burneson for his 32 years of loyalty and devotion to our school. Because he works, so to speak, behind the scenes, many are unaware of his hand in school affairs, Let's make it a habit to stop once in a while and think about some of the individuals, such as Mr. Burne- son, who do their fine work incon- spicuously. iations 2,4,6,8-Who do we appreciate? At this point there are a great num- ber who would like to, literally, stand and cheer for Mrs. Knowles. She has spent much time working and plan- ning with this year's Juniors for their dances and has helped many stu- dents to further their literary efforts, Thank you, Mrs. Knowles, for your patient understanding. Everyone looked so familiar, but why wouldn't they, for this play was honoring the senior class of 56 who had presented it so well a decade before. The first ones seen by all were Ed Almquist and Richard Broa who had constructed the theatre and attended every performance. Taking tickets were Muriel Atkins and Gloria Schneider. Behind them, counting money was Manager Barry Olderman. Soon Judy Cunningham arrived in a new sports car driven by an able mechanic, Dale Elgin. Judy was the President's secretary, and said she bought her new car from Ken Romick. There were several conventions which we attended. One was the Bakic Engineering Company, headed by Bob Bakic. With him were Ron Wagar, Bob Lane, Jim Baur, Bill Shollenberger and Art Gudde, Another was the National Association of Able Secretaries. These included Jean Maier, Doris Krebs, Beverly Baker, Gretchen Alberts, Joan Barth, Janice Prok, Martha Simpson and Jean Kashi. Seated in the front row was Don Jenkins, the producer, He was sur- rounded by his private secretary, Joan Rush, his writers, Carol Keeling and Lynn Hale, and a stenographer, Marlene Piper. Near them were five famous clothes designers, Larry Schwartz, Wilma Jent, Nancy Bohr, Jean- nette Grande, and Lisa Brachos. Found backstage were Karen Thompson and Mike Clancy, voice teach- ers, going over some last minute diction with the cast. Standing near them were Betty Henning and Debbie Nemeth, beauticians. The orchestra began to warm up. lts outstanding director was Allen Teschner. Leading clarinetists were Lou Ann Williams and Adair Miller. Helping the people to find their places were four pretty usherettes, Sallie Whitely, Diane Newell, Pat Smith, and Kay Slack. The audience grew silent as the lights dimmed, but suddenly they flickered and brightened again. Ron Schneid, Joe Williams, Bob Zothner and Jim Janz, the lighting technicians worked quickly to fix them. The orchestra began to play and the curtain opened. Pat Popvich, the leading lady, and Frank Sciangula, her leading man, started the show on its way. Before long they were joined by Colleen Griffin, Jerry Battenhouse, Dick Puzzitello, Jce Balsamo, Betsy Power, Dick Demaline and Joanne Bourne who worked hard to make the show a hit. The scenery was beautiful and many commented on the wonderful job Gail Foster and her able scenery men, Bob Kalapis and Dan Reehorst had done. When the final curtain had fallen, Don Jenkins, producer, Pete Nau- mann, director, and Bob Heiser, who was in charge of photography, received great recognition. Roald Anderson, Ed Souhrada, Roger Schneideriet, and Tom Trakas, a group of servicemen, had received their passes too late to attend the per- formance. Almost all the class of 56 has been accounted for except for five who were doing their duty for the world. These were nurses Barbara Eskins, Marilyn Bailey, Margie Clouse, Carol Belosky and Judy Bender. Once again, My Three Angels has been recorded as a great hit. We should be very proud of all seventy members of the class of l956, for they have proved themselves a successful and wonderful group during the past ten years. Everyone admitted that Latin and algebra weren't the easiest subjects to master although they do provide a good background for future study. Not to be overlooked, however, are the periodical activities which they were permitted to participate in: W.A.C., cheerleading try-outs for the girls, and sports for the boys. Everyone enjoyed the class party that was held in the fall. Naturally the co-operation of a large enthusiastic crowd is depended upon by both the cheerleaders and the players. A letter grade of C or better grade average is necessary in order to en- ter in the cheerleading tryouts. The student vote shows who are the finalists. From these the faculty will select a winner. Instead of having a Head Majorette as in the previous years, each girl was given a chance to be Head Majorette, The girls were each given one football game, and in the re-maining games they all marched together. The Majorettes are all members of the National Baton Twirling Asso- ciation. ln the spring they are entering a twirling contest. We can all look back at the fine pre-gamer and halftime performances the girls presented this past year, If next year's Majorettes perform half as well as this year's, they will be te-rrific. We will all miss Senior Majorette, Gail Foster. Congratulations, girls, to a job well done! A point system was installed this year. Each member is working to earn enough points for their achievement pin. Attendance at club affairs and meetings is also important in maintaining club membership, ln the late fall a record dance was sponsored by the club. ln January the members went on a field trip to the Art Museum, and in February they had a dinner, with a commercial artist speaking to them. Whenever there were any posters or art work to be done, the different clubs and the school could rely on the- Art Club for doing the work very well. The club's goal is to advance further in its knowledge of art and to contribute its ability as best als possible to the school. The work done by the Student Council is of primary importance in or- ganizing and co-ordinating the activities at Westlake High School. The Community Chest drive, which the Student Council sponsored, was a big success, for they more than doubled the funds that were given the previous year. The Council purchased coronation robes which are to be used for the Homecoming in the years to come. Another terrific job done by the Student Council was the planning of interesting and enjoyable assemblies. President .... Bill Shollenberger Vice-President , . . Judy Cunningham Secretary . . .... Early this school year try- outs were held and new members were chosen according to their ability. Initiation of the new members took place soon after they were chosen. The club staged two short comedies entitled The Cunning Lunatic and A Date With the Professor. The intermission between plays contained a magic act which was also sponsored by the club. With the helpful advice of Mrs. Koontz, we are sure it will be a suc- cess. Her work is greatly appreciated by all. President . , , . Joan Stotzer Student Council Kathy McReynolds sixty-one Senior Pla Night of January 16th The class of 1955 presented Night of January l6th as their Senior Play. The setting of the play was a New York City Courtroom where Karen Andre, played by Lee Lestock, was trying to win her freedom after being accused of murdering her former employer. Bill Kirby played her Defense Attorney. Trying to prove her guilt was District Attorney Flint, played by Dick Wright. He acted on behalf of the state and Nancy Lee Faulkner, the widow of the murder victim, played by Joanne Hlavin. The play was unusual in that a jury was chosen at random from the audience at each of the two performances. On April 29 Karen Andre was found innocent and on the 30th, she was found guilty. Although a very tense play, there was quite a bit of humor brought in by the manner of the witnesses. Although everyone did not agree on the verdict, all agreed that it was a wonderful play and Mr. Holloway did a grand job of directing. sixty-two Ffiglldship The Spinsters Convention sixty-three Front Row-D. Early in this year, they adopted o constitution and were officially recognized as a club. The main object of this organization is to bring out creative talents in its mem- bers and then to aid them by constructively criticizing their writing. The Penpushers put out several publications during the year. The booklets contained some of the best efforts of the students and were pub- lished under the name of The Quill. This club has attracted much interest throughout the school, and we hope that it continues to be as big a hit next year. OFFICERS Editor ..,.. . . .,.,, , . .... Kay Karner Assistant Editor . . . . .
