WESTFIELD STATE COLLEGE 3 0386 0025 9486 6 h E £ MmA TATE COLLEGI • 5VE8TFIELD, MASS. the tek 1964 rain calls for boots rubbers overcoats and hats of course rain calls for umbrellas to keep the drops out some people build gutters and pipes to avoid getting wet ram refreshes renews life and makes parched lips reach out for more if one takes off his hat removes his boots destroys gutters and pipes and gets wet rain is wasted on some who persist in buttoning their coats properly on the other hand rain is submissive to some who walk barefooted in a puddle and let the mud work into their soles ram stops always the slickered forms catch cold anyway but in some places where rain has touched a bared shoulder or t L bootless foot we observe growth Dedication For our first two years, the spirit of ' 64 lay dormant. It could not express itself completely, for it lacked certainty. It could not realize its potential, for it lacked direction. It existed enthusiastically, but not at the height of its capacity. For the past two years, the spirit of ' 64 has been labeled the instigator, aggravator and creator on campus. This sudden personality change is attributed to an increase in confidence. Success is built on confidence. Two individuals have revealed our identity. They have encouraged us to experience the impossible. Two individ- uals possessed the rare ability to forego dictation in favor of confidence. The spirit of ' 64 cannot be silenced. It speaks to the campus. It reflects the advisors ' intent. It has unleashed its latent talent. It is a fusion of initiative, perseverance and confidence. Words are inadequate in expressing appreciation. We pay the greatest tribute to our advisors by our own actions. But regardless of the amount of success we experience, we are humbled by the quotation ■A leader is best when people barely knows that he exists; not so good when people acclaim him; worst when they despise him. But of a good leader, when his work is done, and his aim is fulfilled, they will all say, ' We did this our- selves. ' — Lao-Tse westfield life ■22il ¥ M w. I pi ? ?-£ The campus seeks emotion. The new- comer contributes his awkwardness. For both, it is a gradual awakening. ? 5 ;B|I|| k II 12 An interruption; the still life is broken by the arrival of the upperclassmen. For the senior, it is his final invasion. For the campus, it is a revival of activity. 13 14 Lecture, lesson and exercise become signifi- cant in the learning process. Instructional tech- niques are varied and reaction folloivs according- ly; regardless of the method, the professor adds character to the curriculum. 15 16 Personalities mingle in an illusion of attention; the early riser finds 8:30 ' s challenging while the nightowl sleeps. Three P.M. classes provide atmosphere for dreamers and doodlers, and as the clock ticks away the final hour, motivation be- comes irrelevant. 17 Spirit is fleeting; it is colored by the changing seasons. Autumn is short- lived and hibernation is inevitable. Spring fever arrives late. 20 A society in miniature develops within authority; mores are experienced in the form of sign in and out sheets. Community life attains its fullest impact in the twilight zone. I : M The intellect takes pride in the betterment of self. In his attempt to vanquish competitors, he discovers there are others like him. The paradox: Who really is the Lord of the Flies? 22 a 22 The child ' s world adds a new dimen- sion to the learning process; for the in- experienced it is a jumble of anxiety and intrigue; for the senior it is a venture in role-playing and everyone participates. The teacher is likened to a spring rain, encouraging growth in the unborn blossom. A thirst for knowledge is satisfied and the petals unfold, one by one. 26 M MI 1 Study is tempered by a taste of honey. Diligence diffuses in a social blur and even the scholar indulges. 28 29 The entertained are paramount in the circle of talent; they are the criticizers, creators, supporters and suppressors of the social environment. It folloivs that complete satisfaction can only be reached by those who persue. 31 Abstractions, patterns and configurations escape from the humdrum. V - T 32 33 I Individuality has no bounds. In the halls or on the roof, wherefore Tekoa? 34 35 The camouflage of winter wears off and the growth process is uncov- ered. A campus thaw is evidenced in structure and in spirit; a saucy student perched on the highest limb to sing, announces the arrival of mid-spring. 