TEKOA ' 69 VOLUME FORTY-FOUR THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM To dream the impossible dream, To fight the unbeatable foe, To bear with unbearable sorrow, To run where the brave dare not go. To right the unrightable wrong, To love pure and chaste from afar, To try when your arms are too weary, To reach the unreachable star. This is my quest, To follow that star. No matter how hopeless; no matter how far; To fight for the right without question or pause To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause. And I know, if I ' ll only be true — To this glorious quest. That my heart will lie peaceful and calm. When I ' m laid to my rest, And the world will be better for this; That one man, scorned and covered with scars. Still strove with his last ounce of courage, To reach the unreachable star. 1% 2 £= T v To dream the impossible dream To fight the unbeatable foe To bear with unbearable sorrow To run where the brave dare not go 1he Students of „ lir . n mis COLLEGE m L BE HEARD andTHEV 5HALL — BE HE A To right the unright- able wrong To try when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star This is my quest - To follow that star No matter how hopeless ■ No matter how far To love pure and chaste from afar To fight for the right - without question or pause To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause And I know, if I ' ll only be true to this glorious quest; That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I ' m laid to my rest And the world will be better for this That one man scorned and covered with scars Still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable star $ £ 1 w I ' feu m-£ ■■-- ; WESTFIELD STATE COLLEGE 1 ■ i i ®t ' V.-iifr! Green came to Westfield State College one year prior to most of us. During that year and the four following, he helped to initiate many of the activities and implement many of the facilities which have made our stay at Westfield State both academically profitable and socially enjoyable. In the classroom, on the athletic field, and in administrative posts. Dean Green has proven himself a teacher, a guide, and a friend to the class of 1969. Intramurals, soccer, and golf have benefited from his patient attention and active involvement. As a physical education instructor, in health education, and in guidance, Dean Green has offered to share his knowledge, wisdom, and advice in hopes that each student will go on to become a thinking teacher and, even more importantly, a feeling person. In 1965 he was appointed Dean of Men; in 1966 Director of Student Services. Through student employment opportunities, scholarships, loans and grants. Dean Green has, for many of us, made four years at Westfield State a financially realized goal. From personal counseling, to the food we have eaten, to the dormitories and houses in which we have lived, he has nourished us both physically and emotionally. So to you, Robert P. Green, we dedicate this Tekoa. 11 fctty ra0££ °o£ z aa kare Se tfor 3 ea T ' e jes £t estcri ry £ e fttO Z PtwloffafW rcca ax ioi £faey Lay- Out c ufo asfaesg tstd £$ £, Art cu qottealfe,? j«t j. %f Aaafa r sJferJef Srz a ' PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE For the past four years the members of the Class of 1969 have lived and worked on our campus with but one object in mind: to prepare themselves for a career in the world. To that end the faculty and administrators of Westfield State College bent their every effort. Now we have completed our work and yours is about to begin. How well we have succeeded will be judged by how well you succeed. You join a distinguished group of alumni -- men and women who for close to 130 years have been making their mark in the fields of education, commerce, and industry. We are certain that you, too, will add luster to the name of Westfield State College. We trust that you will return to our campus often as interested, active alumni. Leonard J. Savignano, President 15 We ' ve dreamed our impossible dream — and seen that it wasn ' t really impossible. We ' ve fought our unbeatable foe — and seen that they weren ' t unbeatable. Don Quixote would have been proud and so are we, just a little. But if the world will be better for this, it won ' t be because of the achievement and it won ' t be because of the conquest. Perhaps it will be because of the achieving to reach that achievement and the quest to reach that conquest. For we wake only to find that the dream is not over, and the battle not won, not yet. The night ' s done, the dawn ' s come, and we wake to dream another dream, more beautiful, more sensitive, and more impossible. FACULTY I Ml  . ,  « ,  .  J ' .. , « if Wis is ' . Some generations, concerned with the building of a nation, ask How? Other generations, needing to set priorities for the future, ask What? Your generation has asked Why? As Americans we must together ask all of the big questions and seek to find answers. How we build a better America, what kind of nation we want, why we pursue certain goals instead of others -- these are not problems to be faced by one generation and ignored by another. All of us must face them. A college education in the humanities and sciences teaches us that the real power to deal with these problems comes out of the human mind and human heart. All power must be disciplined by trained intelligence and tempered by compassion. Each of you is a center of power. Your professional or social or religious or political activity will determine the shape of the future of your nation and of the world. The question asked by your generation -- Why? -- is one that must be answered not by the quality of your rhetoric but by the quality of your lives. It was in your college years that we were first made aware of those people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening. What you have brought and will continue to bring to American life is not the sound of silence, but the sound of a generation which will work to ensure that, in the words of William Faulkner, ... man will not merely endure: he will prevail. After a years absence because of a knee injury, John ' s fine play at halfback helped to coordinate the Owl ' s offense and defense. Senior co-captain Ed Matulewicz was selected for the NESCAC All-Star Team. Toolie scored a three-goal hat trick in State ' s opening win against Nichols College. 