TEKOA 1965 To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose the heavens: 1 7 25 Anniversary I Faculty ln the Owl ' s Eye I Seniors! Supercal . . .1 lAthleticsl {Underclassmen I | Organizations DEDICATION We stand now ready to face the world in the light of our own achievements. They are not mere token accomplishments, but one great success built upon the necessary unity of confidence, cooperation, and character; for success can come only through unity. Each time a challenge was put before us, it was met and the success of ' 65 was ultimately achieved. This would not, however, have been possible had we not been aided and encouraged by the experienced, guiding hand of our class advisor. Her support and advice have helped us down the cumbersome road to maturity, highlighted by four years of progressive growth. In the final analysis, the Class of 1965 has emerged as a rightful tribute to its distinguished leader. After four years of continuous struggle, we can now rest and pay our due homage and sincere gratitude to this deserving individual. In the words of the eminent Charles Dickens, we are better able to express that which our own words cannot seem to say. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. We, the Class of 1965, gather together in final acclaim for perhaps the first time in our long career. This book is not only a reflection of our four years, but a trib- ute to Miss Jennie B. Lesniak, advisor to the Class of 1965. We sincerely hope that this, our last and perhaps biggest under- taking, will be your remembrance, Miss Lesniak, of a job well done. r (r History reveals that graduates of Westfield State College have for one hundred and twenty five years assumed important roles in directing public education in our Commonwealth and Nation. Their contributions have reflected considerable credit upon them and our college. The time is now at hand for you to join this long line of graduates. Certainly the opportunities are plentiful, the time demanding, and the need great. We who have assisted you during your four years at West- field State will watch with interest your contribution to the educa- tional scene fully confident that you will uphold the Westfield tradi- tion of outstanding performance and professional integrity. Leonard J. Savignano President Dr. Theresa J. Lammers IN APPRECIATION FOR HER MANY YEARS OF LOYAL DEVOTION, FOR HER KINDNESS AND CONSCIENTIOUSNESS, FOR HER CEASELESS PATIENCE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE 125th ANNIVERSARY. To you, Dr. Lammers, we, the 125th graduating class, bid a fond farewell and an expression of sincere thanks for your many endless hours of devoted service to us, the students of Westfield State. RESOLVES OF MASSACHUSETTS CHAPT. LXX Resolves relative to qualifying Teachers for Common Schools April 19, 1838 Whereas by a letter from the Honorable Horace Mann, Secretary of the Board of Education, addressed, on the twelfth of March current, to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, it appears, that pri- vate munificence has placed at his disposal the sum of ten thousand dollars to promote the cause of popular education in Massachusetts, on condition that the Commonwealth will contribute, from unappropriated funds, the same amount in aid of the same cause ; the two sums to be drawn upon equally, from time to time, as needed, and to be distributed under the direction of the Board of Education in qualifying teachers for the common schools; therefore, Resolved, That his Excellency the Governor is hereby authorized, by and with the advice and consent of the Council, to draw his warrant upon the Treasurer of the Commonwealth, in favor of the Board of Education, for the sum of ten thous- and dollars, in such installments and at such times as said Board may request; provided, that said Board, in their re- quest, shall certify, that the Secretary of said Board has placed at their disposal an amount equal to that for which such ap- plication may be made by them; both sums to be expended, under the direction of said Board, in qualifying teachers for the common schools in Massachusetts. Resolved, That the Board of Education shall render an an- nual account of the manner in which said moneys have been by them expended. This is where it all began Samuel P. Newman Principal 1839-1841 The Town Hall at Bane where the first co- educational State Normal School in the United States met from September 1839, to the illness and subsequent death of its principal. Exerpts from the Barre Gazette Boston, March 27, 1839 Normal School at Barre The Board of Education hereby gives notice that a Normal School, for the qualification of Male and Female Teachers of Common Schools, is to be established at Barre in the County of Wor- cester. Applicants for admission to said school must have attained the age of 17 years complete, if Males, and of 16 years complete if Females. They must be in the enjoyment of good health and must declare it to be their intention to be- come school teachers . . . July 5, 1839 The Normal School We have been shown a letter from a member of the Board of Education . . . Which states that the opening of the school on the first Wednesday of September will be attended by public and interesting cere- monies. His Excellency, Governor Everett has received and accepted of an invitation to deliver an address on the occasion, in addition to other and appropriate exercises. . . Sept. 6 (a Friday), 1839 Normal School The Institution established at this place has been opened with suitable ceremonies. On Wednes- day about 20 pupils were examined for ad- mission and there are other applications. Yes- terday an address was delivered by Governor Everett at the old church in connection with other appropriate exercises . . . Sept. 13, 1839 Normal Sch ool In explanation of the total absence of parade and show ac- companying the exercises at the opening of this school last week, it is proper for us to say that such was the express wish of the Board of Visitors under whose directions the affair was managed. They are desirous of avoiding the semblance of superfluous ceremony and de- clining proffer of even a parade of music by which to marshall a procession to the church. It was perhaps well that such an institution as this — so experimental in its nature, and so de- pendent for success upon the favorable regard of public — should commence with as little pomp as was compatible with the assembling of people to hear its nature and object explained. This could not have been entrusted to better hands than those of Gov. Everett . . . SITS Ol? BARRE STATE NORAIAL SCHOOL SEPT. 4 1539 — NOV. L54i RJrBSTABLLSHBD AX WBSTFIBLD SB! 5 ! . 