36 37 38 For the senior, yesterday has vanished. The self- confident become apprehensive and security can only be found in memories. The semester ends in confusion and emotion. And yet, it is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. It is commencement and the threshold of life. ok- 40 i ■leadership 42 ML tBEM ■. H wSm m ' m. ■R President and Mrs. Leonard J. Savignano 44 Dr. Savignano and George Membrino. Presidential Assistant Dr. Leonard J. Savignano, our President, brings to our campus a wealth of professional preparation and ex- perience. A native of Newton, Massachusetts, he is a graduate of Newton High School and continued his edu- cation at Fitchburg State College for his baccalaureate degree. His professional education was continued at Boston University, where he earned his Master of Edu- cation and was selected for the Warren Research Grant to complete his Doctoral Studies. Additional studies were carried on at the Harvard Graduate School and Washington and Lee University. A dedicated teacher, his classroom experience started in a two room rural school in Vermont. From that date he served successively as elementary teacher, as elementary school principal, and as a supervisor of elementary education in the public schools of Newton, Wellesley and Needham. In preparation for his present post, Dr. Savignano ' s collegiate experiences include Visiting Lecturer at Bos- ton University; Visiting Professor, Syracuse University; Supervisor and then Director of Teacher Training at Northeastern University; Supervisor and then Head of the Elementary Department at Framingham State Col- lege. Dr. Savignano is firmly convinced of the need for professionally prepared teachers for our public schools. Basic to a successful teacher is an educated, well adjusted individual with intensive preparation in his particular academic field. Dr. Savignano states, The most im- portant factor in a teaching situation is the teacher. 45 Dr. Edward J. Scanlon President Emeritus You are the last class that enrolled under my administration. It is, therefore, with something akin to a nostalgic feeling that I pen these few lines. You have witnessed many campus, curriculum, and faculty changes for which all associated with the College attach great and unreserved pride. May you go forth from the portals of your Alma Mater with the unflinching desire to make it bigger and better. Hold steadfastly to its honored ideals and traditions. Seek to bring new honors to it through your thoughts and efforts. 46 FREDERICK S. CONLIN Academic Dean ADMINISTRATION EDWARD B. WELCH Dean of Admissions 47 CECILIA C. SEYMOUR Dean of Women CHARLES D. Student Government Student Government spent a successful year asserting its authority on campus. After solving the cafeteria problem, it reinforced control of student capital. Other major ac- complishments included an accelerated park- ing ticket system, a ride board and a well or- ganized student exchange program. The power of Student Government has been revived. W. Lessin. Tekoa This year ' s Tekoa represents the climax in current campus creativity. Many yearbooks attempt to glorify the actual college situation. Tekoa merely reflects its own endeavors. The 1964 Tekoa dares to be different. 62 Westek JAMES SHEA, Editor Westek, our campus journal, has shown noticeable improvement under the literary in- tellect of James Shea. Editorials . . . enlight- ening; accounts . . . accurate; publications . . . periodically. Our only regret — each issue was so informative, we wish there ' d been more. 63 W.A.A. COUNCIL Women ' s Athletic Association The purpose of the Women ' s Athletic Association is to develop physical efficiency and a perma- nent interest in physical educa- tion. Intramural sports include archery, tennis, volleyball, bas- ketball, badminton, and softball. The members of W.A.A. are the supporters of all physical activity on campus. A M 64 Officers are: Barbara French, Sec; Patricia Kosewicz, Treas. ; Carole Simard, V.- Pres. ; Merrie Huxtable, Pres. Men ' s Athletic Association The Men ' s Athletic Associa- tion stands behind every member of eveiy team Westfield sends into every sport. M.A.A. promotes such activities as soccer, basketball, baseball, track, intramural sports, socials, and the Quintet Queen Dance. The members of M.A.A. are the instigators of all physical activity on campus. Ray Arra officiating Officers are: Mark Beauvais, Sec; Ray Arra, Pres.; John Farrell, V.-Pres.; Frederick Osetek, Treas. 65 The Cheerleaders for 1964 are: Barbara Charron; Sabina Rutkowski; Nancy Paille; Ann Jachym; Susan Hall, Captain; Linda Fitzgerald, Nancy Collins; Pamela Sloper; Michaelene Filip. The 1964 Tekoa finds the spirit of the cheerleading squad, uplifting. It is difficult to bolster a team ' s morale during a losing sea- son. But the task becomes a real test when the spirit is lost in a crowd. Under the direction of Susan Hall, the Westfield State cheerleading team has inau- gurated a reform movement for spectators. The crusade has been vigorous, but the spir- Cheerleaders it remains at large. 66 Victory is anticipated indicated aptured. 67 «4 H Ufa i if 1 L . Officers are: Gertrude Almeida, Hospitality; Carole Oschwald, V.-Pres.; Barbara Shea, Publicity; Linda Danahey, Pres. ; Catherine Allen, Sec. Newman Club The Newman Club pro- vides spiritual benefit for Catholics on campus. The ac- tivity for which the club is noted is the Christmas party for the needy children of West- field. Everyone supports this activity. Each child attaches his own meaning to Santa Claus. 