168 To the right, senior defenseman Hank Crisostomo ' s extremely aggressive play helped State to score seven shutouts during the 1968 season. Below, senior Mickey Kennedy ' s fine defensive play in the second annual College Jamboree resulted in an overall shutout for the three matches. Playing defense, Mickey chipped in with two goals in a fine season. fe V ; f 9 M ■ M,X Fortunate to have the services of Coach John Kurty, the soccer team compiled its most successful season ever in the history of Westfield State College. A highlight of the 1968 season was Max Salvador ' s record- breaking five goal performance against Quinnipiac. 169 la + •  ••- !«w WESTFIELD STATE COLLEGE 1969 i estfield opened its season on November 30, against American International lollege at Butova Gym on the A.I.C. campus. Although Westfield led at half time y a score of 40-37, the Owls went down to defeat 97-75. The fine play and hustle isplayed by the Owls in the first half showed promise of things to come in i estfield ' s highly successful 1969 season. i estfields lead in the first half was due to the great shooting by Ray Glynn and Bill ienedict. Bob Hill emerged as Westfield ' s leading scorer with 18 points, while Ray ilynn totaled in with 16 points. 171 Alex Popp finished his varsity career by scoring 380 points and a .514 field goal percentage. This was a young Westfield team with the only graduating member being senior first baseman and captain Ken Silva. With the experience gained by the many first-year players and with the returning veterans, the Owls should be even stronger in 1 970. Pitching was a strong point for the Westfield team in 1969. Tom Parent led State ' s strong pitching staff which compiled an excellent 2.39 ERA. Tom finished the year with a 4-2 record and a 1.63 ERA. Strong efforts were also turned in by hurlers Jim Devine, Jim Wall, John Brown, and Glenn Larrivee. The Owls had one of their finer seasons by compiling a .265 batting average. Team Captain Jim McCarthy credits both Coach Reach and former Coach, Dean Green, for a large amount of the Owls ' outstanding play and improvement for the past two seasons. One of the reasons for the team ' s successful season was the fine play of the team ' s top five players. Team Captain Jim McCarthy ' s consistency with his iron and putter made him the team ' s number one man. Last season Jim finished fourth in individual competition at the New England tourney. Bob McDonough and Ray Glynn were the other senior members of Westfield ' s well-balanced squad. Bob is known for his excellent game and for the way he attacks the golf course. A long hitter off of the tee, basketball ace Ray Glynn added depth to the squad. Constantly improving, Ray was a tough man to beat. Pete Jonaitis, a long hitter with the iron and a clutch player under pressure, Gary Gagne, a tremendously long hitter off of the tee, and promising newcomer, Gary Barney, round out Westfield ' s 1969 Golf Team. 186 turn man mar wa mm roan. t ne ' ra 187 i IL Jr £? This year ' s team was a young one, with only one senior, Ed Matulewicz, in the lineup. Eddie held the number one spot throughout the year and, therefore, drew the toughest assignment in each match. Gerald Quesnel, a sophomore, held the number two spot. Eddie and Gerry represented a team that was mighty tough to defeat. Bill Engright, Mark Lynds, Charlie Tetrault, and Bob Guistina held the numbers three to six spots respective- ly. All capably rounded out this year ' s team. Under the leadership of Coach Norman Hiersche, the team finished in second place for the second straight year. With a talented team returning next year, the Owls could very well improve on their second place finish and gain a conference championship. 189 w R A A The aim of the Women ' s Recreation and Athletic Association is to develop physical efficiency and to help establish a permanent interest in physical recreation. Westfield ' s W.R.A.A. has a varsity and intramural program. It is an experiment for the students at this college to achieve in their own manner, a degree of self-government and responsibility. The main purpose of this organization is to act as a co-ordinating body between students and faculty and administration. This year ' s Student Government attempted to gain total involvement on the part of the students. The main issues in this year ' s Government were concerned with the eight proposals and the communication gap that exists on campus. There were rallies and even a nonviolent march, a meeting with the trustees, the Annual Awards Banquet and the finale - Student Government Ball. PRESIDENT DANIEL F. Although we can ' t really believe either one yet, we ' re both a little happy and a little sad too— that a part of our impossible dream didn ' t turn out to be the nightmare we ' d expected. And for the surprisingly pleasant morning— after awakening, we owe so much to so many people. People who helped us to follow that dream; no matter how far away it seemed or how hopeless. Thank you is a small word and thanks is even smaller, but both are very big in gratitude, appreciation, and even sentimentality. So we say thank you to you Amico J. Barone, to you Dave Keys and to Hausamann Studio, to you Roger Sullivan and Woodland Publishing Company. We also say thanks to those students who didn ' t worship pure and chaste from afar, but instead got involved and got things done— Karen, Rich and Rich, Dick and Jeri, Holly, Shirley, George, Bob, Linda, and Carole. Thanks to the typists, thanks to the proofreaders; and to all those who helped to make TEKOA 1969 what it has become, — and thanks to YOU - the Class of 1969.