4 UU4. Newman. 1844 September 4, the Barre Normal School was re-opened in Westfield Academy with twenty-three males and twenty-six females in attendance. It was soon after moved to the first floor of the Town Hall. 1846 September 3, a new brick Normal School building was dedicated. It was located on Washington St. on the site of the present Training School, and accommodated children on the first floor, Normal School students on the second. 1847 September 1, the Westfield Normal Association of alumni was formed including those who at- tended at Barre. 1848 September 6, the first anniversary of the Westfield Normal Association was observed with Horace Mann as speaker. Thereafter the Association met triennially for many years. 1855 The first diplomas were awarded at fulfillment of a unified program of studies. 1855 Children could no longer be accommodated in the Normal School building and students began to get their practice by teaching one another. 1860 The Normal School building was enlarged by the addition of two wings and a cupola. 186 7 The Green District School, across the street from the Normal School, was designated as the School of Observation and provided opportunity for practice teaching. 1869 The Normal School was enlarged by the addition of a third story. The total enrollment was 167. 1874 A much needed new residence hall on the corner of Washington and King Sts. was opened for use with room for 175 residents. Men occupied the top floor. This building is now the Washington Hotel. 1892 The Court St. building, offering every modern facility, was dedicated. Children were again housed within the Normal School building. 1896 A high school diploma was first required for entrance. This created a crisis in enrollment because many small towns did not have high schools. 1899 Only one man resident remained in the dormitory, dubbed AAAA by the girls, all alone among angles . 1900 The Normal Training School on Washington St. was opened for use. The original Normal School buiding was razed to make room for this building which housed children beginning with grade four. 1914 was the last year in which any men were enrolled. The number had dwindled to only one or two in a class for several years. 1925 Student Government was initiated. 1925 February, supervised study hall was discontinued. The first of several annual Conferences for Young Teachers was held in which first year teachers returned to the campus and seniors acted as their substitutes. September, a three year course was substituted for the two year course at Lowell and Westfield. June, the last two year class graduated. The Janes property, adjacent to the Court St. building, was acquired adding space for tennis courts and a president ' s house. June, there was no graduating class due to the shift to the three year course. April 1, Governor Ely signed the bill changing the Normal Schools to State Teachers Colleges, offering only a four year course. May 26, the first May Day pageant was held. June, the first B.S.E. degrees were granted. September, the state discontinued the food service in Dickinson Hall because of the small number of residents. September, eleven men were enrolled in the freshman class after a lapse of 24 years. The agitation to close some of the State Teachers Colleges was begun. February 8, the first series of cultural programs open to the public was sponsored by Student Gov- ernment, offering Mary Ellen Chase, author; Ted Shawn and his male dancers; and Lucille Brown- ing, mezzo-soprano from the Metropolitan Opera Association. May 26 and 27, the Centennial was celebrated with a convocation, a concert by the WPA orchestra, a historical pageant, and Alumni Day. September, a delegation of faculty, alumni, and city officials went to Barre where a Centennial pro- gram was held and a plaque was placed on the Town Hall commemorating the founding of the Normal School there. A co-operative food service was begun in Dickinson Hall, about thirty students participating and do- ing virtually all work except the actual cooking. May, the legislature voted that no State Teachers Colleges would be closed, thus ending a two year period of strain and uncertainty for Westfield. October 29, Dickinson Hall was taken over by the Signal Corps, U.S. Army, as a radio training center. Residents, less than thirty in number, moved into the president ' s house. September, the Signal Corps left Dickinson Hall and the residents returned. October 13, ground was broken for the new Western Avenue campus. The move to the Western Avenue campus was made during the summer and the college opened in the new quarters in September. December 14, the new campus was dedicated. January 13, an Open House was held for the public. January 13, Parenzo Hall was officially named. February 2, a twentieth anniversary observance of President Scanlon ' s inauguration was held. May 22, Paul Andrew Dever Auditorium was officially named. The name of the school became the State College at Westfield. October 26, President Savignano was inaugurated with delegates from 32 collegiate institutions in attendance. 1962 September, the first students were admitted for a program leading to the A.B. degree with a minor in education. 1964 October 1, William Gelston Bates Hall was officially dedicated and named. 1964-65 was designated as a year of observances of the 125th Anniversary of the opening of the school. 31 THE HENRY TODD LECTURES Henry Todd died in New York City on March 2, 1849, leaving the residue of his estate to the Massachu- setts Board of Education, the income of which is to be applied forever in aid of the Normal Schools . From 1926 until the war years this income was used to provide an outstanding lecturer annually to give the Henry Todd Lecture to all the State Normal Schools. When the Henry Todd Lecture was given in Westfield the city schools were closed to permit the teachers to attend along with the students and faculty of the Normal School and invited guests. When someone so young, so full of life departs, we feel a deep loss. Such is the case when his name is mentioned. He was Kevin — a friend, a smile, a quick proud Irish sense of humor, a ball game, a rewarding glimpse of life, a tragedy. He loved life and lived it for twenty years. A superb athlete, he gave his all as a gentleman and a sportsman. All will remember him. It is for these reasons we dedicate this section of Tekoa 1965, to Kevin.