68 Student Fellowship Variation was the theme of this year ' s Student Fellow- ship. The program ranged from the civil rights dispute to poetry in religion. Issues were appealing and attendance increased. LOIS SOMERVILLE Devotional Chairman Officers are: Shirley Goodwin, Sec.-Treas.; Joyce Martin, V.-Pres.; Patricia Snell, Social Chair- man; Ardelle Chase, Pres. ; Lois Somerville, Devotional Chairman. 69 Dorm Council Dormitory Council cooperates with the dormitory supervisor and the college administration in regu- lating dorm activities. Although the council advocates a social cli- mate, its primary function is law enforcement. Proctorship is syn- onymous with tranquillity. Kappa Delta Pi The Iota Iota Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, a National Honor Society in Education, was instituted at Westfield in 1960. Members of Kappa Delta Pi have the distinction of be- ing in the upper fifth of the college. The so- ciety encourages high professional, intellectual and personal standards. 70 Glee Club The Westfield State College Glee Club is a combined effort. The Freshman Chorus adds voices. The Concert Choir adds depth. Supplemented by the student direction of Jack Derwicki, the Glee Club sings. Officers are: Dor othy Harper, Jacquelyn Desrochers, Accompanyists; Bette Bain- bridge, Sec; Susan Hanby, Librarian; Rita Furlong, V.-Pres. ; Jack Derwicki, Pres. ; Antonia Valorose, Librarian; Sally Powers, Publicity; Eleanor Mendrala, Librarian; Maureen O ' Malley, Sec; Kathryn Satlawa, Treas. 71 Footlighters Footlighters, the college dramatic club, is one of the most spirited organizations at Westfield. Under the cooperative efforts of Dr. Goldstein and Miss Reed, the Footlighters dabbled in diversity. Their controversial Christmas presentation is indicative of the po- tential in campus creativity. 72 Theater Arts Behind the scenes, is an im- perative phase in staging on the scene performances. Theater Arts as- sists with scenery and equipment for all stage productions. Services are also available for costuming, make-up, set designing, sound and lighting. f -.■ffrsi tm Alpha Psi Omega Alpha Psi Omega is the largest dra- matic honor society in the United States. Eligible members of the Theater Arts Club and the Footlighters are elected on the basis of interest and proven ability in one or more forms of dramatic art. Marjorie Vieira; George Wheeler 73 Photography Club Economics is based on a supply and de- mand curve. The photography club is the prod- uct of a demand and supply for the adminis- tration, the college newspaper, school publicity and the Yearbook. The 1964 Tekoa acknowl- edges the extensive efforts of this year ' s pho- tography staff. Through the unparralleled prints of Jan Lessin and Robert Zemba, the organization approaches a truly professional level. ROBERT ZEMBA, President 74 The purpose of t he Interna- tional Relations Club is to widen student interest in the background, causes and course of international affairs. Guest lecturers from many of the foreign delegations to the United Nations provided impres- sive experiences for the entire stu- dent body. Prof. George Levy; Marion Pratt, V.-Pres. ; Dr. J. Kadyk, Belgian delegate to the United Nations. International Relations Club 75 Language Club The Language Club is one of the newest campus organizations. It is comprised of stu- dents who can speak either French or Spanish fluently. Under the supervision of Dr. Fran- cesco Loiero, the Language Club has great potentiality as the curriculum of the college expands. Math Club The Math Club attempts to equate mathematics with practical application. This quiet club ' s activities include meetings with Westfield Alum- ni, field trips to Weston Ob- servatory, and the M.I.T. Lab- oratory, films and guest speak- ers. The club ' s faculty advisor is Miss Helen Peters. 76 Literary Club . ' 4i ' j UH The Literary Club advocates personal in- terpretation. Personal interpretation requires individual thought. Individual thought is es- sential in unleashing creativity. Creative peo- ple revolutionize stale thoughts. Why don ' t more people join the Literary Club? Art Club The Art Club exposes students to the visual arts through practical ex- periences. The cultural minded are free to participate or enjoy, create or criticize. Under the influence of Mr. Arno Maris, members of the Art Club offer a series of changing exhibitions in the foyer of the college. 77 Officers are: Feme Tandy, Treas. ; Joyce Mister- ka, Sec; Craig Webster, Pres. ; Pamela Sloper, V.-Pres. Ski Club The Ski Club offers seasonal appeal to the athletically inclined. The novice masters the art of falling. The intermediate acquires grace. The experienced becomes the uncer- tified instructor. And they all come tumbling down. 78 Elaine Marieb; David LaPine; Alethea Masters; Pamela Sloper; Vickie Machesney; Marilyn Bieniek; Frederick Moran; Susan Hynek; Elizabeth Papp; Marion Pratt; Joan Ambrosi; Maureen Devereaux; Carol Rinaldi; Susan Landen; Bonnie Bleakley.
